That's too bad. I need a new printer, but was holding out since I figured I can get one free when I purchase a 2012 MBP in a few months. Guess I'll get it sooner than later

LOL ... good one!!!

And who cares ...... printers are dirt cheap!!!!

This move won't hurt Apple one bit. People will still buy their Mac and pay for their printer of choice. It was nice while it lasted. Apple only cares about one thing, money.

I take this as part of Apples broader "get green" strategy.

Printers are so non-green, what a waste, all those little non-refillable $$$ ink cartridges. Talk about a scam and profit maker over being green.

Is it really that hard for HP/Canon/Epson/etc to make printers with refillable ink cartridges?

Guess so, if after all this time none are on the market that I am aware of.

They may actually be doing people a favor. My "free" printer prints 30 pages before all four cartridges need replaced at a cost of $50. That's more than a dollar a sheet! Ridiculous.

The printer manufacturers make their money on ink. Apple makes their money up front.

Be assured, the $100 rebate was making Apple money. It would have stopped the program because it stopped making money on it.

Mmmmm...more likely it was more paperwork/logistics that Apple just didn't want to deal with anymore...and the fact that Apple was practically bankrupt when the program started...Apple's got plenty of cash...no need to offer freebies.

I thought the rebate was a joke anyway...the printers were FAR too expensive to begin with...you can buy dozens of brands for $99-$129 at any store any day of the week...and not have to fill out rebate forms and all that baloney.

Maybe (wishful thinking) Apple will simply offer some kind of "package deal" when you order a Mac and a printer together...PC vendors and retail outlets have been doing this for decades.

It's all a shell game anyway.

I think it likely has more to do with the fact that people are printing less and less. I even take my iPad on interviews instead of a hard copy of a pitch or resume, and it always pleases people that I am avoiding wasted paper.

Likewise, I'm making a big move to paperless this year. There's little I need paper for. Ubiquitous iPad means accessing all my data & all my computers in seconds, able to send info in ways superior to paper.

For when I do need to print (photos mostly) I have 3 printers, two unused, better than what the rebate offered. Why would I want another? How about a more useful rebate offer?

Naysayers: have you seen what an interviewer's printed copy of your resume looks like? Eeeech!

The guy who took the picture of the text needs to learn how to use SHIFT+APPLE+4

Only on MR would you find fanboy Apple-ites defending a company that is killing purchase incentives.
Remember the day when Apple gave a free iPod touch with a Mac purchase? Now its a 100.00 App store credit. Ridiculous, given their ASTRONOMICAL financial success.

They need the room for the TVs

Apple Stores have limited back-of-house space. I know from experience since I worked at the Nashua, NH store through last November. The printers take up a lot of shelf space out back, and with TVs coming Apple would happily trade the profit-starved printers for margin-rich TVs.

That's my rationale, anyway. If the TVs are coming, the printers are going.

Dang the lack of the iPod deal and now the printer deal is making me re-think getting a new Mac this summer for my senior year of college. Hopefully though the lack of promotions lead to lower prices, otherwise building a hackintosh looks more and more tempting every day.

This is the only reason I got a printer when I bought my Mac oh so long ago. I never would've bothered to get one otherwise. Came in need when I was in a huge rush to class and didn't have time to go to a lab/library or it was a blizzard out and the trek to the library wasn't worth it.

Am I the only one surprised that people can somehow warp Apple no longer giving away a printer into a good thing  When I bought my first Mac, the free iPod Touch and printer virtually sealed the deal for me. Now they offer neither. I love Apple as much as the next guy, it just seems a little ridiculous that people could actually be happy about this.

Save yourself money, and hassle, and buy a refurbed HP workstation printer, something like a LaserJet 4100. You'll be able to buy a toner cartridge for 30$ that will print ten times the pages of $50 an ink cartridge.

Couldn't tell you the last time I needed a printer at home...I just take most stuff digitally with me now. If I need something printed...which is super rare, I just print it at work.

I suspect that is part of why they cut it. Too many folks in the same game.

Also, it's possible that there could have been changes in rebate laws that make their 'cut it every 3 months and restart it the next day' a no go in some states and they don't want to offer it only in some areas and not others. Or the printer companies could have decided they don't want to pay the rebates anymore (because it wasn't Apple paying that money)

I always felt like that should give iWork for free after rebate as part of the back to school promotion.

forget that. Just preinstall it on new computers.

It just isn't Apple's style anymore to promote the use of printers. Now they say "Please save a PDF of this page for your records" for their confirmations of request, etc.

I think it's too bad. I know this marks me as an unsophisticated boob, but the Canon all-in-one printer that I received is perfect for my needs - which are minimal.

For example, in my work, hard copies are required by Medicare, they do not use electronic transmission yet. I am required to have hard copies of all my paperwork.
Weird. I thought there were no Canon printers in Apple's store. And it's the other way around for my company, Medicare requires electronic submission of everything, including the cash.

Love my Pixma.

Wrong.

Any company would realise why give an incentive to sell stock when you can sell just of much of it without the incentive. That's why the iPod deal was scrapped. Apple didn't need it to push a lot of Macs.

If not getting a printer rebate would stop you from buying a Mac (tho I bet you have other posts saying you want to do you own mackintosh, w/o taking time to look) then you might not really care about a Mac. My University store has an Apple store-in-store and gives student discounts on computers and some accessories. Online Apple does the same for enrolled students.
