I personally think this is the end of the Cinema Displays. I suspect like many 4K or 5K displays It'll end up costing a lot more to produce than an iMac, and people will likely just opt for the 27" 5K iMac's.

Now obviously I could be wrong, but at this time Dell offers a 5K display at $2199USD, HP at $1999USD. While an iMac 27" 5K goes for $1799USD.

Plus when you have a statement like "There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users," said an Apple spokesperson." That to me implies that Cinema Display's are over forever :p.

Paving the way for new emoji shaped monitors

Um, what? There are monitors half the price with better resolution.

Don't forget colour accuracy. That is worth paying for, but yes you can get a better deal elsewhere. Dell and Samsung are a good place to start, but don't go for the cheapest options.

Thickness of monitor and bezel is of no real importance to me.
The 27" imac 5k is a beautifull device in my opinion.... they should sell it without computer guts.

if price was right I would go for one of those

Even apple admitted "There are a number of great third-party options available for Mac users." This comment leads me to believe that they are discontinuing external apple displays for an extended period of time.

Makes sense. They're thicker than the iMac that has a better (retina) display AND a computer behind it. And cost almost the same.

it is funny how people whine cause they need to pay extra to upgrade memory or ssd in macbooks or imac, but find $1000 5 years old display just fine, when competition for half price blows it out of water.

Basically. I have one, have been happy with it over the years. Got my 4 years out of her. But she is dated. She dies....she will be missed but her replacement even before this announcement would have been something else.

Yes the convenience of the ports on the back going across the one t-bolt was nice. Not a feature today I would spend money on though. Courtesy of apples electronic anorexia phase and me and others dragged into accepting buy a dongle/adapter as our mantra for a happy apple life....that cable not as relevant as it used to be. Hubs due to shrinking number of USB...we have them for when away from the display if mb(p) users. Ethernet to usb adapter to cover the removed ethernet port from long ago...check (I use this at work, wireless not always an option). For many the bits and pieces there already to go 3rd party and not go but what about all that stuff that one cable makes so convenient.

Basically at this point the t-bolt display is desk jewelry (I will grant she is pretty lol). Which if apple is pulling and not keeping around to squeeze out some more money...I gather its not even in bringing in the sales from people this means something to much these days.

Will we get something new from apple? Maybe. Will it sell, maybe (beyond the usual zealot buys, they are a guarantee as we know). I know for my case for the money apple charged for this, and a predicted increase if a replacement...I'd rather have me a dual setup from dell/others next time around. Will it be 5k...nah. I don't need that. I don't eve shoot 4k video, videography my main hobby at this time and apple pro res 422 at 30 or 24 fps 1080p does me fine.

The Dell UP2715K 27" 5K display is on amazon.de €873 = $991 on and the cheapest 5K iMac on apple.at and apple.de is €2099 = $2383. That is big difference. But I don't know how good that one is compared to the iMac display.

I just saw on amazon.com it's $1540 for the same Dell and on the German/Austrian website is even 19/20% tax included. That's still a little cheaper but not that much difference to the iMac.

Why can Dell sell so much cheaper here than in the USA and Apple is much more expensive? Really strange...

Apple and oranges. The TBD is a display and thunderbolt dock... can you buy a comparable display and thunderbolt dock for half the price of the TBD? I bought the TBD with my Macbook Air and its been a great combo. If they keep minimalist MacBooks with no ports, not sure what they expect people to use with it to expose the additional IO ability when in the office.

Exactly, this is the same reason I bought mine, only mine is for a MBP so that I could have Dual Displays. I haven't looked lately but at the time there were no good alternative docking solutions.

wondering if they did this now to pave the way for a TV in a couple years (or less). They're clearly not interested in the display market, and having this guy around with a new tv could raise some eyebrows to customers who aren't as informed as, say, macrumors readers.

It makes about as much sense for Apple to make what is essentially a commodity display as it does for them to make a laser printer. Which they did for years until decent laser printers became a commodity.
An Apple secondary display should be a part of the portfolio. A second display is almost a universal requirement now for any kind of productivity work. Having a brown Dell monitor next to an aluminum iMac is kind of sad looking, may as well just get two infinity edge Dells, it would look and perform nicer.

Maybe if they stop making displays they can finally focus on other hardware? Like ipads!!! Enough with updating the computers already!

Apple today told several news sites that it plans to discontinue its Thunderbolt Display, which has been available for purchase online and in Apple retail stores since it was first introduced in the summer of 2011.

Apple will continue to sell existing Thunderbolt Display stock so long as it remains available, but once stock is exhausted, the Thunderbolt Display will no longer be available as production is ceasing. It is not clear why Apple has decided to make an announcement concerning the discontinuation of the display and if it means a new 4K or 5K display is on the horizon.

Stock shortages ahead of WWDC sparked rumors that Apple might be planning to introduce a new display at the event, but no new hardware appeared and Apple instead focused on software for iOS devices, Macs, Apple TVs, and Apple Watch devices.

Rumors have suggested Apple is working on a 5K display, and if true, such a display could feature a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, and a design that mimics the latest iMacs. Speculation suggests it could come equipped with a built-in GPU or use a DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport setup to stitch two halves of a display together to make one seamless display.

If a new Thunderbolt Display is in the works, it could launch alongside next-generation Skylake Retina MacBook Pros, which are rumored to be in the works for late fall.

I think they're out of that business, which actually makes sense. There are a lot of other great options out there and cheaper.

Not by a long shot. 2560x1440 110ppi display for $1000 in 2016? USB 2 ports?

My $500 Dell P2715Q blows it out of the water, is matte, 4K, IPS, 3X USB 3.0 ports, identified by macs as a Retina display with multiple scaling options and is an absolute dream to look at/edit video on. I'm sure anyone with $1000 could do even better than me, but I opted for two of these Dells to go with a custom built 12 core Haswell-E/980Ti hackintosh because I simply couldn't push myself to buy a 2013 Mac Pro with worse video and CPU for more money. I'll pay the apple tax all day, but for frick's sake at least keep the hardware current so I don't feel totally jipped.

Their official statement really leads me to believe they're just going to straight up not make a standalone display anymore, though.
I have the same monitor with my MBPRO. Abosolutely gorgeous monitor! 500 dollars!!!! 4K!!!

Well I refuse to put a Samsung or Dell monitor on my desk, so I guess it's just iMacs from here on out.

Yes, it's called the iMac 21" 4K & 27" 5K and you can buy it now and activate target display mode.
If Apple still charges $1K for an outdated 27" display, then what would the price point of a 4 or 5K monitor be ?
$1499 and $1799 ? right.. that's the price of the current iMacs.

Just removing the logic board would not lower costs significantly enough to squeeze in between $1K - $1.5K and still be a viable option when compared to competitors offerings.
I don't think target display mode is available anymore.

Oh, so its all about the looks for you...? I guess that's why Apple is happy to charge you $999 for 2011 technology.
