Good!!!
That thing was a good five years out of date, if not more.
Now just replace the Touch Bar M1 MacBook Pro with a new M2 MacBook Air, discontinue the iPod touch, and I think they would have the best lineup they’ve had in years.
They would literally have a product at every price point that I could genuinely recommend, no pulled punches

why discontinue the ipod touch instead of giving it a better Achip and a mild facelift? there is a market for a non-phone music player.

There is no TouchBar M1 in their lineup!

That first Intel iMac had a Core duo chip, not even in Intel‘s current series of chips started in 2009 with the first I three, I five, I seven, etc series
Intel rebranded to make it sound like a quad core. People don't expect Core i5 to be a dual core. They even almost got me one time.

It has more performance than a Core 2 Duo of course, but underneath it all it's still a dual core.

I think Apple must be thinking they need an i3 or i5 dual core replacement chip. Maybe M2 range would have an M2 Mini option with 6 Core (2 fast / 4 slow).

I mean they have left the low end market open for takeover right now. Maybe M1 would be the M2 Lite.

If Apple is selling those M1-based machines without issue or complaint, they probably won't make anything lower end than the main processor. Only thing I can see them adding in the future would be an M1 Bionic, which would be a between the M1 and M1 Pro.

Ah, yes. This is the model my iMac is, bought back in early 2017. I made the mistake of getting a non-retina model with a 1TB fusion drive, but I wanted it as cheap as possible at the time and had no idea how much better a retina screen and SSD would age.

Earlier this year I bought an SSD to boot it off from to extend its life, but it’s still significantly slower than my M1 MBA. Soon I’ll put this to the side and get an ultrawide monitor to hook up to.

That took way longer than expected for Apple to fulfill their contract with Intel and other vendors for the iMac 21.5"

So the remaining Intel Macs are

Next Macs to be updatedReleased as early asApple SoC
iMac 27"Apr 2022M1 Pro & M1 Max
$1,099 Mac miniApr 2022M1 Pro & M1 Max
Mac ProDec 2022Multi M1 Max dies in multi die package
I agree with your timing and SoC choices except for the Mac mini Intel replacements.

I don't believe they'll put the M1 Max in the MM. I think it will be two SKUs of M1 8/16GB and M1 Pro 16/32GB. I think the price of the M1 Max will put the Mini out of reach for its target customer.

That is an expected move.
Only users with intel-virtualization needs could buy this kind of machine.

It uses an older cpu, from a family of processors that will probably lose MacOS support within three years. For what Apple was asking, this is a terrible value.

I see it as a distinct possibility if they want to to improve the economies of scale of the most expensive M1 chip.

I would not be surprised when the iMac 24" would also receive the M1 Pro & M1 Max by April 2022.

They would not have offered these Intel Core chips if the demand wasn't being fulfilled.

No, we need the Touch Bar to inspire irrational hatred and raise heart rates among people who don’t get enough cardiovascular exercise. :)

It’s amazing how many people think it’s a problem if a product line to contains a single product which they personally wouldn’t buy.

If you know your 1970’s television shows, you’ll know that Jamie Summers was a tennis pro before she became bionic.

So, “Bionic” is an upgrade from “Pro”, not a step down.

Will we ever see a Fusion Drive again?
The real question is, will we ever see falling prices and growing sizes on SSD's, ala Moore's Law? I find it weird the the prices of SSD's and RAM have pretty much stagnated over the last several years. All very fine if you're happy with 256GB, but a frustrating rip off to the rest of us. A 1TB SSD should have been the same price as an old 1TB Fusion Drive by now.

Not exactly true. The first intel iMacs we’re core solo. If I remember correctly they were not 64 bit but the next model core duos were 64 bit.
