This is very disappointing news...
With the Macbook Pro that I just got... I'm expecting new display so that I can replace my dual thunderbolt displays.

So much for expectation!

That said I do wonder if it's time for Apple to spin off the Mac division like it spun off ARM or Claris (Filemaker). Mac seems to be the redheaded stepchild these days and Apple seems unsure what to do with it.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many developers for the various Apple mobile devices do not use Apple computers?

Now if they'd they'd only completely OpenSource OS X I'd be able to build my dream machine. Pipe dream for sure, but so was the move to x86 way back in the day.

Despite my critical views of the TBD, I will say though Apple shouldn't give up on this product segment. Monitors in general could use some innovation, especially in regards to panel thickness, back light bleed, warm/cool light uniformity, and overall design.

Abandoning the TBD also puts products like the Mac, Mac Mini, and especially the new Macbook (with it's single port USB-C configuration) in a precarious position. Apple is all about the ecosystem, so to not have an in-house external display option for these products seems a bit odd.

I'd love for Apple to explore a 5K OLED monitor, with a razor thin screen design and curved aluminum base. Add in support for TB3 over USB-C. Allow for all the latest color support like full Rec 709 and DCI-P3 for professional work. There's lots Apple could do to re-up the TBD as a leading, professional product.

I don't see the big deal with Apple discontinuing this display, really?...Does that really mean the company is getting away from building computers you want to use?

When the latest Mac Pro is 3yrs old and now this - yes they are not building computers I want to use anymore.

It is a worrying trend. I hope Apple return to their roots one day. I don't much fancy the new direction Apple are taking, watches and new watch bands over powerful and functional computers. Just awful. Fingers crossed for the return of an expandable Mac Pro and professional grade monitor.
Not going to happen. There are just too many signs all pointing toward Tim shutting down the computer business. I mean really...an iPad running iOS replacing a powerful Mac? Must be the side effects of medical marijuana.

Most people could manage better computer progression black out drunk.

I don't know.
With the PC market in constant decline every quarter, I would think it is now the opposite.

It is more likely that computer monitor sales are in a rapid decline as well and thus Apple sees no point in continuing to sell separate displays as it is no longer profitable enough for them.
Yes, but the tablet market has also been in decline - as well as the iphone market now. I don't know what the long term plan is here, but putting fewer eggs in your basket sets you up for a big failure if one egg breaks. Tim is really betting the store on watch bands.

you can always wait a few years until you can buy their car.
If the software in the car is as buggy as the last release of OS X, I'd be afraid to drive it

Announcing discontinuation without a replacement sounds like Apple is leaving the monitor business. It doesn't take a genius to extrapolate what that might portend for a new Mac Pro. Hopefully Mac Pros are updated but I'm not sanguine.

On the contrary, it might allow for the return of a more traditional Mac Pro (expandable tower design). If there are no Thunderbolt monitors, then Apple can simply provide TB3 ports on the Logic board (for use with high speed storage etc.) and use run-of-the mill workstation-class graphics cards with DisplayPort and HDMI outputs. This negates then need to run TB through the graphics card.
A good point from a technical perspective Blue Sun but my comment is oriented to Apple's future business decisions since that seems to be the driving factor now at Apple. It's likely Apple's accountants have already assessed headless Mac sales volume versus the expense to manufacture them ( and in the nMP's case, potentially redesign it ) and made some decisions. It's possible the completely out-of-date and overpriced-for-today's-market TB display was just low-hanging fruit as they roll out their decisions.

Hopefully some headless Macs will survive and personally hope it's the Mac Pro.

So they finally announced something related to their monitors. I read threads just a few days ago that people wished Apple would say anything even if it was they were discontinuing monitors, now everyone is crying that they let us know... I'm really glad they did. I bought a LG 4096x2160 display for my Mac Pro a while ago anyway. I've tried every Windows from 1.0 - 10 and I prefer macOS which I've used since OS X 10.1 and my Mac Pro will keep going for years anyway. I can't even imagine what the future will bring... think about it... the iPhone 1 only came out 9 years ago (June 29) and everyone thought I was crazy for getting it release day.

