I totally agree. + I want multitasking to be more like Expose rather than clicking those icons back again and removing redundant applications from the multi-tasking tray. I opened Voice Memos app last week and its still there in the multi-tasking tray. Why?

Because what is displayed in the app switcher is basically your "app history". Every app you've used, in order of their last usage, regardless of whether they are still occupying memory.

The writing is on the wall

Apple is methodically moving away from being dependent on companies that continually screw them behind their backs. :)

Looks pretty gee-whiz. Not sure it's all that necessary though. Maybe I'm old fashioned on this but do I really need a detailed view of the roofs of buildings when I'm walking at street level?

I just want this in my car. Forget the phone.

Oh thats coming my friend. Just look at some of the iPod implementation in iOS and you will find hints that apple is at least considering iOS for the cars. BMW is already implementing the iOS improvements in their cars. Mapping is another piece to the puzzle.

Thanks
AE

I wish Apple would act with more urgency on some of these things. It's time they kick Google to the curb in iOS.

It's one thing to talk tough. It's another thing entirely to back that tough talk up with some tough action. Apple is showing they belong in the latter category.

It's about time Apple stopped lining Google's pockets with cash. They're competitors now. Apple should completely and utterly dump Google. Apple should not give Google any chance whatsoever to data-mine iOS users and earn revenue.

With that said, Apple should not simply fire from the hip. If Apple wants to move away from Google, which mind you is a good service, they need to replae it with something just as good. Evidently, Apple is taking steps to do that rather than fire from the hip.

Can somebody explain to me how they achieved this?

When they say it's built with "formerly classified missile targeting technology," they don't mean they've strapped a camera on a missile and fired the kit over the terrain right?

I mean I hope not.

Thanks.

1. Multiple photos of the same area from different angles
2. A bunch of clever algorithms
3. Profit!

--Eric

Algorithms clever enough to interpret depth and dimension based on multiple two-D photos. Is that right? And they get those photos from NASA I suppose.

So, do we expect, like Google, Apple will make this viewable/usable to everyone with a computer/hand held product, and not just keep it for Apple use only?

This, like a touch screen interface, is the type of thing that no one company should ever be able to own and keep to itself as its potentially of benefit to anyone on the planet, and as such should not be withheld from access by others with different products.

Can you imagine for example if google maps, google street view and google earth had always been banned from running on any apple products and how wrong that would be for google to do this.

And the same should apply to Apple with this.

Uh, yeah.... really?

Google was (before getting into mobile devices), is, and will always be an ad revenue company. They want as many productsm on as many platforms, in as many hands as possible to serve up advertisements. If this was NOT how they made their money (and almost their only revenue source), then they would be like Microsoft or Apple or any other proprietary company that sells products and services to make money. This is NOT what Google does. They give away things. If they used a different business model, GMaps, GEarth, G-anything would not be free. Cross platform perhaps, but not free.

Now that we've had a business lesson, what the $#)%#) kind of company just shares all their good with their competitors? Are you nuts!?!?

Yes big companies like Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and whoever spend millions buying technologies just to give them away or share them with their competitors so they don't have an edge over one another.

Apple would be stupid if they didn't kill support for other platforms.

Next you'll be telling Cornel Sanders he should share the 7 herbs and spices secret recipe with Popeyes chicken because it burdens the world in having to pick which chicken joint to eat at.

Or maybe Phizer should share the formula for Viagra and 1000 other patented drugs that aren't generic yet out of the goodness of their hearts, since it would benefit pharmacies and impotent men globally.

Hell, why stop there? Apple should make OSX open source and like Linux. It's wrong not to let the world have their technology without a Macintosh.

Maps are one of the key features in a smartphone and Apple is terribly behind on that. No turn by turn mapping and sorely outdated 2D map design. Android has the edge on this.

Both iOS4 and then iOS5 were rumoured to bring a brand new Maps app but all that happened were minor tweaks. iOS6 is best positioned to finally bring this new map app, but I'd like to see it happen way before. They're already years behind, another year is going to hurt the iOS brand even further if they can't catch up.

Turn by turn would be nice, but honestly the Android freeware kind of sucks. Even Google maps kind of suck a lot. Google has also been trying to buy up other mapping companies. Their accuracy is horrible.
(Though I do love that if you use walking directions, and search for a route from the USA to Hawaii it tells you to take a canoe across the ocean.)

really, your phone is a poor substitute for a dedicated gps. It's good in a pinch, but when you're awaiting your next turn and your phone rings, or you lose a signal to the wireless network, you're kind of screwed. IOS needs better maps sure, but maps aren't exactly a deal breaking feature. They're one of the lesser used features. The majority of mapping on smart phones is done when people are in a city looking for something on foot, or at least near by.

Why would you hate a company that had given you so much, effectively for free?

Google Earth, Google Maps and Google Street View.
Millions all around the globe have benefited from these things.

They are a saint when put up against Apple, who would have kept all these things only for itself if they had done them.

Nothing in this world is ever free. You pay a price when you use google's services. You just don't see it, but it's there. :)

Jeeeeeezus. That is so much more impressive than Google Street View.

My jaw literally dropped a little.

Why would you compare it to google street view and not google earth? You're literally comparing Apple's and Oranges here.

----------

Only for iphone 5 I bet... even though it can run on todays hardware.

Well, you mean the iPhone 6. The fifth iPhone is called the 4s.

I use map quest's free turn by turn app that also speaks street names. It's been incredibly accurate. If the phone rings, don't get it. But it will continue to give directions. It's not a heads up view, but I've learned to like the map view. Heads up views are kind of limiting unless you're really really just driving completely blind. Who looks for something on foot? I guess that's big city thinking. In ATL, you drive, park, get out and go in. I've never seen anyone walking around with a GPS or using an iPhone as a GPS.

Then Apple would have to default Bing as the default search provider. ;)

The amount of Google hate in this thread is excessive. If you hate Google so much, change your search provider, stop using Google Maps (there's Bing Maps and Wikimapia) and Google Chrome.
