I'm just bored with smartphones, across the spectrum. It's a mature market and picking out a new phone is about as exciting as picking out new tires.

This is exactly it. They all do the same thing. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S24 alongside my iPhone 15 Pro Max...I played with it for about a week, and it was very nice....but then after a week I realize I was doing the same things with it that I did on my iPhone lol. They all do the same things! So I just returned it and kept the iPhone 15 Pro Max since that is what I am already used to. The S24 Ultra was very nice though....maybe one day I'll try Samsung again if Im not too lazy to switch everything again lol

This seems most logical to me, I tried out an iPhone 15 at an Apple Store and it was like using a ten year old phone but with a big screen. And they charge a premium for that! I pull my old beat up cheap Android phone out of my pocket, and it runs circles around this brand new iPhone 15, in every way.

So yea big surprise here..

People really have no idea. I mean once you’re used to fast charging. Proper fast charging above 50w I mean… and you just can’t go back. And that’s just one of the many many things that Apple refuses to keep up with the rest of the world.

Time for stock price manipulation. Put out a negative report about Apple in China - did we not learn ANYTHING from the fake "apple is doomed in China" from early this year? Drop the stock a few dollars, and reap millions.

Mainland China has so many restrictions right now that Apple Phones became extreme burden to use. By law any person working for the State (which is... everyone) is not allowed to own non-Chinese CCP locked devices. Adolf Xi put pedal to the metal when it comes to repressions post-Covid. There's simply no air left. Grand Moff Tarkin learned that lesson already. CCP will learn it one day.

Really I don't get it what Apple plan is to achieve anything when hostile State is openly working to discourage purchase of Fruity Devices.

Almost 14 years since I last bought a Mac.
6 years since I last bought an iPhone.
3 years since I last bought an iPad.

I don't need or want a new Mac, but I'd be interested in a new iPhone and iPad. Except... you used to get value for your money even with the base product. Nowadays you don't, so I'm not buying anymore. I'm not interested in the expensive "pro" crap, but I'm also not interested in the recycled multiple year old chips etc in the base iPhone/iPad.
I want the latest chips in the base products like the good old days, then I'd buy.

I know people like to say that the reason the iPhone isn't doing as well in China is due to politics, but I think it's more that Chinese phone manufacturers are trying all sorts of new and interesting things and pushing the boundaries of mobile technology...

...and meanwhile, Apple is set to release the iPhone 12SSSS this year. :p
Exactly this. Why buy a new iPhone when you can’t even tell if it’s an iPhone 12 or 16. Other than that the Chinese competition first copied Apple and now are leapfrogging them. Apple is a one trick pony and needs to learn new tricks soon to survive. If there wasn’t a ban on some Chinese brands Apple would lose even more market share.

The signal-to-noise ratio in this thread is pretty bad. From the usual comments that are being repeated for years now to the comments from people who allegedly don't patronize Apple products anymore, but still find time to trash them here, there's not much value in this thread.

For the last two years I took a poll in class with my Chinese college students in China about who has what brand of phone and iPhone won in every single class with about a third to a half of students having one, and then with Xiaomi in second in most classes but not always, and most of the rest lumped together in the rankings. I had expected Huawei to do better from all of its seemingly nationalistic branding, since whenever I ask someone why they have a Huawei phone they say patriotism (but then don’t say anything when I say why not Xiaomi or Oppo then).

Samsung meanwhile, the only other foreign brand present usually has at most 1 student per class with one. (The classes have around 25-30 people)

I expect the results difference from this news and other recent news is due to age or class or some strange other factor. These students are neither especially wealthy nor especially poor.
With Huawei at least, my theory is that it is too expensive for not being an iPhone and that it is more popular with old people who fall for their nationalistic branding which manages to make Huawei the nationalistic phone of choice despite all the other Chinese brands (including xiaomi, which I find to be a much more respectable brand).

Absolutely, and that used to be a thing here as well. Now, Americans often claim they want products produced domestically and cite faux patriotism, but that evaporates once something costs about 8 cents more than any alternative.

Citation: the sock drawer, closets, and desks of literally anyone in the USA.
If Apple products were compelling for the Chinese, they wouldn’t rank sixth place now. Chinese people are far more technology and specification driven. They want the latest and the greatest and there are many brands delivering that. Other Asian countries will soon follow. Mark my words on that.

Apple is doing heavy discount in its wholesale channel in China for a long while. To the point I have been saying the other part of the world's pricing is subsidising iPhone in China.

The other point is that Apple's hardware, apart from its SoC is simply lacking behind some of the Chinese Android's brand.

The real reason is Apple is behind in most aspects in Smartphone market.

