Air is just a snazzy word to use. Everyone likes "air".

Air plane
Air Play
Air Power (er, scrap that one)
Air Supply
Air Fleet (Aeroflot)

I think this is due to the new EU charging cable thing. It may have been brewing, but now it's become a priority.

I still like the idea of being able to plug my phone into a cable and charge it, though. Something basic about it, especially when it's kaput.

airhead
Airborne
Airways
Airless

and my personal favorite, airfart

A Mail app that actually delivers mail and a fix for the crummy AirPod Pro firmware would be even nicer.

Come on, people. One person speculates "port-less iPhone" and the entire discussion is hijacked.

Macs have had Internet Recovery since OS X Lion (2011), and guess what? Macs still have ports!

The real benefit is for those without access to a PC. Despite what the "iPad can't replace a Mac" crowd says, there are lots of people who only have mobile devices. And even when they have PCs, they may first have to install iTunes before they can try to restore the iPhone. And there's no iTunes for Chrome OS.

This will be very, very nice once its been implemented. I won't hold my breath, though. It requires testing server-side as well as device-side. I'd make a very small wager that this is the start of a very limited, internal test before it's unlocked for a broader test in the iOS 14 beta. "You don't need iTunes to restore any more" is a good enough marketing bullet-point (well, for some people) that they may want to save it for the iOS 14 Keynote.

You call USB-C a port? Why, when I was a boy we had FireWire. And ADB. And centronics connectors. And we liked it.

As soon as Apple adds internet recovery to a product, suddenly all we have is these wimpy ports that you don’t even have to have perfect vision to figure out which side is up. What kind of nonsense is that, anyway!?!?

A portless phone would suck; wireless charging is only 60% efficient. That means you just lost 40% of the capacity of your powerbank right there.
and on this scale it is a significNt impact on overall power consumption

SCSII - Now that's what I call a port! I had a trio of external SCSII drives daisy-chained to a Quadra 950 - about 6-8 GB total storage. Each enclosure about half the size of a Mac Cube, each cable about a half-inch in diameter with a big, whopping Amphenol/Centronics connector on each end... give one of those cables to a gladiator to swing, and watch out!

13.3.1 on XR, suddenly facing Bluetooth connectivity issues, did the “Forget this device” thing but to no success. Also followed reset the network settings, again to no success. My headphones are fine as I paired & tested with other devices. At times finishing a four minute song can be a real nightmare. Anyone else having this issue?

SCSII! That brings me back to the good old days. I don’t know why the EU didn’t mandate everyone use SCSII — you’ll never accidentally lose one of those wires! No electronic waste!

A portless iPhone would suck, I currently use the lightning to USB to plug my bass guitar into garageband and lets not mention the masses of lightning accessories that are out there. The port is used for more than just charging and recovery mode and its loss would reduce functionality quite a bit.
I agree. This obsession to get rid of cables endangers other applications that some might call 'niche' but should be important to Apple: What about the integration of iOS devices in audio setups? There is no reliable wireless low latency audio solution that I know of, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

Their #1 priority should be fixing Apple Mail, not introducing new features. We should first fix what we has been working correctly before jumping to new shiny features. Apple Mail has serious bugs!

Cannot see a portless iPhone as yet due to not that many cars having wireless CarPlay as yet.

Never mind wireless CarPlay, there are millions of cars out there which don't have CarPlay at all (or an option to upgrade to it) but do have USB support for playing media in dock mode.

Losing the lightning port would screw me over completely and I really don't fancy having to change my car just to be able listen to music off my phone while driving.

I don’t think Apple yet has the technology to go into your home and remove the USB/lightning port from your existing phone, so you should be fine.

Didn't think of this. My car supports Bluetooth Carplay, but I choose to use the cable so I can more easily control when my phone is connected to the system. I typically use it only to stream Apple Music.

I wonder if a port-less device is Apples answer to a GreyKey.

There's an exonerating and an incriminating (backdoor) 'yes' to this....
Recover/Uncover. The port-less initiate protocol will soon be known by those criminals.

Is there really a statistically significant percentage of people who have iPhones but don't have access to a computer for purposes like this?
Yes.

STV, you multiply yourself by 100,000? ;)

This is true at the moment but I tend to upgrade my phone an awful lot more often than my car so there will conceivably come a day where the only new iPhones available to upgrade to are port less and my car isn't.
