Schools spending $1,099 on an iMac that's just for web browsing and text creation? ?

Kids can already do that on their smartphones, or with the under $400 Chromebooks the schools have.
You understimate the budgets these schools have that they have to burn or else they lose it.

at least those (usually mbps) have SSDs...
Not at all true.

On a personal note I have used a 2011 iMac with HDD for 10 years as a daily driver. For everything from content co sumptuous to medium level video tent creation (videos and movies, as well as some other things). Zero issues with the speed of the thing, even in 2021.

The downside is the video card crapped out this year and thus, I will be upgrading to a M1 Pro iMac when they release next year. In the interim I have a 2012 iMac coming to me and o cover my needs till then.

My use case is far from unique. Older Macs are still very capable machines. Sure pre OS 10 machines are getting a little long in the tooth but past that they are all still very usable today for many tasks.

The missing price point is key here. No low end iMac? Steve Jobs invented the device for exactly that purpose!

Only a bean counter would do this and not have a replacement already in line.

Oh, and Steve Jobs knew the school market better than Tim Cook too.

why discontinue the ipod touch instead of giving it a better Achip and a mild facelift? there is a market for a non-phone music player.
iPhone profits is why.

Not exactly true. The first intel iMacs we’re core solo. If I remember correctly they were not 64 bit but the next model core duos were 64 bit.
They weren't Core Solo, they were Core Duo, 32-bit.
Then Core 2 Duo, 64-bit next update.

MacRumors...grammar check on aisle 5:

The 21.5-inch model will remain available through third-party providers until supplies last.
That should be "while supplies last", right?

Nice knowing you Intel.

Apple silicon valley chips are just way too good. Real talk!
Yeah, as long as Apple doesn't fubar it all up with all this "big brother spy-on-you all day everyday" stuff, I think the writing is on the wall.

I like this avatar better, by the way; we can see you!

I probably should be looking for a new avatar right about now, too. I just love the SR-71. The epitome of a fully analog plane. The pilot had two sliding throttle controls; one for each engine. From what I read, most of them required fine-adjusting for stable and smooth flight, particularly at supersonic speeds. And those engines were true individuals, just as different as even twin humans can be! So one throttle would always be farther ahead than the other; just like in real life!

Yeah, but Steve isn't running the company from the Great Beyond. So it is (wait for it) what it is.

Well let’s see…
Take the current iPod touch.
Upgrade the one megapixel front camera to a good 12 megapixel wide-angle front camera
Upgrade the back camera from the current iPhone 5 camera to at least the one used in the iPhone 8.
Upgrade the home button to include touch ID.
Upgrade the starting storage to at least 64 GB.
Upgrade the screen to at least a 4.7 inch.
Give the battery a major, major, major, major, major upgrade because the current one is just awful.
Upgrade the CPU to at least the A13.
Give this thing stereo speakers.
Oh wait… that’s just the iPhone SE.
The fact that the iPod touch is still $299 for 128 GB, when literally for an extra 30 bucks you could get an iPhone 8 which has a better processor, better camera, better speakers, better display, better battery life, better everything, or for just another 60 bucks you could get the new SE should prove that the iPod touch has absolutely no place in Apple‘s current lineup.
If you truly need a device just dedicated to music, you can find a used or referbished iPhone with more storage, better speakers, and longer battery life for cheaper.
Hell for music lovers, I would recommend buying an old iPod classic before I would recommend buying the current iPod touch.
I just can’t recommend this product to anyone. It’s just way too expensive for what it is, the camera sucks, the battery life really really sucks, it has an under clocked CPU that’s over five years old, it’s using a display that’s going on a decade now, and it gives absolutely no benefits over similar iPhones from the time period which you can find for cheaper

The iPod Touch should be discontinue:
1. It's a slower version of the iPhone 7. It has:
- The same processors, except with only two cores instead of four
- A smaller screen
- Same graphics processor
- Older bluetooth standard (4.1 vs. 4.2)
- Worse camera (12 megapixels/ 7 megapixels vs. 8 megapixels/ 1.2 megapixels)
- No water resistance

2. As long as the iPod Touch will be updated, so must the iPhone 7 (and the iPhone 8..) because the iPod Touch's specs are lower then the iPhone 7.