Why so? It has been one of the best quality displays available in the market IMO.

I'm not sure what you mean by quality.

If you mean color reproduction quality you can get better results with Dell monitors that cost half of the price and are still considered a bit overpriced...

For the same price you can get IPS 4K professional monitors with very low Delta E.

If by quality you mean the aluminium case, then yeah it's pretty nice. I doubt someone buys a monitor to stare at its case though.

Their official statement really leads me to believe they're just going to straight up not make a standalone display anymore, though.

I agree, and possibly that they won't be making any new Mac Pro.

Apple is indeed now literally a phone & mobile product company prioritizing stupid e-moji over updating Thunderbolt Displays and other much loved Apple hardware. Delivering to the minority is not in TC's thinking. But business modals change with changing trends for the majority. So as a company now targeting the mainstream majority it is obviously clear you go where the honey smells the sweetest...and TC loves to count his beans.

But leaving dinosaur hardware at ridic prices and leaving customers waiting for upgrades for so long is a complete insult when notification or termination could have been given much earlier. Ignore the minority but adore the majority.

Just shows you where their priorities are with no love for the old school in the days when Apple took pride in their displays and updates to their hardware as it became available. While this is not a major profit zone for Apple anymore, you would expect them to make more effort in upgrading hardware to reflect their price points...or have the common sense or good judgement to cease production of slow moving items earlier which are out of touch in value with other competitor products at the same price point or even less (and sell off as refurbs online at attractive pricing until stock is gone).

Maybe because the thunderbolt port is a joke and nobody uses it?
This is just simply not true, this product and most TB products are used everyday by professionals like myself in the film industry. My clients give me thunderbolt raids as the only connection that can offer high enough speeds for working with 4k and 8k footage. If you don't use it, it doesn't mean it doesn't have its place. The design of the monitor as well as the functionality was worth the price. today, no. but a couple years ago yes.

Im starting to becoming VERY anti Tim Cook right now....

it started with making todays "social issues" a priority and ended with lack of innovation. And Ive been using apple since the 80's.

The display is nice but the problem is, being Apple, the product doesn't adjust to the market and its prices. While it may have been worth the price tag at launch, holding the same price when other monitors have exceeded it isn't a recipe for success hence the news we're getting.

On kijiji, you can get these for $400 or less. Still on the pricey side but you're still getting a good monitor at a significantly cheaper price.

There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users,” said an Apple spokesperson."

Yeah, like Windows. I've been a Mac guy since 1994 but I'm typing this on a Dell Inspiron 15 that I bought for $350 at Staples. I was going to buy a refurb MacBook of some flavor but the superior MacOS would have cost me at least $500 more to use on a machine with much less power, RAM and storage.

I will pay the Mac tax----but not that much. Sorry to say it, but Apple is a phone/tablet company these days.

i totally agree with you.
but in spite of (our) hopes on this point, apple will most likely feel that the macbook travel-less "typing on an iPad" feel is more advanced, and, use that keyboard on new macbook pros.
thats the biggest reason why i decided to go ahead and get the latest macbook air. its a great machine and will last a few years. also I'm heavily "invested" in magsafe 2 adapters everywhere i use my mac.
I never understood being "invested" in Magsafe 2...
All laptop chargers are different...

I've been very happy with two ATDs for a few years now and for the work I do the ATDs still suffice, but I do hope the forthcoming MacBook Pro can work with one. If the rumors are true and the new MBP will have the Thunderbolt 3 version of USB-C (unlike the MacBook version), then hopefully a USB-C/TB3 to Thunderbolt adapter will enable this and keep the ATD's F/W and USB ports alive. Else buying the new MBP means buying new monitors (and USB-C hub), too...

Apple...

Continues their migration away from computers as they feed their obsession for iOS and gadgets like Apple Watch.

A sad day for those of us who love our Macs.
Seems to me this would be a great time for another company to step up and fill the void Apple is leaving in the professional market. Apple's computer division may not generate the big $$ iphone does, but it's still profitable. Just like Apple rose up with a superior quality product, another company can do the same. Only a company as rich as Apple could blow off a $5bn a yr business with a shrug.
