What's the limit each employee can purchase? Is it just one?

any apple employee out there want to buy one for me? i'll pay for it and give you $50 on top of it. i'm looking at the 42 milanese one.

At the retail places I know, that kind of thing would cost you your job. Which makes this a truly disgusting offer. You want to save a few hundred dollars, while someone is supposed to make $50 off the deal while risking their job. And of course giving up their own chance to get an expensive watch for half price.

What's the limit each employee can purchase? Is it just one?

Typically there is a small limit. You can be absolutely sure that the watch can only be purchased for personal use or as a present, but not for resale.

and even with 50% discount apple will make good money....

... because it makes the employees happy, and happy employees make the company more money.

You do realize they are also paying wages to their employees right? They aren't paying the media. Giving the media a freebee makes sense since it's a one-time "payment".

And how many free watches did Apple give out to the media, a pretty low number.

As of 2014 Apple employees over 72,000 employees. You really think 72,000+ sales to employees will really make a difference in the reported sales figures.

It's actually quite insulting that someone would post that this is to pad sales figures. You can't hide earnings reports in discounts to staff.

This only proves how HIGH a markup consumers are paying for an Apple Watch.

No it doesn't.

All Apple employees got one of the first gen iPhone's for FREE when they came out. Does that suggest Apple was able to manufacture them for free? Of course not.

If anything, it shows that the markup is slimmer than the phone since they're only getting a 50% discount instead of a 100% discount.

Considering who made the original post, that I responded to, it's not unusual.

Your point? I was just replying to someone that said Apple basically treats their employees like dirt because they'd soon give the media a freebee instead of their employees.

My point was the fact that Apple gave out very few Apple watches. I actually agree with what you posted. Sorry if it came across differently.

That's (almost) like saying CostCo gives away food for free and therefore is charging way too much; that's false, it's called "marketing".

Having all their employees wear the watch is another form marketing! Having employees integrating it into their usage and know how to easily use it is another.

Apple should be giving these away to their employees. BUT since all don't want a watch (and some would turn around and sell them) this is a good way to get buy-in and only get the people really interested. (Although, I suppose some will still buy and sell to make a profit)

Only robbed if they don't have a choice.. plenty of choices out there.. don't like it, don't get it or buy something else.

The $350 at $175 is actually very nice deal for the sport.

That said, based on some early costs leaks, the Apple Watch Sport is costing Apple around ~$200 - $250 to make.. It's not until the Steel that they start getting to 50% margin.. In which case they are barley breaking even (Steel models) or losing (Sport models) at the 50% off..

Miniaturized technology like this is not cheep.. The S1 SoC alone cost more than the current iPhone.. Estimated $50-75 for just that..

This is more about getting buz / excitement among employees.. which will spread to customers. It's what in business, is often termed, lost leader. Worth the loss now, to gain the momentum ...

Harden steel, not cheep.. heavy to transport.. twice as much as aluminum..

They make their real money on bands that employe's, excitedly, up-sell.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong.. a year from now, Apple's Supply Chain machine will likely have the cost to produce this current generation of Apple Watch's down by half and all sport models will be at least 40% magian, steel even more. This is just how it is with a new product category for a company.. Apple has the cash, they might as well as fling it at employee's to get them buzzing..

Do you have a link to these "early cost leaks"? Are they from credible sources?

Media get advertisement bucks from Apple plus free products so it's smarter to work in media than be enslaved to Apple and still have to pay to promote company products.
