#triggered. Never used that, but damn this post is ultimate absurdity. jozero was simply arguing that Tim Cook is not the new Steve Ballmer and you went all personal and insulted his intelligence. Damn... relax it's just a laptop.

Then again, you joined yesterday, so you're probably just here to troll.

So you're advocating giving commentary on a comparison without bothering to do the basic reading of the actual comparison and you're calling me the troll? That really is absurd isn't it. #uninformedopinions

Wow. Apple is willing to eat up that much loss? Really NO ONE must be ordering the LG monitors...
They missed an opportunity here. The appeal of the thunderbolt display was that it served as a hub for your legacy devices (ethernet, USB-A) in addition to being a kickass IPS WQHD panel. These new LG models would've sold like hotcakes had they retained at least some of the legacy connections in addition to USB-C.

Apple would've already set terms on the wholesale price with LG, so Apple would take the hit. Margins on the 21.5 will likely be lower than those on the 5K. Given the availability of alternative 4K displays, I'm actually surprised 4K was a focus for Apple.

It just shows Apple HW design has lost its way.

I find 4k monitors of questionable value. Its nice the Apple / LG monstrosity is 3:2 but still, look at the resolution.

It is 4096x2304, which effectively is : 2048 x 1152

As a comparison the 15" Macbook Pro effective recommended resolution is : 1920 by 1200
The 13" : 1680 x 1050

Its nice to have a second monitor but the 4K is barely bigger than the screens in the macbook. Compare this the 5k, which feels like a true 27" no-retina external monitor. Its effective resolution is : 2560x1440. Now that feels like a gain in screen real estate.

I *did* read the article you posted before commenting, which was titled "Tim Cook is the New Steve Ballmer", which surprisingly argued that Tim Cook is the New Steve Ballmer, which clearly argued that "The problem was that Ballmer organized the company around execution of its CURRENT STRENGTHS", and you said "I simply agree with the article". The article also states "risk is the nature of new ventures and innovation is why they exist". And your entire argument was Tim Cook CHANGED TOO MUCH STUFF so he is out of touch with the average user.

Instead of discussing what I said, you assumed I didn't read the article and instead weakly tried attacking the person. Just a tip, that usually means you have no real argument, you just get written off as not worth listening to. If you have a real response to what I posted, backed up by the article that YOU posted, which also actually makes some relative sense, there is likely a better forum thread for it. We can talk there.

I don't see why anyone would be excited about this "deal". You can buy comparable monitors that are not crippled (i.e. have standard video inputs in addition to the still exotic USB-C) for less money, including LG models. The original price was just ridiculous.
Can you point me few 5k models with wide gamut, standard ports and about same price? I'd like to buy one...

Next up Macs made by someone else - LG, Samsung, HP, Dell all making laptops running macOS and XCode for you to develop and maintain iOS apps.
Can't wait for that! A mac with features built in! Not hanging from the dongles!

These were made for the Macs only.
So the display does not have standard tb3 connections that many pc's have had before macs?

I went with the LG 38UC99.

"not even their product."
So we know Apple "worked closely" with LG so that the monitor would work seemlessly with Apple's new Laptops.
We know Apple dropped the price.
Who set the initial price?
LG Or Apple?
If LG then how does Apple set a new lower price for another company's monitor?
If Apple, then how is it "not even their product."?
If Apple is just lowering the price per unit then Apple is taking the hit for every monitor sold.
How is that not affecting their bottom line?
Finally, you did get one thing correct, no one wants Apple's dongles, though everyone buying those new laptops has to buy them if they want to connect to:
Ethernet, USB printer, their iPhone, digital camera, external hard drive, a projector, a tv, their preferred wired mouse, etc.
Apple sells hundreds of 3rd part products in their stores. If there's no Apple logo on it, it's not there product and thus is treated a lot different. I don't know their bottom line on this monitor but they probably marked it up as if it had an Apple logo to see what happens. Since they didn't take the full hit on R&D alone, they can drop it and make LG look like the commodity monitor maker without sacrificing the Apple brand value or profits.

Before the 2012 retina MBP(which people complained to no end about when it was released), the previous MBP was 2008 (4 years earlier, same time difference as this cycle), which people also viciously complained about when it was announced.

2012

2008

Nvertheless, 15" mbp's price is now at all-time-high. Which, in this situation of global economy, is pretty bold and blind.

damn! 2016! i timed that badly :D

Haha, don't worry, I just bought 2 last week. Fact is there is no other display on the market at the moment that match up. Personally I'm a fan of the styling, and the quality is just wonderful! LG have their 5K ultra wide, which does also seem nice, but I prefer the standard ratio!
