As you identify, you were a 4+ year user, past tense. That is, you already used the service and you have therefore paid the fee to use that service. You are not entitled to proration sir just because you have used the service in the past.

However, if you paid for a year and are only partially into the service agreement period, then yes I agree you should get some proration in return. Aside from that, seems like you have paid and used the service provided.

He does not indicate he is a past user. What he said was "As a 4+ year user...", then goes on to say that he continues to use his .mac email address which would seem to indicate that he is in fact a current MobileMe customer.

Assuming all of what I just wrote is true, then I think he is correct. IF the service is switched to free then FOW (and myself and other current MobileMe subcribers), should be prorated for whatever length of service is left on our contract. I hardly find that unfair.

I have no idea if this is a coincidence or not, but in my MobileMe account setting, it says there is scheduled maintenance for the site tonight between 22:00 and 22:20. Just figured I'd bring it up... Also, this is my first post ever on MacRumors, even though I've been reading it for a while now. Woohoo.:)

I never said I wanted a refund on what I’ve used. If that is what I wanted, I would have said I want a refund for the last four years plus. What I want is to have my remaining membership prorated , as in the time between when it becomes free to the time my current subscription ends, should be returned to me...assuming it becomes a free service.

I've seen a couple of posts on here from people saying they "hope it's not free". Why would anyone hope for that? I can see expecting to have to pay, or "hoping" that if it goes free, there's no compromise of service. But to just flatly state you hope you get to keep paying makes no sense at all.

I just let my MobileMe subscription go without renewing. I used it for syncing my bookmarks/calendar/address book. That's it. That was very useful and convenient, but I just can't see that it's worth $100/year, or even $65/year from Amazon. Honestly, until this thread, I didn't even know there was a cheaper option.

I understand your point. Many people here - myself included - believe that if something goes free then the company gets that money in another way.

People only fool themselves when they say "Google gives me the same thing for free". It's not free. It comes at a price. They data mine your emails/calendar/pictures/docs to better target ads. In short they sell your information and make money that way.

All companies exist to make profits. Now, if Apple should go free with MobileMe then I would start wondering how they make money out of it. As it is now, I am quite happy to pay EUR 79.00 per year knowing that my data is not being data mined. And I'm quite happy to read my emails without ads cluttering the browser.

Furthermore, if you pay for a service you can also avail of some sort of tech support. I sleep well knowing that if I can't access my .mac email I can chat online with an Apple rep. I've had issues with .mac in the past and eventually all my support tickets were solved. The same wouldn't apply for Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo etc.

But then again, I understand that lots of people don't mind that and prefer something free + ads.

they pay for it by selling you thousands of dollars worth of devices required to access it!:D:apple:

So if my math is right if it went free at the event next week and my family pack expires in August I should wind up with 65-70 bucks credit on my iTunes account...that I could very well live with:D:apple:

people wonder how can apple offer it for free. Well youtube is free and can you imagine how many videos they host and how much their data centers cost them? If they can do it, Apple can. Now you know why apple doesn't pay dividends. You will get mobile me free instead

Youtube is full of advertising - .mac doesn't. May seem like a small thing, but that is why I would prefer it stayed a paid for clean service.

Hmm, wonder if I should buy this years renewal, and tack it on. Just in case the boxed version becomes hard to find.

Free isn't a bad thing, not sure how they would fund it without ads though. I wish they would allow us to allocate storage on the family accounts. I am only using three of 5 and it would be nice to split up the rest of the space amongst us.

I dont understand why people think it should be free...its a really great service and worth the money if you are an avid user of MobileMe...I bet more then half of the people crying saying they want it for free dont even know what MobileMe does or what it is used for besides email and syncing...I feel if it went free, it would get watered down and some of the features may start to go away...I say leave it as is, free trials to get people interested and then yearly subscriptions to keep people hooked.

Now I have set up a free trial :p

I recon that apple will make the mail, contacts, calendars features free to complete with google.

Maybe even gallery if they are feeling nice, or want to integrate it into ping a bit more.

Storage will be paid though, maybe 2GB free like dropbox.

This is great news but also Bad news at the same time...

I'm only 20 days into my 2nd year of (full payment) me account which is sicken when i use this account for all my work related mail and cloud based space, which means i need this account to be active.

Now would anyone be able to tell me if there is a refund method Apple are thinking about if this service becomes 100% free...
