Apple Discontinuing MobileMe Retail Boxes, Preparing for Free Overhauled Version?

I'm sure there will be an announcement about it at the iPad event next week, you know, the iPad being a mobile device...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Ive been wondering why it looks like buying the box from amazon and other places has recently increased. My subscription is up for renewal and I have been planning to buy it else where.

Why not make it free. What is included that someone else isn't offering for free or much cheaper? I'm having a hard time justifying renewing. Id just hate to lose my email address right now.

I've only had MM since April of last year.

So when it renews how does that work if you buy it from BH or Amazon? Not sure I understand. Won't Apple send you an email asking you to renew? Then if you guy it from Amazon how do you activate your renewal?

If you set up your Mobile Me account Apple has your email...

Last Nov. someone on Amazon was selling old Mobile Me boxes for $45 each so I bought a couple -- one to renew in Jan '11 and another for Jan '12. I'm thinking I better go enter that code for Jan '12 ASAP. If Mobile Me does go free or they lower the price I'm guessing Apple will compensate paid users w/ Apple credit for the balance of their paid membership. At any rate I don't want to be stuck with an unusable code b/c the page to enter the renewal code is taken down.

So let me get this straight...Apple recently built a huge multi-billion dollar data center for potential use for a service that they would give away for free? Yeah, right! MobileMe will always be a paid service

Uh, last I checked over-the-air TV was still "free". Do you think there is NO cost to consumers for that programming? Just b/c a company doesn't charge consumers for a service doesn't mean they don't have a business model to make money from that service. Apple especially.

The answer is simple and obvious. As Apple stores are eliminated physical software from their shelves, it only makes perfect sense that MobileMe will be moved to the AppStore. Every Mac now ships with it. There's no need to have a physical disc, etc. Not that there was EVER a real reason. But there ya go. Also - with the proliferation of the iPad (no disc drive) and MacBook Air (no drive) - why have physical media anyway?

I dont no if somebody already answered this but the mobile me in store does not come with a disc. All it is a CD key with a bunch of advertising.

I'll believe in a free MobileMe when I see it, having just renewed for another year last month.

Same here. I've been a subscriber since it was first offered (at the end of the free iTools days). I just renewed my subscription last month, too.

If Apple wants to offer it for free again, that's fine. But I'll expect a prorated refund.

Yeah I'm going to be pissed off as we paid €120 in January for our extended family pack and extra email only accounts.

I make very good use of mobile me, now if they offered basic service free fair enough, but if they give all of it away then they need to re-imburse users for the months withstanding they have already paid for.

3 days away from my service ending... kind of hoping it goes free, I'd love to be able to keep my e-mail addresses. I can't justify renewing it anymore though, there's more and more free or less expensive services that are arguably better.

Lala?????

Just me or does anyone think that lala acquisition might have something to do with this. makes sense that other features will come free tonight or tomorrow. Streaming service like lala seems most likely to be added for maybe paid subscription?

I was all excited for a few seconds.

I don't have email set up in the iTunes account I sync my iPad on - my MBP is still running tiger so I sync to the kids mini and they so aren't getting access to my email.

Then i was going to manually set it up, but I like the way it is now.... I will have to ponder it.

But thanks for letting me know it is possible!!!!

my mobile me expires march 16. does anyone think they will talk about it at the march 2 event. i need to upgrade but i hope they announce what they are doing with it. ideas?

exciting news, other than the fact that my 'auto-renewal' just occurred :)

Lol ME TOO! :( I seriously hope they will do something for us like at least a partial refund if it goes free in the next month or two. I have been a loyal MobileMe user for a few years so that would be a tough pill to swallow!
