Only on MR would you find fanboy Apple-ites defending a company that is killing purchase incentives.
Remember the day when Apple gave a free iPod touch with a Mac purchase? Now its a 100.00 App store credit. Ridiculous, given their ASTRONOMICAL financial success.

Honestly, what would you do if you were Apple? Giving away iPods when you don't have to is like playing Santa. Back in the day Apple was crawling out of situation where would almost go bankrupt, they needed to sell as much Macs as possible.

Nowadays, it's pretty much the other way around. Even if they scrapped the App store credit, they would sell Macs, so I don't see your point.

Not just Apple, but every rational thinking company would act this way.

I think it likely has more to do with the fact that people are printing less and less. I even take my iPad on interviews instead of a hard copy of a pitch or resume, and it always pleases people that I am avoiding wasted paper.

Why the minuses to a "right on" comment?

The actual initial propaganda of the so called "paperless office" has resulted in more printing than ever.

Many homes having computers now and kids doing their "artwork" at the productive ages of 3-6, plus older generations mindset of must have a hard copy generate plenty of waste paper.

Some office people even print out their e-mails to cover their butts due to office politics.

Being able to go truly paperless is advancing due to dropbox, icloud and the like, BUT it requires a strategy on how to set it all up.

That is the part most people struggle with.

Kudos to everybody who tries not to print.

BTW: There is a little shortcut script you can set up to hit " Command+P" twice which gets you immediately to saving something as pdf, rather than selecting it from the print box.

Doesn't work with non-fill in pdfs government forms etc., but 95% of all documents

Open system preferences
Select keyboard
Select Application short cuts in the left column
Select ALL applications
select "+" sign

Type Save as pdf... (3 periods) command P

Ha, I remember listing a half dozen printers on eBay at one point, all acquired through this promotion. They never did sell for very much… Apple's prices were quite inflated, so the $100 rebate was more like $40. Usually not worth the effort of selling it. A nice bonus though if you intended to use it.

Yep ... I have about a dozen new printers in the basement still in boxes. When you get the $99 printer free it's hard not to click it! But I have no use for them though I may finally be able to pass one on to my mother.

Weird. I thought there were no Canon printers in Apple's store. And it's the other way around for my company, Medicare requires electronic submission of everything, including the cash.

Love my Pixma.

Medicare requires hard copies of Progress Notes - at least in MA.

When I bought my first MacBook, I also got a Canon Pixma, MP490 at the Apple Store here in MA.

I really like it - although I wouldn't want to do much copying on it...it's soooo slooow.

Printing and scanning are more than adequate for my needs.

Well I guess we'll see if Apple announces anything to do with this at the education event.

It was nice back in the day getting a "free" iPod Touch and printer when you bought a mac as a student. Now it looks like no printer and maybe the iTunes gift card if they keep doing that.

Maybe they will just start giving out iPad 2's with student mac purchases instead :) (When the iPad 3 is out of course.) Or at least heavily discount them when purchased together.

Honestly, I think offer an iPad/Mac bundle would be better for everyone.
Even if it was the iPad 2 (assuming it does in fact stick around come iPad3). It totally pulls a new customer in Apple's echo systems, and would offer a value to a customer.

As for the printers, everyone has pretty much said it already. People don't really print much anymore, printers are cheap (it's the ink that gets your wallet upset), but I do disagree with people about the rebates not being worth their value.

Apple always had several printers for $99 or less... and sure, they might be $30 cheaper at Target, but it always came out to be free. Apple was also the best I've seen with rebates. You only had to log into the a website, all your info was there, and press submit. I've never waited more than 7 days to get the rebate back from Apple... most companies take 7 weeks from start to finish.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Tim Cook's new :apple: sucks! Many more changes to come and many more poor decisions to be made. This is just the beginning. Watch. If Apple weren't the juggernaut it is, he would drive this business into the ground.

It is my impression that the internal and external secrecy set up pre-dates Cook's ascension to CEO.

