This seems like an interesting case, continue selling the Intel to those willing to buy it (R&D costs have already been covered, ONLY make them BTO and they’re still making a profit on each one sold) and shift to Studio branding for the future systems they intend to support for the long run.

"Only" issue is the logic board would need to be redesigned (updated) to use the next generation of XEON's since they're a different socket. Without that, it's nothing more than a glorified MP6,1 being sold for 7+ years. I'm sure there will be orders fulfilled, however.

Probably because the item that’s not mobile and not an iMac starts at 6 grand.
No, it’s more that today’s laptops are more power than the vast majority of folks need. Add to that the fact that they can pick it up and take it with them on a business trip, to a friend’s house, or on vacation, etc. and it’s a form factor that beats any desktop solution at any price. This isn’t just for Macs, it’s for PC’s, too. Very few want a desktop of any kind.

I've hand-on this machine on this monday.I've post on Mac Pro sub-forum here.

All the info i know is.
- The machine i've test consists of 2 of M1 total 20CPU and 48GPU cores.
- It very very fast, i think it far more snappier than my 14 m1 pro, i think it may be runs on more than 3.2 GHz.
- I've test it on Apple 5K Display. As i have seen only front of display, it closely resemble of what Apple Pro Display XDR look like.
- Mac Pro name may not be drop.
- We will be get more than 1 configures.
- Doesn't know about its price.

Exactly. Apple wouldn’t need to redesign anything. For those that NEED an Intel powered Mac, it doesn’t matter how old it is or how much it costs, if that’s what’s required to work, that’s what they’re getting. And, it’s not like they’d be unaware that they’re buying a dead end device (just like the folks buying the last few Intel laptops or Mac Mini’s).

I'm very intrigued abut what they're developing, but for my needs as a videographer, I'm increasingly considering going only laptop with external monitors in the home office. I shoot and edit 4-6 camera multi-camera shoots in 4K, but the new MBP's don't even break a sweat with this kind of material. VERY interested in their new displays though.

So sounds like Apple Silicon Mac Pro might continue to come in a full-size tower case with internal expansion bays for disks and PCIe cards and this "Mac Studio" could be the "self-contained" model like MacPro6,1 (2013) was for folks who need the CPU/GPU power and RAM capacity of the top-end Apple Silicon SoCs, but do not need internal expansion.

Apple is working on a "Mac Studio" device that seems to be a cross between a Mac Pro and a Mac mini, according to a report from 9to5Mac that cites an unspecified source with knowledge of Apple's plans.

mac-pro-mini-feature.jpg

The device is "in addition" to the rumored Mac mini and Mac Pro, but primarily based on the Mac mini. It will feature "much more powerful hardware" and there are two versions in development. One machine will use the same M1 Max chip introduced in the 2021 MacBook Pro models, while the other will use an Apple silicon chip that's more powerful than the M1 Max.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously described a new version of the Mac Pro that will feature a smaller chassis to be sold alongside the larger-sized Mac Pro, and it sounds like the "Mac Studio" could be this smaller-sized Mac Pro.

Gurman has previously said that the smaller Mac Pro would have up to 40 CPU cores and up to 128 GPU cores.

The Mac Studio is known internally by the codename J375, and 9to5Mac says that while the naming could potentially change, it is aimed at professional users and will be sold alongside a 7K "Apple Studio Display" that Apple also has in the works.

There's no word on when the Mac Studio might see a launch, but prior rumors have suggested that it could be introduced sometime around WWDC before launching in the fall.

I thought using own silicon would bring prices down. The Mac Pro is only extortionately priced because Intel charge an arm.

I think the reality of the current Apple Silicon situation is that the split of 80% laptop to 20% desktop systems is very likely going continue to favor more Apple laptops over time. Non-iMac desktops are going to shoot for features/performance ABOVE the laptops and be likely be priced accordingly.

And that's why it's doomed to fail IMO. This will have a very, very, narrow market, if any. The vast majority of professionals are going to opt for the full size Mac Pro.
That’s why Apple provides options. I need the power of a Mac Pro in a size I can travel with. I design motion graphics for live events with huge LED walls. So my movie files are huge, take a lot of power to edit/render and I need to edit wherever the show is as conditions change. Will buy it already loaded up so other than upgrading the graphics cards, I’m not that concerned about being able to add stuff later. If it and the OS works with an eGPU, I’m not even that concerned about being able to upgrade the gpu cards.

Realistically, though, there’s very little upgrade capability and modularity even available with Apple Silicon. No RAM upgrade, no storage upgrade, no GPU upgrade. What else is there?
I would be interested in seeing a machine that uses a backplane architecture (i.e. PXIe) instead of a main logic/motherboard where the user could upgrade the machine by stacking multiple M1/RAM boards.

The vast majority of Apple’s customers aren’t interested in a desktop of ANY kind, though… 80%+ of Mac buyers are buying mobile systems. And, of those that want desktop systems, the vast majority actually prefer the iMac line. There’s probably a single digit percentage of anything that’s not mobile and not an iMac being sold.
You don’t think enterprise customers that have their own displays wouldn’t utilize this category of Mac, that would be a odd thought. This mentality of iMacs and laptops are adequate for all needs is contrary to business usage. It started back in 2005 with the PowerMac G5 that was renamed Mac Pro. Apple through the following years constrain us to accepting only their limited product lines over what business typically deploy in offices. I do agree that the latest MBP and iMac are quite useful for a lot of purposes, but neither suits the enterprise like a good desktop.

Bet it'll have an input device on top. A touchscreen, not a keyboard like depicted in their design patent. And I bet it will have a battery like a MacBook does. And I bet there will be nice big displays with batteries and A chips.

The MacBook Pro (and Air) cover the needs of the vast majority of users, especially when connected to an external monitor. A new desktop has to be able to do something that a laptop can't to justify it being non-mobile. Multi-processor? Higher core counts than feasible in a laptop? It has to be something along those lines for it to be compelling enough to buy.

There are a few iMacs in that lineup. They are desktop machines. If anything, I’d figure this would slot in around or above the upcoming high end iMacs, especially at that performance level.

Ah fair point!

I always tend to forget about the iMac line.
