Regardless of what they do, I’ll not be letting my Reolink solution go.
No doubt Apple won’t give a local storage option and will not change the iCloud storage options so it’ll be costing a fair chunk per year
Absolutely spot on. I've just this week dumped our Ring multiple camera setup and subscription, and moved to Eufy with no subscription. I detest subscriptions.

Given Apple have realised how they can coerce subscriptions, for example, by throwing iTunes out with the bathwater in a concerted effort to get everyone over to Apple Music, which also then needs the separate Apple Devices app on PC's, it is a cluster****, and IMHO Apple Music is a poor cousin to iTunes. Apple Music is dumbed down and geared towards streamers. Well not this little black duck! 😁

So, back to the camera... I think it's fair and reasonable to assume that Apple, given the experiences and impressions subtly pointed out in my last paragraph, may like to create a great quality security camera, consisting of nothing more than a lens and a wifi transmitter; a network of dumb terminals. This would somewhat continue to quench their thirst to march us down subscription street.

I need to lay down, it's all too much 😁😁😁

Only 10 years too late compared to Xiaomi. Apple will restart their car program in 2030 lmao.
And I don’t trust Apple to innovate anymore. This will either be useless, too expensive, filled with bugs, not getting any updates, delayed, or cancelled

It's a good thing they scrapped the Apple Car.

Even actual car companies are having trouble competing in EVs.

Turning the whole inside into iPads powered by Siri was going to flop harder than a football(soccer) player.

Logi Circle & Arlo were the worst of all the HomeKit cameras, i tried as many brands i could find to buy. I do hope its better. I got rid of all the HomeKit ones and went with Unifi cameras using home bridge so i get them in the home app.
I feel your pain. Most of the camera kit out there is junk. Axis always has been impressive. Been using their kit since 2008 and it’s come a long way. I’m currently trialing an Aqara G5 Hub. Colour night vision is quite impressive.

Actual car companies are failing because they don’t know how to build smart cars.
Sometimes building from the ground up is much faster than changing existing stuff around.
If Xiaomi and Huawei can do it, Apple can and they absolutely should. If I live in China and buys a Xiaomi car, I will definitely buy into Xiaomi’s ecosystem and not iPhone

Think about your first line there ...

...and then think about where Apple is with anything "smart" right now.

Since you mentioned raspberry pi, it sounds like you are not a noob when it comes to this type of stuff. Did you explore options with other systems that allow for a NVR and no subscription services?
I use cameras with onboard recording to flash. A good quality SD will deliver many weeks of storage. More than I need. Stream via Homebridge into the Home app. No need for external or NAS storage. No monthly fees. Works reliably.

So, because Timmy and the executives at Apple are completely out of good ideas, now they want to Sherlock Ring. Give me a break, what a bunch of talentless hacks.
First things first, Ring is barely its own entity anymore, it’s owned by Amazon. We aren’t talking about Apple taking over some tiny company, we’re talking about one mega corporation doing the same thing as another mega corporation.
But also, as someone who has a ring doorbell and an Amazon echo show, they suck.
They constantly miss things at the door, they are littered with advertisements, they are not easy to use, they constantly go off-line, and Alexa just gets worse and worse. I’d argue that it’s even falling behind Siri at this point, half the time it either can’t answer what I ask or it has to throw an advertisement in its answer.
It’s also its own other completely separate subscription, unlike Apple, who will likely continue to bundle this with iCloud or Apple1.
They absolutely should do this.

I agree with those who say please fix the home app with things like load speed of the camera. I have ring and home kit cameras in different areas the ring devices were gifts but the reaction time is way faster on the ring cameras. And load/refresh’s too! Plus i can not say how much I love the ring devices I was given had that port where you can plug a small solar powered panel and I haven’t charged them in 2 years. My aquara bell is good as it runs on batteries but things like my eufy camera can do pan and tilt in the eufy app. I just feel HomeKit gives you this limited app while the goal was to limit using all these extra apps the benefits of some of these apps really don’t stop that. Make the home app snappier and I don’t care who makes the camera apple or anyone else I am not putting cameras like that in my house. The cam on the iMac is the most. Perhaps those people sensors but that’s about it. And back to door bells I will get the notification your bell was rang on my Apple Watch I press the. Notification and it just loads and loads like ummm can I see the delivery guy before they leave!!!! lol

Ring works fantastic
Ring is from Amazon.
That's enough for me and most to say no thanks.

For the main security product of your house, right at your front door, do you really want Amazon in control of that? I surely don't. I trust them even less than the last bits that I have for Apple at this point. But, still definitely would never trust Amazon's ecosystem.

It is a great plug n play and forget type device. But it definitely has a lot of issues and likely security/privacy issues as well.

When Apple people say “focus on bugs first” I always scratch my head because I rarely come across any bugs in Apple software, and if I do they’re incredibly minor. Can you be more specific?
for YEARS when playing music from my phone to homepod and i select a new song, it will not play. i have to turn off airplay, start the song on my phone, then move the song back to my homepod. i’ve reported this multiple times. there are others, of course, but this one just recently pissed me off again.

eta: siri as a whole. (especially on homepod, my god.)
