That's my guess. I've never had a problem buying an iPhone device-only. I don't look like a scalper, and I do look like someone who knows the drill.

I suspect they were all tired of seeing the OP in line again at that particular store.

Does anyone give a ****? The OP is the guy making it more difficult for all the honest people on here trying to get their hand on a 5s.

I smiled at him with a killer grin, and said I wasn't looking for unlocked, but for"Device Only" :D

He took a gulp and looked nervous when i said that ..

Why do I not believe a word of this. Like any Apple employee cares whether you use the phrase "device only." Who are you, the Attorney General of the United States?

And with all this raw insight and unbridled talent, you . . . flip gold iPhones on Ebay/Craigslist.

You sure showed him. Perhaps you'll pat yourself on the back over another award winning post.

Apple employees are there cause of thier attitude, not for thier technical knowledge. Don't see a big issue if they have been told not to say unlocked , given that post launch a lot of scalpers are operating around apple stores, and it's the unlocked phones they want to sell on eBay.

Then you have not read what the OP posted.

They're probably saying that because I'm sure there's a ton of people trying to buy unlocked 5s iPhones and flip them on ebay/CL.

You're speculating. What people do with their purchases (after waiting in line or paying others to wait in line) is his/her own business ('as in scalping business'?)

who cares. let the scalpers have their fun like they did with beanie babies and power rangers or whathavenot.

Apple's job is to sell phones and treat customers with respect. If everyone wantd an unlocked phone, why not sell it to them?

Evil knows no bounds.

This might sound sensational, but I noticed something odd today with three different staff members repeating a certain statement, even when a customer never asked anything about the topic ....

I've been to the Apple store daily, and staff has definitely been briefed/ordered to say this ...

"Just to let you know, the no contract phones are locked to the carriers."

I walked in and asked if they had gold iPhones in stock (I check every hour, had been there first thing when they opened in the morning today, and back after 2 hours to check) and the guy at the front said the above statement to me unsolicited .... what does asking if they have gold iPhones available in-store have to do with the statement that phones bought are locked to carriers ...... which is a blatant lie anyway, and I am SURE they know it, and were directed to say it to possibly deter resellers who may think they're locked.

I smiled at him with a killer grin, and said I wasn't looking for unlocked, but for"Device Only" :D

He took a gulp and looked nervous when i said that .. they know we know full-priced AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile phones bought from Apple are unlocked, and are being told to LIE to consumers (who may not know) that devices are locked to carriers.

Isn't that ilegal ?

I heard another Apple guy say the exact same thing to another customer who asked to buy "unlocked ...... Apple sales people all look like little kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar, nervous looks on their faces when telling this lie (being forced to lie !)

You're not going to get much sympathy here Mr. Scalper.

OP are you trying to say that retail store employees are some sort of sheep? Hmm I'm not sure that's a new concept but you may be on to something.

I discern many things, I am a keen observer and study people and my surroundings.

Trust me when I say they are being told to say this, it's not a coincidence, or someone trying to be helpful.

Apple store reps are the stupidest sales people I have ever seen, I can't even begin how many Apple reps gave me erroneous information on almost any topicc, they are so ignorant , and act like members of a cult with a dearth of free thinking.

These are Apple salespeople in LA. I have no idea how they're hired, or how they're "trained", they're mostly robotic and give drilled answers and you'll find different salespeople in the same store giving contradictory answers on everything.

One says cash is not allowed. I smirk at her and tell her I don't believe that, bring a manager, she does. She insists she's right.Turns out she's wrong. Roll eyes.

They are soooooo stupid I'm left scratching my head. The criteria to be hired at an Apple store in LA is to wear skinny jeans, have a beard, ride a skateboard to work, and be a clueless, cult member.

I question your stories. You seem to make your stories more dramatic than what they really are. I don't work for Apple but i do have friends that do and their hiring process is pretty intense. The first interview is a group interview with about 30 people. Than you get 2 more interviews independently. Not sure how their training works but they are only human, they can't know everything.
I wouldn't be surprised if they are been told to say they don't sell unlocked phones, pretty sure they have thousands of customers a day asking the same question, it can get a bit annoying.

They get spiffed from contract sales. They're sales people remember. Plus lack of knowledge, I think we have all been in situations where we know more then the salesman probably more often then not.

I used to see threads on here all the time of people saying Verizon employees push Android phones more then Apple phones then an argument pursues. I always laughed because it was true, margins are higher on Android phones and back with the 4S, LTE phones got you better commission. So of course we pushed Android phones harder because it paid more. Don't you guys want to get paid more at work?

This is why you get so many contradicting answers. A sales persons personality and honesty effects answers. Don't worry about, do research and buy what you want the way you want and leave. Let them do their jobs and hope they are being as honest as possible.

(I check every hour, had been there first thing when they opened in the morning today, and back after 2 hours to check) ....I smiled at him with a killer grin...
He took a gulp and looked nervous when i said that ...

No, to me he sounds like a gunman in an italo-western:D

I wonder if the stores get bonuses for selling new contracts. That might be why they're saying that.

Are you trying to imply that wanting to buy an unlocked iPhone is somewhat dishonest? WTF?

THey're referring to the fact that OP has bought 21 gold iPhones to flip on eBay, thus contributing to the widespread scalping issue that's making it more difficult for those of us who want, um, ONE to use ourselves to actually obtain one.

The Tmobile/Verizon/AT&T iPhone 5S all work on the same bands lol. The Sprint one is nearly identical.

So either its ignorance on the Apple store employees' part (most likely), or them not wanting to take responsibility for you doing something outside the scope of the sale.

So are you saying that, for example, that there is only one U.S. GSM version of the 5s that you can use on AT&T or T Mobile if it's unlocked, without any degradation in any mode?

Yes. The Verizon model is identical, as well, except the CDMA radio is turned on.
