Guess those profit margins were hella low

Seriously... base model aside, why buy a MacBook when you can get a better performing Air
because MB formfactor is MUCH more portable and just makes more sense.it is ultra portable with pretty much same footprint as an iPad.
if anything,it's new MB Air that doesn't make sense as a product between MB and MB Pro.

I have to say I'm quite surprise about this, but on the other hand it does start simplifying the product line a bit. I wonder if sales of the Macbook were not that great and that was one reason

Apple has killed this product and brought it back before. I wonder if it will eventually come back as an ARM Mac someday. Would be the perfect product for it.
Exactly my thoughts. No crummy keyboard next time around.

Well, I'll switch the the Macbook Air and get a gym membership so that I will be strong enough to carry around that heavier laptop with double the ports, massive storage, thunderbolt technology.

Doesn't it make sense if an ARM based macbook is impending?

It is unlikely Apple would kill the macbook brand. Earlier in the comments someone said the macbook was killed once before and brought back. Can you write up something about when this happened and possibly offer a forecast for a return with an ARM processor?

seriously these people are complaining about a SLIGHT difference in weight...
Since when is 38% “slight”?

My guess is that the 12” form factor isn’t capable of fitting into the 9W TDP of the coming Ice Lake Y chips.

My launch 2015 MB "discontinued" itself into about 18 months later whilst multitasking a backup.

I'm not sure which boiled my blood more...the fanless thermal clusterf*** design that, unattended, could have started a house fire, or the subsequent discovery that the SSD was soldered directly onto the deep fried logic board with no bypass rescue port (subsequently introduced in the 2016 MBP) to access my data.

The epitome of style over substance. Good riddance.

Same here. Mine was three years old, though and I installed the Catalina public beta a few days ago. Apple Store says the SSD is destroyed and asks for € 700 to replace it. I'll just get a € 80 external SSD to boot from and keep using it until it falls apart..

F***** I travel a lot and I need a MacBook with that form factor as the 13” is close to impossible to use comfortably on a plane/train.

Any 12” PCs that you guys are aware of?

I love my fanless 2017 MacBook. I hope they release a new fanless MacBook design someday but my current one should be fine for 2-3 more years.

Wow. I don't think this product ever really made a ton of sense in the lineup because it was similar in price to the MacBook Pro and didn't really provide a "killer-feature" over the MacBook Air (particularly after the refresh).

That being said...it's always interesting to see Apple kill off product lines. And isn't this the second time they've killed the MacBook line? Seems like it would have made more sense to just rename MacBook Air to MacBook.
The “killer feature” was that you could carry both an iPad mini and a MacBook and it would still weigh less than the Air. To me it was the Air that makes no sense. It uses essentially the same processor as the MacBook, weighs nearly as much as the Pro (which now has a quad-core processor), and isn’t much cheaper.

Pretty sure it was bad sales of the Retina MacBook that did it in. Apple has gone on record as saying something to the effect of 'as long as it sells, we'll keep making it.'

Makes sense that the function key rMBP and the single-port rMB were not that popular due to the fact the single USB-C port was a huge liability, and the function key rMBP was treated like the red-headed stepchild, never really getting speed bumps or upgrades.

Dell XPS 13 is your best bet for small, light, similar 12inch MacBook footprint. Plus you get ooodles more power. I have both MacBook/XPS and use them all the time. Great travel companions.

Is there really that much difference in having 2 USB-C ports, particularly since they are on the same side?

The HP Spectre is pretty good, too.

s

because so they can release it in the future with the ARM
[doublepost=1562677555][/doublepost]so now I have the limited version... wish I got the rose gold one back then.

That's why I got the rose gold version of the iPhone SE. I knew it'd be my "as long as possible" phone, so I wanted the uniqueness of the only 4" iPhone in rose gold ever made.

Thanks... can you kindly measure the height of both laptops from a table with the lid open? How tall are they?

I just realized something... I don’t know if it’s the case for the rest of the world but here in Spain some MacBook 12” have been out of stock for more than a few weeks, especially in Premium Resellers and Amazon Spain. Months, I would say, in some models. So... this makes the ‘it didn’t sell’ perspective weak in my opinion, and reinforces the idea that this was a long time coming thing.

Why? Maybe Intel’s chaos, maybe Apple’s ARM-based CPU. I’m starting to think both. And they didn’t want this product on sale because it not only breaks the new lineup, but their processors have a pretty low life expectancy as of right now.
