Sonos is supposed to be better. It costs way more. If your're kiting your house out in Sonos, the price wasn't keeping you away from the HomePad anyway. (e.g. if the HomePod was $100, you wouldn't have it instead of the Sonos.)
The Sonos One is less expensive than the HomePod.

Unless the offer a stripped down version in the range of $129, they will never have a huge percent of market share.

Not everyone cares for premium audio. Especially when junk/generic music tops the charts.
Apple is not going to complete for profitless market share either.

Most similar speakers (Bose / Sonos) are around the same price. It's not really priced all that high compared to the competition.

Sonos speakers are 199$ and the Bose one is nothing I would consider a breakthrough sales wise.

I think it’s a nice-sounding (and nice-looking) speaker that is horendously and needlessly hobbled by Apple’s ridiculous limitations. But a lower price is good for eveyone who wants to buy one (or another one).

You know it’s bad when Apple lowers the price of a current generation device.
Like when the iPhone SE dropped from $399 to $349 in September 2017, after about 18 months?

They’ve sold probably 5 million; component costs have come down with economies of scale. $50 will stimulate few extra sales, but since they can do it without compromising their desired margin, why not?

I saw $299 on their site, but yea I see some spots offering for $199. I don't consider $100 all that different either way though. $200-$300 speakers are in the same class to me. Too often, people compare to Amazon and Google speakers though, which really aren't in the same category.

Yeah, $350 was not a high price for a high-quality compact speaker, regardless of whether it contained an on-board SoC, voice assistant, or could connect to the internet. People don't seem to have much perspective on what audio equipment has traditionally cost. Boomboxes that could only play radio and cassettes sold for $350 and above 30 years ago. We're living in a golden age of incredibly cheap electronics and people spend all their time complaining about price.

Yea I mean, it's definitely not cheap, but I don't think it's too crazy for what you get. People generally say why would I buy a HomePod when I can get a Google mini for $50? It's just kind of a silly comparison.

So for me, Apple will realise that for the future they have to keep future Homepod products respectively priced or instead they will throw their toys out of their pram and abandon the smart speaker market.
With discounting in China and India of the XR's, perhaps, they are finally starting to learn that they cant keep charging extortionate prices for everything they produce.

It’s still rare, especially for a company know to have high margins and not known for having “discounts”. It’s why they are known to be a “premium” brand.

Uhm, ok. We definitely seem to have a different look on things here.

Makes sense. Yea I don't really look at $100 in either direction as a major swing for me. I looked at features and what I wanted from a speaker and decided the HomePod was best for me. I've been really happy with both of mine.

A smart-speaker just doesn't engender the same personal, emotional attachment as a smartphone. It is difficult for Apple to charge the same premium for a device that just sits on a shelf.

I believe Apple will run into the same issue with services. This is particularly true when you are running transactional based services which is what Apple is currently selling. This is why Apple wants to move into content creation so bad.

Apple really loves its users.

After all those reports we had a few months ago explaining how HomePod was being sold al loss (some malevolent people saying that was BS to make people swallow the price) Aplle sells it even lower with a greater loss.

If you want plastic junk with below average sound quality, get an echo or a google.

[doublepost=1554383674][/doublepost]It’s a high quality premium speaker. Want to link to a high quality speaker that does what this does at a cheaper price?

lol let me guess, you bought one at full Apple retail?

A lot of people saying no thanks, but this is hands down my favorite speaker that I own. Of the Cambridge Audio Yo-Yo small, Sonos One and HomePod - The HomePod Blows the other two away with ease. I bought it at full launch price and will certainly get another for this reduced price, I like it that much.

Nope, got it for $275 at Best Buy. A steal, at that price.

But why don’t you give the model and brand of a comparable smart speaker that does what the HomePod does? I’ll wait.

I still cannot believe how a single speaker can cost $300-$350 when the google home mini is like $50. I am well aware the Homepod is way better, but I would really prefer a modular speaker system that I can arrange to achieve real surround sound for like $100 each. And still that would be a lot.

It’s not a discount. They changed the price.

A discount is “get $50 off, limited time only!”

Apple did a great job with audio quality on this speaker, based on this alone, apple had a chance to make lot more money by selling them for less and having much higher market share. But they missed the boat. Currently both google and amazon offers cheap smart speakers which connects to audio systems, it offer best of both, smart feature and good audio. Most people who value quality sound already have audio setup. I am sure, as the price of processing power goes down, competition will come out with similar audio quality speaker to apple at lower price for those who lack the space for real audio setup or have not invested in it. Apple did not cash in on the head start they had. Now a days, many people are looking what they can control with their smart speaker, how well it integrates with other devices. People are spending lot of money on headphones for audio needs.