1. Poor displays (Dull colours and glare issues) People don't care about XDR and fancy terms.
2. Poor Battery life
3. Slow charging speed
4. No easy way to transfer downloaded random files from iPhone to PC/Mac
5. Basic cheap non-Pro models artificially limited to 60hz while $250 androids are pushing 120hz
6. Brand fatigue
7. Patriotism and feeling amongst Chinese that USA = Bad

These are in no particular order, right?

7 should be 1. That is the main reason above all.

2 is price. Apple are expensive and most Chinese citizens are farmers.

5 is just you stretching out point 1 to try and make a list and is just and adjunct to 2 (price per performance) so could be combined.

2 and 3 are not exactly true when performance is considered. My phone lasts nearly 2 days between charge.

4 might be an issue for you but considering most chinese people don't own a computer it's likely a "you" thing.

6 Brand fatique is bollocks. Chinese love their brands, Channel, Fendi, Gucci etc... But they are going through a massive anti Western(+Japan) Communist driven period in their history right now, so let's combine this with 7...

So let's recap.

6 and 7 are Patriotism -> 1 Not chinese.
1, 2, 3 and 5 -> 2. Price performance ratio.
4 -> Noone cares or just uses online fileshare.

Which brings us down to just two commandments:

1) iPhone is not Chinese.
2) It costs a royal fkuk ton for what is just a glorified phone.

i.e. cost and patriotism.....

China is retiring out. Consumption not what it was pre-2019.

Yes, consumer free capitial has tanked among the middile class, many of whom have lost an entire generation's worth of investment in property that will never actually get built. Makes our westerners' getting angry at pre-release games pale in comparison.

We cry about $100 pre-release games that are released in poor state while Chinese people are literally dying over pre-release apartments that cost $1,000,000 and are never even built.

Ya, this could not be more true. Seems like almost everyone in China uses wechat to transfer files or else some even more annoying online file sharing service. And usually just between phones since they don’t frequently use a laptop or desktop.

Sorry for three posts in a row...

You say these students are neither especially wealthy nor poor. That would be heavy selection bias at work. I presume you are in a city, not the deep countryside and I presume you are talking about people who are taking your class and that your are also presumably a foreigner. Thus you are actually talking to the top echelon of Chinese society.

the "neither especially wealthy" verdict would still have them in the top 5% of Chinese society, maybe even the top 1%.

I'm sure that most of the street vendors, farmers, drivers, family business owners use local brands.

Huawei products in past 12 months:

Mate 60 = World first smartphone with satellite SMS and voice calling

Pura 70 = Mechanical variable aperture with 1-inch sensor

Patriotism has little to do with the fact these are far superior phones. This is a pure technical advantage. The lack of foldables from Apple doesn’t help.

Patriotism or use of WeChat didn’t suddenly explode in the past 12 months.

Samsung is doing even worse than Apple, at 1%, because they aren't a Chinese company.
No, Samsung was because of the note7. Samsung refused to recall them in China, which was really bad PR.

It also comes with the fact that samsung are just expensive for what it is. The OS doesn’t have as much features as Chinese ones, and the hardware is lackluster compared to Chinese Androids.

After a while, Samsung gave up the market

The Chinese manufacturers are more willing to allow the Chinese government to install eavesdropping technology onto those devices. Apple devices are so well locked down most law-enforcement agencies cannot break into them.
Yeah, definitely. The Chinese phones are selling better because consumers want to be monitored by the gov

Even Apple fans like myself in the US are experiencing Apple fatigue. I've recently found myself many times wondering about alternative options for both tablets and phones. I never experienced those thoughts a few years ago.

Something seems stale and tired with Apple these days...
Same. I really want a fold.. or a good 2 in 1, or something exciting

On the individual level, there is an argument that pride should be reserved for something that you achieve by your own actions, not for an accident of birth (or naturalization).

You might want to check out the definitions of the word.

While the primary definition tends to list personal accomplishment, the second almost universally lists "association" therefore one can certainly, on an individual level, take pride in their neighborhood, town, region, state, country, or even continent.

Attempting to limit the definition seems like you have an agenda.

Please explain how one's birth is an accident? One's conception might have been an accident, but the birthing process just happens. You are born where you are born, I am fairly sure no one was born somewhere by accident. "Oooops, I stepped over the border and my baby just fell out accidentally", preposterous. I am very sure instances like that are very much intentional and not accidental.

Sigh I’m using an iPhone. The home bar takes several seconds to fade out. Maybe it’s not an issue for you but it bugs me. It’s also completely useless zero reason to exist.
It makes perfect sense the way it is implemented, and it has every reason to exist as part of the user interface.

90% of people charge their phone overnight. No one cares how fast it charges. The speed of 15W charging is more than fast enough for the people not responsible enough to charge when they should, or with habits horrible enough to drain their battery at inconvenient times.

Compared to local brands iPhones are overpriced and offer little extra.

The days of western brands enjoying massive halo effects are numbered and for some, already gone.
