Lame. I really saw it as a good way to pave way for interactions when the screen is covered in water.

I bought a Series 5 about a month before things shut down, just in time to be home working on my Mac all day. I’m only getting even more regretful of that purchase.

I like force touch. But removing it will just result in a fraction of a mm being removed. That’s not enough to make more than a few percent difference in battery capacity. No real difference. If they increase battery size it will be because they’ve done other things.

Ugh Apple. This has definitely been my least favourite WWDC ever.

I use force touch all the time on my watch. How are we going to start new messages in mail, messages etc without force touch? Or change watch faces in a pinch?

1. Buy a new Apple Watch and put up with the new way of using it (initial bad experience might colour their use and opinion of Apple as it is already)

You've actually reinforced my point with your option 1

2. Find a watch from a different company that works for them; or 3. Don't buy a new watch at all. In two thirds of those choices, Apple loses a customer.

2 is an option, which is not feasible for (I'm assuming) most of us here. At least not for me as you can see for my signature and I'm sure many are in the same situation. 3 is a very valid option - but you miss out on all the rest that a Watch has to offer, and it is likely this is worse than "just" losing a feature (albeit a big one).

Bottom line is we will have to put up with this if this is what they want and we wish to remain within their ecosystem

I see it the opposite way, lucky you - you can put off updates (at least hardware updates) longer than me 😅

STOP taking away features I paid for already from devices I already own! First the iphone X got rid of this feature while the hardware still exists, now with WOS7 on my AW5!

Almost certainly because it's a lot easier to crack the screen of the watch than people realise. It looks solid enough but you can't know how solid until you break it. If, like me, you've ever had the misfortune to break one then you'll see that the screen is eggshell thin.

It is significantly more fragile than the crystal cover on most watches. And, because it's an integral part of the watch and not just a protective cover, a lot more expensive to replace.

I love opinion pieces passed off as facts.

Here's what I'm curious about. How many people posting in this thread have actually installed watchOS 7 and tried it out? From what I can tell it's just one, maybe two people. Here's a thought, let's give Apple more than 1 day to sort things out and see what happens.

Force Touch used in the Weather app on watchOS 6

It's always been a useless feature in the above example. I can tap two times faster to cycle through the other two options (or only once if that's where I'm going), instead, I have to hold down longer and then move my finger and pick one.

Even if you start at your menu of cities, it's still faster to tap three times (and that's assuming you want %rain, the other options are less taps).

Well this isn’t even a switch to Haptic Touch! You’ll have to go to Settings to change views in Calendar. Crazy!
Yes but that’s because Apple have chosen (for some reason) not to use long-touch there (which is an almost identical interaction - I always found you had to hold a force-touch for a while anyway). They could have. Weird that they didn’t.

Someone said earlier that this probably means they’ll switch the magic trackpad back to mechanical button soon, and then cited the mechanical one in the magic keyboard for iPad Pro as further evidence. I thought at first that this is nonsense, there’s no way they’d go back to mechanical, the iPad one is probably just mechanical for thinness, but then I thought is a button really thinner than the force sensing hardware? Anybody know?

I’m confused. I’m running watchOS 7 beta on my series 4. On a watch face I now just tab and hold and I get into the face customisation (haptic touch) as opposed to pressing hard (force touch). Seems no functionality has been removed just now haptic as opposed to force.

They’d better not get rid of the force touch trackpad for Macs. I recently tried using the new iPad Pro’s magic keyboard and trackpad, and my first thought when I used the trackpad was “yuck!”

It requires more effort to use and its click feels like a cheap windows laptop. The force touch trackpad on the other hand is the most refined I’ve ever used; I’d rather use it than any other pointing device.

I'm surprised because on a small screen it adds a layer of interaction that's helpful. Maybe they decided a long press achieves the same result and it's not worth having a dedicated piece of hardware inside the device 🤷🏻‍♂️
