will this remote work for macbooks? is it basically tied to the dock or is it just an apple universal remote?

Works perfectly on my MBP (tried it out yesterday). The remote works by itself. It's not tied to the dock or anything.

There is not an adapter included in the package but Apple does sell them. Also several companies will include adapters to use with the Universal Dock with cases (ex. Switcheasy).

So now this 'unanswers' my question. Since your case is including the adapter to work with this dock, I ask again: Does this dock work with an iPhone newer than the original one? e.g., a naked 3G or 3GS? Or does it give the "this device will not work with this accessory" message?

BL.

It's compatible with pretty much all iDevices from Apple, including all generations of iPhones. The iPhone 4 requires a separate adapter in order to make it fit into the dock. Certain case manufacturers have their own adapters to use with their case however not all do. As far as working, or being compatible with other iPhones, this is universal so it will work with all of them. Whether or not they fit in requires additional adapters depending on your case or unit.

I am very impressed with the quality of the dock and remote. I still don't think it is worth 50 bucks but I am quite content with it for 20.

I've been wanting to get one but couldn't bring myself to buy it at the Apple Store for $50, especially since last I checked they still weren't including the iPhone 4 adapter in the box. They were still selling through the older boxes with only the 3GS/3G adapter and various iPod adapters included.

My understanding though is that the older universal docks don't work with the iPhone 4 and give the error messages, etc., and won't even charge. Like my Bose Soundock will play music but not charge my iP4 and I have to get past 2 error messages each time. But it looks like even if this unit doesn't have the iP4 inserts, it will work correctly.

The best thing about it is that you can go with no insert and instead of being open, it is still white plastic and then you can plug in your iPhone with a case on and it will still seat itself and charge and play. You just can't hammer on it too hard since it doesn't have full support. That is if your case maker doesn't make a universal adapter.

hm gonna see what adapter will work with the case-mate ID case.

iphone video 60gb adapter works great. the remote is amazing btw. :p

I was able to get an apple dock, but I am wondering if there are different iteration of the dock and if they all work with iPhone 4.

I do know that I need to buy the iPhone 4 adapters, but want to make sure all iterations of the dock work with the phone before i open it.

I am happy other people were able to catch the deal as well.
I still wonder why they have makred them so cheap when they are still selling for 50 everywhere else

Apple Dock on hold at radio shack!

I just called my local Shack and they have 2 left at $19.99 each. I asked that they put 1 on hold me for to pick up in the next hour or so and they will. Thanks to the OP for this sweet find. I have been wanting to get a dock for a while but haven't pulled the trigger and such a high price tag of $50. Now this is a no brainer when you also get a remote with it.

Thanks!

what's the point to the dock anyway?

Lots of reasons I wanted one.
You can plug speakers into the back so that you can just dock your phone and listen to music.
The remote is great for switching tracks and adjusting volume.
I think it looks nicer to have it sitting in a dock than just lying around. I also am hoping that this will prolong the life of my sycning cable. (they always break in the same damn spot).

The remote works with an iP4?

Edit: Looks like it does... But I'm still unclear after looking at Apple's website; what cables this comes with for connectivity/charging?

For some reason the radioshacks in my town says they don't even think they carry it, and it isn't on radioshack.com.. Anyone have any ideas why?

It does not come with a cable. It comes with the Dock, a Remote, and some inserts (iPhone 4 insert is not included).

The reps at your RadioShack are probably idiots and are too lazy to look the product up in their computer. This sale is an in-store clearance sale so it won't show up on their website. If your local RS has some, then they should be on clearance there. If they don't have any then you're out of luck.
