It is true they won't tell you it's unlocked, but it's nothing new. I grew tired waiting for the 4S to come out fully unlocked and picked up an off contract at&t phone since everyone on this forum said they are unlocked anyway. Bought mine in the philly apple store and they tried to say the same thing. It's a stupid policy.

Yes. The Verizon model is identical, as well, except the CDMA radio is turned on.

This is an important point that should not be minimized. The Verizon iPhone is the only one that will work on all the major US networks. It will not work with LTE on Sprint; that's the only limitation. It is also the ONLY one that WILL work with Verizon because Verizon only lets devices with specified IMEIs access their network.

The Verizon iPhone will work with AT&T, T-Mobile and providers outside the US except for any company that uses the same LTE band as Sprint (there was a provider in S. Korea that uses the same band based on some checking I did yesterday).

The AT&T and T-Mobile iPhones do not have an active CDMA radio and cannot be used with Sprint or Verizon.

Guys, this is not some ploy at all.

Apple receives a kickback for signing people up to contracts. On top of manufacturing the handset, it's more $$$ for them when they sell this way.

In addition, I am guessing that staff receive some sort of incentive to sign people up too.

So are you saying that, for example, that there is only one U.S. GSM version of the 5s that you can use on AT&T or T Mobile if it's unlocked, without any degradation in any mode?

Not me saying, Apple saying. Identical phones. Photo proof posted. Why is there still doubt?

Yup. ATT/TMo ones have a CDMA radio, but its turned off.

How could anyone question the total accuracy of one with the capacity to discern so acutely, and is a keen observer of the human condition.

And that smirk must have really been a killer look!

Just a suggestion...drop that creative writing class.:D ;)

I am so tired of seeing you CONSTANTLY nitpick on people, no matter how subtle you think you are being. You can ad smiley faces to your mocking comments all you want, but most of us can still see right through that bull-****.

Apple employees don't make comission on any sales. They could careless if you wanted device only or a contracted phone. In fact, in the store my friend works at they hate doing upgrades because it takes so much longer to do than just selling the phone outright.

When I worked there, Apple went out of their way to remove any financial incentive for staff to "push" sales on customers. I still have friends that work at that store, plus friends from that store that have moved to various stores around the country, and there's still no incentive to push a sale.

It will be big news if Apple Retail every changes that policy, IMO.

They prolly just want people like OP to leave the store. You read his other posts and he's a hardcore "professional scalper".

100% no. Unlike most other phone resellers, Apple Store employees do not get spiffs, bonuses or commissions for anything they sell, be it phones, Macs, or accessories.

Interesting. Sucks for them! But I guess that could benefit the customer to a certain extent. Seems like an Apple move though, why pay employees more when you can just....not...

I hope this is lack of knowledge then. A salesman bending the truth is one thing. Being told to do so by Apple is another thing.

What about the Managers ?

Is that why they look envious and get mad when I bring in 10,000 in cash and buy dozens of phones ?

It's actually really funny. Apple trying to limit their bottom line and not accepting money from legitimate people who have money, and willing to pay for it.

Sounds very un-capitalist to me. Very socialist.

You carry 10k on you to go shopping ? And your a legitimate customer ? If I was a manager alarm bells would be ringing! But cool story bro.

If anything you wrote is In fact true, I'd be worrying about your safety after flashing your money to make those managers envious ;)

I'm 6'5", resemble a Spartan warrior, and train UFC.

In other words, intimidating. (also armed)

No troll.

Um... ok.

Dude... people who manage retail stores are not "envious" when people can come into the store and buy stuff. Particularly managers. They DO get bonuses for meeting sales goals.

I think they find you as annoying as you sound in your posts here, and are caught between the hassle of selling phones to someone who (if you are anything in person like you come across on here) is incredibly annoying and that they KNOW full well is buying up all the inventory they have to go scalp it and leave them to repeatedly tell regular customers that they are out of stock so that customers will bitch at them about Apple and how they don't ship enough phones.... and... just wanting to move inventory (which you will allow them to do, as you apparently walk in waving large fans of hundred-dollar bills due to your thriving "business")

So, yeah. They are not glad to see you. They are also not envious of you. They think you're a pain in the ass, I suspect.

Yes. I am quite certain that they simply find you annoying.

Not intimidating, unless perhaps they wonder if you may attempt to rob the store with your massive presence and loaded weapons.

Don't worry about the OP, man. He's armed and dangerous.

If he doesn't shoot the customers who want iPhones so he can buy them all instead, he'll just drop the manager with a roundhouse kick.

Perhaps it is just my cynical attitude, but this thread is straining credulity to the breaking point. It requires a suspension of disbelief beyond my meager abilities.

I hesitated to write this, but the 6'5", heavily armed Spartan Warrior doesn't know my address, so I'll take the chance. :p

You sure are making a lot of assumptions and accusations....I would like to have seen this in person because you make it sound overly dramatic.
This

There's a difference between not advertising and making FALSE STATEMENTS.

This is deceit and misleading customers... it is a blatant lie.
Not really, they are selling carrie 'specific' models, there is no unlocked version to choose. It just so happens that some carrier models bought full price are unlocked, they are not doing something one could call illegal.

Also, to you it doesn't make a difference since you scalp them...

Wow, what are the odds. I'm 6'6", resemble The Hulk and am Special Forces and walk around with $50,000 in cash.

Not even a cool story bro.

You need to stop watching 300 mate!

x2 . Though I am a 110KG rugby player so having someone call themselves a spartan warrior amuses me.
Had he said samoan rugby player.... they hurt!

Who describes themselves as a spartan warrior lol? is he trying to say he is Greek? Big nose? Watches 300 too much? Like to walk around with his shirt off?

Cause Spartan combat techniques have nothing to do with UFC, and real spartans work heavy armour instead of the muscular/cut guys in 300.

I just think that most of them don't know what they are talking about... I went to the soho apple store in NYC yesterday night and ask I I can buy a Verizon 5s. I simply just said just I want to buy the phone only ( many if you will know it as "device only") such a simple sentence to understand the apple employee told me I needed to get a 2 yr contract and there was no other option.. I just simply walk out the store.
