As a four year + user, they better prorate me the difference if they take the service is made free.

I hope they keep charging for it. Many time when I use my .mac email address at an Apple store, I get s comment like "have not heard one of those in a while"

Yeah they've been up to something lately.. they have another planned maintenance window tonight.

My MobileMe just auto-renewed. If they switch to a free model, will apple reimburse the customers that have payed or compensate in some way?

They better.. at least move the prorated funds to an store credit.

Agreed. Mine is renewing in 2 weeks, and I just ordered a discounted renewal from Ebay. It would be nice to be pro-rated if they do indeed move to some sort of free service (assuming that fits my needs, i.e., more limited storage).

Too bad for people who paid?

I wonder if they will do anything for the folks who just paid the hundred bucks for MobilMe a few months ago? iTunes credit? We can hope.

Mobile Me will have iTunes support for activation/sync//backup for iOS devices. In the future there will be no need for PCs or Macs.

Probably not free.

If MM does go free, I expect at least a portion of it will be paid (i.e more iDisk storage.) Which is what you will get if you have months left on a recent purchase.

So let me get this straight...Apple recently built a huge multi-billion dollar data center for potential use for a service that they would give away for free? Yeah, right! MobileMe will always be a paid service

i bet it will be free if you buy Lion, which in turn will cost over $100

Not sure what they have planned yet

Exactly. Apple is a charity.

Right. They will definitely make money from that center. They still might give away diskspace. Google does it, right? It may be a way of selling services that require disk space and the added peace of mind that purchases are backed up.

not offered

try to setup your shopping cart for a new mac on their store site. They dont even offer it anymore as an addon if you buy today. Something is definitely up

I don't understand all these rumors of free. Is it only wishful thinking? There may be a "free" entry-level tier, allowing limited storage and features. But I don't see Apple abandoning the subscription model, especially for those who have larger online storage requirements.

I agree and besides who is to even say that the "new" service will even be something people are really into/want...? :/

name change

if they do make changes to service, I hope a name change is in the works. I never liked mobile me. mac.com seemed better and promoted the mac OS.

Because of the obvious

it has to do with the fact that people are materialistic. They want some "thing" in exchange for the money they pay. Just a simple little I have to have something to show for my purchase that I can point to.

As long as it is still a paid product, there is a need to have this box to give at the point of sale. After it goes free, no more boxes. Just download from web.

I guess what I'm not understanding, why continue to sell a product to people that your about to launch as a free service to new customers?

What are they going to do for those whom have already paid or will in the near future once its launched as a free service, a refund a bigger storage vault etc?

youtube is free

people wonder how can apple offer it for free. Well youtube is free and can you imagine how many videos they host and how much their data centers cost them? If they can do it, Apple can. Now you know why apple doesn't pay dividends. You will get mobile me free instead

Why?

As you identify, you were a 4+ year user, past tense. That is, you already used the service and you have therefore paid the fee to use that service. You are not entitled to proration sir just because you have used the service in the past.

However, if you paid for a year and are only partially into the service agreement period, then yes I agree you should get some proration in return. Aside from that, seems like you have paid and used the service provided.

I've seen a couple of posts on here from people saying they "hope it's not free". Why would anyone hope for that? I can see expecting to have to pay, or "hoping" that if it goes free, there's no compromise of service. But to just flatly state you hope you get to keep paying makes no sense at all.

I just let my MobileMe subscription go without renewing. I used it for syncing my bookmarks/calendar/address book. That's it. That was very useful and convenient, but I just can't see that it's worth $100/year, or even $65/year from Amazon. Honestly, until this thread, I didn't even know there was a cheaper option.
