I was referring to the other bits. Let's reflect on those bits for a while, shall we?

I don't think anyone alive here is responsible for slavery.

Anyway this is a thread mostly about the US which is one hell of a glass house to go chucking stones around in when it comes to the topic of slavery.

I still can't believe that it’s all adults behind these posts.
yup.
Facebook has successfully and systematically dismantled the critical thinking skills of the average individual. It’s … spectacular.

#GrandpaStoryTime: I remember when “The Internet” was touted as a paragon of connectivity that would bring us all together for the first time and allow the collective sharing of knowledge for the betterment of humanity. It was an idyllic future we all imagined and we believed it to our souls.
Yyyyyyyeah.. we didn’t see this coming.

Where do you think the idea of slavery came from in the US? It certainly wasn't invented here. And you were the one casting stones. Better move out of your glass house before continuing on. I suppose you don't want to discuss those other bits then. I figured.

Right, but many people alive are responsible for the new fascism and the slow death of democracy. And they are very proud of it. And very vocal about it.

Do you know the song ?
Sooner or later just like the world first day
Sooner or later we learn to throw the past away
History will teach us nothing

So so bored of this type of story in the news, particularly here in the UK where it feels like US politics stories are dominating over our own. I’m no Trump fan at all but this ballroom thing is so far down the list of important issues in the world today, I’m genuinely baffled as to why I’ve even been made aware of it.

Technically it was the Portugese and Spanish who delivered them to us in Virginia to start with...

Also I believe we stopped doing it first too.

100% agree.

They are however not the majority, just vocal. It is our duty as rational folk to speak louder and in greater numbers.

The story is about the sad fact that this grotesque ballroom will be paid by Apple and others.

I'm surprised you are bored by this type of story. The UK is a world hub for tabloid BS and gossips about kings and queens.
As far as I'm concerned, I think that the fact that Apple has become an accomplice and sponsor of King Donald should be in heavily publicized.
I will remember this, Mr Cook!

in the end, money talks, bs walks. realize that nobody cares about your feelings, or what you think. people who are upset over apple siding with those who they may not agree with are in the minority. even people who are telling you to "resist" don't really believe in or care about their message. they are getting paid to spread it, that's it. in reality, most of these rich people and companies are friends behind closed doors, while those upset are being played for a fool. george carlin was right about being in the big club. they sling dirt at each other on tv for show, but when they're out and about, they're all smiles and laughter.

Right, but in this system you don't need a "majority" to win an election.
The country can and will be disrupted by this minority. This is how wars and civil wars start.
It's more than time to wake up...

Apple is one of several tech companies that will contribute to the construction of U.S. President Donald Trump's 90,000-square-foot ballroom, reports CNN.

trump-white-house-ballroom.jpg

Construction began on the ballroom this week, and the White House's east wing was torn down. Trump claims that the ballroom will cost $350 million, and that it will be privately funded through donations. The cost has already increased $150 million over the figures that Trump previously quoted.

Other tech companies that have donated to the ballroom construction include Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and HP.

There is no word on the specific amount that Apple donated toward the project.

Update: The total ballroom cost has been updated to $350 million, after Trump announced new pricing on Thursday evening.

I’ll keep my M1 Mac and pass on the M5 upgrade this year. And maybe next year.

The leadership in this nation seems very determined to create civil warfare. Slashing funding to only Democrat areas, taking voting rights away from Democrats, putting heavily armed thugs in our cities… they are trying to start an armed war, probably to consolidate power.

Yeah. Voter education is the first step. Then push for voter reforms.

Their are more guns and riffles than people in this country... King Donald did not invent hate and violence, he's just taking advantage of the stupidity of locals. Americans hate each other and they just need an order from their kinglet to pull the trigger.
Again, you reap what you sow.

It was all privately funded so it’s not costing the tax payer a dime.
A 90,000-square-foot building with luxury amenities costs millions to maintain each year. Caretakers, cleaners, technicians, and heating costs. The events are becoming more frequent and larger, and taxpayers will foot the bill.

The main thing is that Trump has created a monument to himself; this ballroom will, of course, bear his name.

Just for your information, the Executive Residence costs $15 million a year, and the ballroom will add a few million to that.

From an apolitical view:
Barack Obama had a large reception at the White House and they had to use tents on the lawn.

Aside from being a security nightmare, having a ballroom replacing structure built in 1902 (upgraded in 1945) is less of a "he's shredding all things American" and more of an "OK, I guess we needed this. I (pick one: do/don't) like the guy, but he knows how to build things. I (pick one: love/hate) that they're using private funds." We still talk to the British and they burned the actual White House down in 1814.

I guess we can do mad libs with this, but there are a lot more things to get offended over, if that's your thing. If your Rage-o-matic trigger is set on anything the current president does, it's going to be a long 1,184 days for you.

I think if there is going to be renovation or construction of a government building, it should be funded by taxpayers rather than a privileged few.

To me, private funding suggests that our government is only available to those that can afford it rather than everyone. It suggests that the privileged few decide the direction of the country (which they already do in so many ways). It’s just another thing that they had a seat at the table in deciding. I guess that’s just an average day in the USA, the people with the gold making the rules.

Woah. Quick skim through these comments and given I'm not American I think I will eave this discussion to you guys.

As a parting comment though:

It's pretty disappointing, as freedom loving European whose recent ancestors fought fascism on our continent (after it had been waved in by Europe's corporate and wealth class in the 30s), see US corporates and Silicon Valley VSs bend the knee so cravenly to an increasingly autocratic Trump. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is asking "would technology controlled by an human-rights-abusing autocratic China really be any worse than technology controlled by a human-rights-abusing autocratic US" (especially given the way that the US has been abusive towards its historical allies and cosying up to fascists and dictators). The image damage to Apple will be pretty minimal so long as it's only vanity projects like this; hopefully Apple's leadership can continue to triangulate effectively.

From our perspective, allowing our tech crow jewels to wither or be acquired was a huge strategic error.
