From Bloomberg:
Apple believes users will place cameras throughout their home to help with automation.
NO. No I do not ever want cameras INSIDE my home constantly recording! This can be achieved with the new generation of motion sensors that can detect what room a person is in on a given floor seeing motion through walls.

Apple is working on multiple types of cameras and home security products, including a doorbell that uses facial recognition for unlocking a door.
Would love a doorbell or other outside cameras. I have Ring and I’m tired of their crap and their broken promise for HomeKit support before I bought heavily into their ecosystem. And now they’re raising subscription pricing and I’m over fiddling with Homebridge and needing to run a raspberry pi server to get things somewhat integrated until it breaks or needs upgrading and I have to fiddle with it more. I just want it to work!

Curious what they'll introduce that is "new" - or how they'll make the category better. Would be a miss if they just release another camera that's the same as everyone elses.. Suspect they'll do something different - has to be compelling to get people to switch.

Only 10 years too late compared to Xiaomi. Apple will restart their car program in 2030 lmao.
And I don’t trust Apple to innovate anymore. This will either be useless, too expensive, filled with bugs, not getting any updates, delayed, or cancelled

Better than most? Ring works fantastic. Just because it says apple doesn’t make it better
My biggest problem with Ring is that they lock out a lot of the functionality behind the subscription. Some premium ones or extra cloud storage? Fine. But some of the very basic functions of a doorbell camera shouldn’t be for a $200 device.

At least I have faith that Apple won’t do that, although the price difference will probably be 2 years worth of a Ring subscription. Lol

How do people react? Since you're one of the first commentators? I'm curious

Pretty sure he's referring to people who offer kneejerk reactions like this one:

So, because Timmy and the executives at Apple are completely out of good ideas, now they want to Sherlock Ring. Give me a break, what a bunch of talentless hacks.

Also, I'm not sure if it really qualifies as "Sherlocking" when the creative minds who started the small company have already sold out for a king's ransom to one of the untouchable Big Kahunas.

Since you mentioned raspberry pi, it sounds like you are not a noob when it comes to this type of stuff. Did you explore options with other systems that allow for a NVR and no subscription services?

i’m open to apple expanding in the home category—i’m sure they’d do a better job than most (who have mostly failed); but i am desperately asking for a focus on existing software bugs before category expansion. i get they’re completely separate teams that have nothing to do with one another, but a man can still ask.
When Apple people say “focus on bugs first” I always scratch my head because I rarely come across any bugs in Apple software, and if I do they’re incredibly minor. Can you be more specific?

I’m generally an early adopter but I’ve been holding on everything (but ikea door and motion sensors that act like a primitive security system) hoping Apple would enter the camera, bell and lock space.

I already have the hardwired Wemo Doorbell Camera. It's HomeKit only, and setting up was a breeze. I put in a higher power transformer first (16V 20VA as recommended), took out the old doorbell, drilled new holes, connected it, all in about an hour. At first it did disconnect/reconnect at random times, but giving it a reserved static IP and using my Apple TV instead of the HomePod Mini as a hub solved that issue.

Can't say ive ever seen a single person react this way to the idea of Apple making their own smarthome hardware. I have however seen so many people wish that Apple did, that I've lost count.

The reason I went with Google for my smarthome stuff is because they make their own stuff, I didn't want do have to deal with a myriad of manufacturers.
Is Google making their own processor now? Or modem? Or battery? I must have missed this....

Hopefully Apple can make a security system too. So I can leave Ring. Those pesky people on Ring Neighbors with their daily stupid queries.
Easy solution... ignore Ring Neighbors. I live out in the sticks now, (Holdup... is that banjo music again? ...) but when I lived in a densely packed suburb, I did notice that the people who posted in Ring Neighbors were never actually my neighbors... always someone a block or twelve away from me that I'd never met.

But yeah... I likewise wouldn't be at all upset to have an option which could finally prompt me to cancel my Ring multi-camera subscription, even acknowledging that they've been the best option in that space for a very long time.

I loved the pre-Google Nest cameras, including their ability to stream directly to the Internet. Now that Google has shut down the Nest API, and newer Google Nest cameras are designed to simply lock you in to Google Home alone, this would be a potentially nice alternative. I'm using Starling Hub for now, and it's great. But, some of my Nest cameras are coming up on 9 years old, and on the cusp of a potential home sale/relocation next year the timing is also coincidentally nice.

please buy Wyze so i have someone to complain to easier
I have one Wyze camera (V2) in my dog's kennel, and I'd swear to you that it has gotten harder to use with every app update. I bought it because it was cheap, had a decent IR and resolution, and loaded the camera view when I opened the app. Now it feels like every time I open the app, I need to re-authenticate my account, or it prompts me with a recording instead of a live view, or a promotion to buy more Wyze stuff. It's basically an advertisement for why I'll never buy another Wyze camera again every time I access it.

I’m almost always either wearing my Watch or carrying my phone. If Apple creates devices that can track those through UWB, great, but cameras inside the house are a non-starter.
