Following a devastating earthquake that struck in Sichuan, China over the weekend, Apple has donated 50 million RMB or approximately $8 million to affected victims.

I think that is a wonderful thing that Apple did.

My guess is that they will be repaid many, many times over in many, many ways.

....
but i have to admit that Apple also donated money when an earthquake struck Japan
I seem to recall that they also made their stores available as communications centres. After getting their stores back onto the internet system people could show up and use the computers to contact family and loved ones, and catch up on the news. That the stores were kept open all night in some places for people to use the computers.
but on the other hand, why not doing something in compassion with Boston ?
Because Boston was a criminal act and not a natural disaster? Because as tragic as the Boston bombing was, it pales in comparison to what happens every day in the US? (On the day of the bombing in which 3 people died in Boston, 11 people were murdered with guns in the US) and no one was made homeless in Boston.
sure, charity is not a competition, and there should be no jalousy, but still, we can believe that Apple's gesture toward China is not purely innocent...
All corporate charity needs to be seen with a bit of cynicism, I believe.

Awesome for Apple to help like that! I wonder what they are doing for the victims here in the US? Like the survivors of the Boston bomb or the fertilizer explosion in west Texas?

See above....

Tell that the parents of the dead child.

Gary Grumbler
Wheezy Word Mumbler
Was never pleased with the world as it was.
When the sun shone bright
He whined, its too hot
When the clouds rained down
He griped, it should stop
When something was great
He said it could’ve been better
When a red balloon flew by
He said it could have been redder
If pancakes were served he wanted waffles
If pizza was ordered he’d demand nachos
For Gary Grumbler Wheezy Word Mumbler
The world was not as it ought
And so…..Miserable and grouchy
Were what he was a lot

Good on Apple

It's good when corporations donate to people who have lost their homes, their businesses, their schools, their infrastructure, and yes, the lives of family members. The people in the Longmenshan (Dragon's Gate Mountains) have suffered major loss to earthquake in the last 5 years. And it is not just the 2 earthquakes: there are the landslides and floods that follow the quakes. Samsung donated too, in fact more than Apple. Other international and Chinese national companies are donating as well.

It is humanitarian tradition that makes people and corporations donate. I can think of no reason to sarcastically slag those who donate.

good gesture yes, but wth?? they donate more oversees than to domestic causes? its their money to do with as they wish, but really... smh...

Sorry to be a realist, but they're developing those markets and this is a headline grabbing good thing, that will have much more impact than an equivalently priced ad campaign.

Edit: still I'd rather their good press be attained by helping those in genuine need rather than by lining the pockets of ad execs.

Just a boring editorial note: The casualties are over 10,000. (Casualty is not synonymous with fatality/death.)

Samsung donated 60 million RMB

I want to remind that Samsung donated 60 million RMB, 10 million more than Apple.

I remember reading a something a while back saying Steve Jobs had a huge problem with donating to any charity or cause. It's a good thing, but I just remember that because he had such a problem with the (Red) products... but he gave in and did it anyway. Does anyone else remember this? I believe it was posted here on MacRumors?