3. Used iPhones can be used as an MP3/ movie player easily for children.

I believe next year the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE (Gen 1) will no longer be updated, and the iPod Touch will be killed.

Apple has quietly discontinued the Intel-based 21.5-inch iMac, which had remained available as a low-end configuration suitable for educational institutions. This leaves customers with the 24-inch and 27-inch iMac models to choose from.

A single 21.5-inch iMac configuration remained part of the iMac lineup following Apple's "Unleashed" event last week, but Apple has confirmed it is being discontinued and will no longer be sold through its online store or in Apple retail stores. The 21.5-inch model will remain available through third-party providers until supplies last.

The discontinued 21.5-inch iMac configuration included a 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 for $1,099.

The iMac lineup now starts with the new 24-inch model released in April of this year, with key features including Apple's M1 chip and an updated design available in several colors. The 24-inch iMac starts at $1,299. For customers wanting an even larger iMac, the 27-inch iMac remains in the lineup.

Apple stopped selling several higher-end 21.5-inch iMac configurations after the 24-inch model launched and now the 21.5-inch model has been discontinued entirely. Apple continues to sell some refurbished 21.5-inch iMac models through its online store.

(Thanks, Mark!)

Took this at Camp Zama, Japan if anyone was ever curious about what a Army base sells apple products. Several HomePods and other long time discontinued apple products still on the shelves here. We finally just got AirTags :)

No, we need the Touch Bar to inspire irrational hatred and raise heart rates among people who don’t get enough cardiovascular exercise. :)

It’s amazing how many people think it’s a problem if a product line to contains a single product which they personally wouldn’t buy.
It’s not that, I don’t actually mind that the Touch Bar exists.
I just think that it completely clogs the lineup.
Let’s face it, the M1 MacBook Air and the M1 MacBook Pro overlap in so many areas that if you have to choose one, nine times out of 10 you’re just gonna go with a MacBook Air.
If you’re going for a MacBook Pro, you’re probably just gonna bank on the new 14 inch with the new design, better display, better processor, etc.
The M1 MBP just kind of exists, and it makes the lineup even more complicated because now there’s three different screen sizes for MacBook Pro, and the cheaper one has a Touch Bar while the more expensive ones don’t.
It really is the one Computer in the lineup that just stands out, not really a new MacBook Pro, but not a MacBook Air either.
It serves no purpose that the MacBook Air can’t fill, as it uses the exact same hardware as the MacBook Air, but it’s also not as powerful as the other MacBook Pros.
Those fans don’t make the processor run that much faster, so every single day its existence just becomes more and more pointless

Wasn’t the original iMac $1299? The exact same price as the current M1?
Also I don’t expect this price point to be empty very long, I guarantee you next spring when they introduce the M2 iMac, they’ll keep around a basic silver low-end M1 for education

I agree with all of your points, but I do not think that the iPhone 7 will have its support dropped next year.
Especially after the 6S and iPad Air2 got 15 and run it like champs.
Now, the 6S, SE1 and Touch 7 maybe, but even then I have my doubts.
Apple might squeeze a seventh year out of them just to match with their obsolescence program, where devices get hardware support for seven years.
It’s unlikely, but then again we all thought iOS 14 and 15 would cut them and here we are.
The iPhone 8 is absolutely going nowhere on that support list next year though, they’re still selling it on there refurbished site, and it features the exact same design as the current SE.
So I wouldn’t be surprised at all if next year, iOS 16 simply requires a quad core A10 and up.

so it cannot be used for web browsing and basic functionality like text creation and such?

you should read the comments in the Mac section how many people still love their 2010-2105 Macs ...
At what price? It’s fine if you want to be a tool and pay full price for it in late-2021 no less.

No one is saying that, but it’s ridiculous for Apple to be selling a baseline 2017 computer for $1099 in 2021.
If anyone is buying a 2010–2015 Mac today, they’re definitely not paying anywhere close to 1100 for it.

It also costs $200.

By this logic, Toyota should discontinue the Corolla because people could just by their teenagers a used Lexus EX.

My buddy bought one last summer (2020) for med school and he says it’s painfully slow. Surprised they didn’t continue to at least upgrade the internals. Who in the world buys this over the new 24”??
