Apple Donates $8 Million to Chinese Earthquake Victims

It doesn't matter if it's 8 million or 8 billion. None will reach the victims.

Hong Kong citizens don't oppose the donation of HK$100 million for no reasons. Read the news after Wednesday.

And how exactly you know this 100% sure, what if Apple sends their own people with goods to take care of people!

As for Apple, Good job.

Hong Kong citizens have donated over 10 billion HKD (1.25 billion USD) last time (the more serious SiChuan earthquake in 2008). Journalists have since found out how large amount of money ended up in the officials pockets.

If Apple really send people to help out in Sichuan then good on them. Or better yet deliver food and water to the victims.

Of coz it's a good gesture to donate. I just doubt the helpfulness. Pardon me for being so negative.

Yeah. When people compete on generosity, everyone loses.

wait a minute...

That's not the way I meant it.

And X company giving more than Y company just to look better than the other one does not mean anything.

If they can, they should just give as much as possible without looking at their competitor's action.

Note I didn't name Apple or Samsung or whatever, I'm just speaking in general.

I'd like a pony, too. :p

I guess I'm focusing on more attainable goals. If getting companies into a PR pissing match with each other is what it takes to get them to help those in need I have no qualms about it.

I think it would be really great if car companies worked to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles because they care about the environment.

Yes of course, you had drinks with Tim yesterday and today you were having lunch with Jon Ivy and both of them told you they don't care about people at all.

You on the other hand, you donated half your paycheck on Friday, volunteered at the soup kitchen last night, and posted this from your iPhone while building a habitat for humanity.

Aren't you awsome and everyone else is evil

I think you didn't read my comment thoroughly or simply didn't understand it. I'll say it again, but this time, I'll try and use small words so you don't lose your way...

To say that Apple giving millions to help earthquake victims is simply good PR is tantamount to saying that the heads of Apple are soul-less people who don't care about anyone. And I think that's crap.

From the Gates Foundation site:

"Along with Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett is a foundation trustee, helping to shape our vision and develop strategies to address some of the world's most challenging inequities.

Buffett is a U.S. businessman and philanthropist. As chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc ., he has invested in a broad range of companies, from See's Candies to Geico Insurance to Fruit of the Loom.

In 2006, Buffett pledged most of his fortune to the Gates Foundation and to four charitable trusts created by his family—the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Susan A. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation (led by Peter A. Buffett). His gift to the Gates Foundation of 10 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock, to be paid in annual installments, was worth approximately $31 billion in 2006."

Gates is the wealthiest man in the world for 2013, and Buffet did stipulate that his annual contribution had to be matched by the Gates Foundation, but Buffett's huge infusion cannot be ignored. I watched Bill and Melinda Gates being interviewed along with Buffett on Charlie Roses's program back in 2006. Buffett said he had the cash for philanthropy, but that Gates was better at dispensing it. Buffet intends to leave most of his money to charitable organizations, and Gates has stated he intends to do the same. Noble gestures from the wealthiest men in the world, but they're still rolling in cash. To be fair, there are some miserly billionaires, so I certainly respect the efforts of these men and others who are willing to invest large portions of their fortunes to charitable work. The Gates Foundation has been criticized for some of its practices, but that's another story.
