god forbid if we ever need this generation to fight a war for our freedom. they'll cry that they can't work at home in their underwear
Wars are already fought from home... underwear optional. Good internet connection required with low latency for that remote drone loaded with bombs. ;)

people have already stood up for employee rights and still do, they are called labor unions...so showing up to the office is now right wing BS? I'm guessing with your attitude , you are stuffing chalupas at TB or disgruntled that your republican governor has taken away your UE benefits and told you to get to work
Yes, demanding that people show up to the office is retrograde stupidity. I was hoping that over a year of pandemic has taught people that responsible adults can work remotely and be more productive. Problem is, corporations won't need so many middle managers if people were to work from home. So, the middle managers are going to be dragging people to the offices just to justify their own existence and keep their own jobs. It's pathetic.

Indeed, that’s probably true for some people at home as well. Then again, I usually assume people have fun doing their job.

No you would not, believe me, you would not. At least not after a year or two.
LOL agreed. Little does he know. Hmmmm but then why do they call it a job? 😉

I manage a team that works from home, and have tools that allow me to see their activity. Two words. Work avoidance. I get much less done because now I have to be a cop. So ridiculous.
Just honestly curious, not as an offense: did you have those tools before, as a prior metric for comparison? Will you have those tools later, too, when people are back? Those would be interesting comparisons and contrasts.

There's a big difference between being a teacher and being an engineer. Teachers need to return to schools. Engineers don't have to be in a noisy office to be able to be productive.
Yes, but it poor design if the office is noisy. I'm sure Apple Park is quiet and still. 😉

You call being made to drive 1.5 hours to the office freedom? You have a perverted idea of freedom. Most professionals who work in offices are able to work from home with more productivity. If you can't, then drag your arse to the office.

Productivity goes up because when you finish your work from home, you have options other than staring at a fluorescent light and watching the clock.

#1 More sleep.
#2 Less travel.
#3 Save Money
#4 Fresh Food - Control the fridge
#5 Control the thermostat (comfort)
#6 Control the hygiene (no public restroom).

Not to mention I have been such a big part of my 3 small kids lives. I can flex out and drive one to ABA therapy, or another to speech therapy. Help with home schooling. My cell phone is on me and the e-mails will be there in 15 minutes when I get back. I can have lunch with my family daily. I have lost weight, lowered blood pressure. It took us 6 months, but my government agency absolutely perfected working from home. We've done it all from hire to retire, train to discipline.

It's like a dystopian future thinking about 5:30-6:00a.m. alarm clocks. That means earlier bed time, more caffeine needed. 2 hours in the car. Gas is $4 a gallon. Oh man, need to iron the work clothes. That takes time too. If it can be done remotely by any means, that should be the default. It should need to be absolutely verifiably essential to make someone risk their lives on the interstate for the privilege of an office full of random interruptions.
It seems government agencies are better at visualizing the future than commercial enterprises. BTW you are wrong about needing gas. You won't be soon able to buy a gas car.

I believe Google, Microsoft, AWS all are remote till next year. If your in an office space working on remote app's I don't see a reason for bringing people back in. Look at gas prices, people are not going back to work because the government hasn't stopped unemployment being extended. This is far from being over. Not being negative but just have that feeling that COVID or a strain of it is going to be back in the fall. Hopefully NOT.

Old-ass people with their old ways of doing things. “If I can’t see you working, then you aren’t working.”

I’m blessed my company is sticking to a remote-first model, with options for those who want to work in their local office.

I don't know what you are trying to convey here.

Having worked in what you would call probably call demanding fields (oil fields, nuclear ships, power generation), I can speak from experience that office jobs can be more demanding than "field" jobs, especially mentally

At any rate, I would not expect working at Apple to be fun and games. It is probably very demanding with a lot of politics you have to play while being surrounded by unbelievably smart people all trying to one up each other. No thanks
I think you captured that very well. Working at Apple and a nurse on a COVID ward are both demanding jobs, just in different ways. Thankfully we have people who want to do both jobs.

that sounds like a poor personal decision if one is driving 1.5 hrs to the office. 🤷‍♂️

Lol comparing working at Apple to a field where decisions could cost lives. I guess demanding is all relative.

Yes, most people who make a cut to work at Apple absolutely are able to work from home independently. They hire pretty talented people. Those who advocate for everyone to report to the office are losers who have no discipline to work independently.

I’m not saying everyone can work from home. Obviously, teachers, doctors, grocery workers, automotive technicians, and hundreds of other occupations can’t work from home. However, engineers, computer programmers, etc. can and should be given an option to work from home with occasional visits to the office. Maybe once or twice a month. The companies who still don’t get it even after the pandemic will be losing their best talent, and they won’t even know what hit them.
It really depends on the engineering job. As someone said earlier, a systems engineer in aerospace cannot in most cases. It's hard to take a Saturn 5B rocket home to work on the systems problem. 🤣

He is right, you do have a slave mindset.

Also, LOL at all the people who trusted HR and believed they would be able to work from home when this all ended.
Thank of the ones who sold houses and moved. What are they going to do now?

If I am a competing company, I am taking note and will offer more time working from home, even up to permanently. Once a lot of talent leaves Apple because of this reason, only then will they then be forced to change their policy.
I think that Apple probably gets and retains a lot of great talent because of how their products positively affect the world and so many of those in it. Not because they're okay with people having a ten second commute in their PJs.

Stupid traffic is going to be a mess a few months from now. Now I know which days I should avoid driving…Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
And Wednesdays and Fridays for those who will be working those two days. 🤣

Yup, it's going to be a mess again.
