Produce 1 million units then pull the plug for no reason? nah.

I would have liked to see one though

Apple has lots of dumb ideas. Excluding a stylus when a huge part of their target audience is "artists" is one of them.

Sure that's not something everyone needs, but for a massive, massive chunk of Apple's users, it's something they want. If you don't believe me, just go to Amazon and search for phone styluses. Look how many there are. They all suck. And yet, there are bajillions of them, because those of us who would pay for them, are willing to throw massive amounts of money at the problem.

Let me put it another way. If you own an iPhone 14 Pro Max right now, would you be willing to spend another $500 on a stylus? Another $1000? No? Because I would, in a heartbeat. I don't need it for handwriting recognition. I need it so I can have one device I can draw on, accurately, as well as all the other stuff. Right now I have an iPad mini and an iPhone I carry everywhere, and I hate it. I'd rather just have the iPhone.

It's not just for doodling. I draw *everything* out, from flow charts for code to stupid little robots. A stylus is indispensable to me.

So if Apple is looking for an easy way to double profits from a section of their users, adding a stylus is the low hanging fruit.

I wish they would add support for the Apple Pencil 2, which I already own for my iPad Pro. I'd upgrade to the iPhone 15 in a heartbeat if that were one of the features it supported. Apple does not need to make a cheaper pencil device when people would be happy to get an Apple Pencil 2.

Just let iPad Pros dual-boot macOS. Boom. Apple kills the convertible tablet market overnight.

PS: Always assumed the lack of Pencil support on the iPhone is due to it being too long. A $79 ‘Pencil mini’ makes sense. Assume it’d only work on the iPhone 15 and up as it’d need the side-magnet trick. No more SIM slot taking up space before the power button… I can see it happening.

Apple planned to introduce a new $49 Apple Pencil this year that was compatible with iPhones, but scrapped the plans at the last minute, claims a sketchy new rumor coming out of Asia.

apple-pencil-red.jpg

According to a Weibo post, shared on Twitter by DuanRui, Apple allegedly intended to release the new Apple Pencil, codenamed "Maker" (or, more likely, "Marker") at its September 2022 event, and even went so far as to mass produce over one million units of the accessory, only to can its launch at the eleventh hour for unspecified reasons.

To cut costs, the device allegedly lacked pressure sensing technology or a rechargeable battery, and instead utilized an onboard chip to power the stylus through the iPad or iPhone screen, similar to how Samsung's S-Pen stylus works.

At $49, the unreleased Apple Pencil would have been significantly cheaper than the first-generation and second-generation Apple Pencil models, which are priced at $99 and $129, respectively.

Unfortunately, the source of the Apple Pencil rumor has no track record, so the claims need to be taken with a large pinch of salt. Furthermore, this isn't the first time we've heard rumors of an Apple Pencil being developed to work with iPhones, none of which have come to fruition.

Still, a battery-less Apple Pencil would pair well with the latest tenth-generation iPad, which comes with a USB-C port and requires an ungainly $9 Lightning dongle to work with the first-generation Apple Pencil. Again though, why Apple would kill plans for an accessory that had entered mass production is unclear.

If it really was a thing, and so many units were manufactured by Apple, then past history would suggest some units will eventually be leaked. Would you welcome an Apple Pencil for iPhone? Let us know in the comments.

Agreed. I would pay $400 for an Apple Pencil that would work with the 15 Pro Max in a heartbeat. I have been testing an iPad Mini and an iPad Pro using the AP2, but carrying an extra device just fails for me.

I know it’s not practical for most people, but as an artist who loves to doodle at all times, I’d love to be able to use an apple pencil on my iPhone when I don’t have my iPad with me. Yeah, i know I can always quickly use my finger, but it’s not as accurate or precise.

Same. Plus my fat calloused fingers work so poorly for drawing on a small device as to be unusable.
