Apple is still working on a Ring-like home security camera that will integrate into the Home app, reports Bloomberg. It's unclear when the camera might launch, but it could come alongside or after the smart home hub that's expected in 2026.

The camera will feature a battery that could last for several months to a year, and it in addition to being useful for security, it will be able to detect people and sense motion for Home automation purposes. From Bloomberg:
The device has facial recognition and infrared sensors to determine who is in a room. Apple believes users will place cameras throughout their home to help with automation. That could mean turning lights off when someone leaves a room or automatically playing music liked by a particular family member.
Apple is working on multiple types of cameras and home security products, including a doorbell that uses facial recognition for unlocking a door. Apple is aiming to establish a foothold in the smart home product market, competing with Amazon's Ring brand and Google's Nest brand.

The HomeKit smart home platform already supports cameras developed by third-party manufacturers, with Apple offering secure cloud-based storage through iCloud.

i’m open to apple expanding in the home category—i’m sure they’d do a better job than most (who have mostly failed); but i am desperately asking for a focus on existing software bugs before category expansion. i get they’re completely separate teams that have nothing to do with one another, but a man can still ask.

How people react when Apple tries to make another product (it’s a diabolical crime to them)

Can't say ive ever seen a single person react this way to the idea of Apple making their own smarthome hardware. I have however seen so many people wish that Apple did, that I've lost count.

The reason I went with Google for my smarthome stuff is because they make their own stuff, I didn't want do have to deal with a myriad of manufacturers.

Except google buys and shuts down companies like nest, etc.

He probably meant more like companies complaining Apple is like an interloping sherlocker.

Better than most? Ring works fantastic. Just because it says apple doesn’t make it better

Logi Circle & Arlo were the worst of all the HomeKit cameras, i tried as many brands i could find to buy. I do hope its better. I got rid of all the HomeKit ones and went with Unifi cameras using home bridge so i get them in the home app.

This isn't the first time this site has reported this rumor. And then, poof, nothing for years.

The doorbell I have with secure video goes offline whenever it chooses. Complains about overheating when it's cold. Goes offline when people walk by it. Discovers "packages" that don't exist and interrupts a TV show with a big empty porch displayed. The chime stopped functioning and any form of Home+ work around (because, hey, doing this in the home app is too impossible????) to get the HomePods to play chime sound effects work intermittently. Yes this is 3rd party hardware - but it's Apple "HomeKit". If no one is effing offering a viable product, MAKE ONE. Like do something with your trillions of valuation and 150B in the bank ffs.

The Apple ecosystem is really in some sort of crap that maybe it's finally time for a product mindset to rework the company from top to bottom like Nadella did with Microsoft.

I’m invested in Nest, so I don’t see changing. Two of the latest thermostats, a doorbell and two outdoor cameras. For the most part, they work well.