How is this "Tim Cook's new Apple"?

This has nothing to do with secrecy. It's his business decisions that are slowly turning this company into the dime-a-dozen. Tim only thinks about $$$. While Steve also cared about dollar signs, perhaps even more, his decisions were almost always in the interest of the customer and user. And while you could say "well not really" because he was stubborn, we were still left with signs and business moves every now and then that showed he cared. Tim Cook just strips that all away.

That's disappointing

Yet another perk for buying an Apple computer is gone.

I would have to agree with GREEN4U's assessment of the post Steve Jobs Apple. The more I see, the less I believe and it bums me out.

After the unbelievably rude and rotten service at the Apple Grand Central store and the stripping away of any benefit for consumers and pro-users, my stance as Apple only is starting to crumble.

I learned the hard way what people have been saying here for years: do not buy upgrades from Apple. Really folks, please don't. Listen to the common sense on these and other forums.

Seeing the removal of the printer rebate is the latest kick in the butt from a now former computer company I was once proud to support.

For all my indecision and such, I know this much: my 2010 iMac will be my last, and if I don't go Mac Mini or Mac Pro next, I will throw in the towel. The mounting jabs at consumers for a less wonderful product, less rebates/discounts and smug arrogance is really souring this gal's belief in Apple.

If this is the future of Apple, I'm not a fan of the worms crawling around at the top.

Be assured, the $100 rebate was making Apple money. It would have stopped the program because it stopped making money on it.

This.

I imagine the reason was that the shipping costs have gone up, lowering the margins on the printers...

I've also used my color laser printer to make my own 3-fold brochures and business cards, saving money over having them made up professionally. I've definitely gotten a few new regular customers from handing those out, making it well worth the initial effort and expense.
Actually if you go with a certain company online who almost always has specials online for business cards...and if you check emails from them sometimes you can score free brochures, t-shirts, etc....where you just pay shipping, you could do it a lot cheaper that way. I just paid less than $8 s/h for 250 2-sided Premium COLOR business cards, a custom-t shirt, a custom pen, a custom car door magnet, and a custom address stamp! That's less than $2 an item!

A slight over reaction?

Anybody who buys a computer because there is a free printer or some printer rebate involved, may want to check their logic?

The "I want it all and I want it now and I want it FREE" crowd is impossible to please.

If Apple gave away a totally free printer some would complain that it's not the model they wanted and if they gave away free Macs they'd complain about SSD vs. memory , anti glare etc.

You buy what you like and use and if Apple products are no longer what you want move on!

If Jobs had died years ago, you would have blamed the elimination of floppy disk and optical drive, influx of non user-replaceable parts, MobileMe fiasco, Antennagate, etc. on whoever were to replace him.

The only issue with bundling iPad and Mac together is that many people would do it just to sell the iPad, meaning that used iPad prices would fall and people looking to buy new would be tempted to buy from craigslist or ebay. But if it is the old model then that is not too much of an issue.

And Apple really did have the best rebates, log in, press a button and you are done. You can even log in to check the status. But most printers under $200 are terrible on ink anyways, you'd be lucky to print 20 color pages with images before running out of a $40 ink cartridge.

My overall beef is how rotten Apple's polices are becoming with their product. I've had a plethora of bad experiences with Apple product over the last two years but I've learned a few things in the process.

For the record, I never opted for the printer or rebate in all the years I bought Apple computers since that rebate was offered (3 iMacs in that time period). It just saddens me that something else was cut, it seems so damn rapid fire lately.

I am speaking as someone who has seen this company nearly fall and rise. I've given Apple at least $20 grand of my money over past 17 years most of which was not discounted or free.

And I remained loyal supporter even when I had a real awful year with iMacs in 2010 (my first bad year since 1999).

What I am really disappointed in is the lack of quality, rotten customer service, sneaky practices to lie and give as little discounts as possible (Grand Central gave me the Corporate Discount instead of the Educational when I gave them my University identification. It's like the one Manager at 5th who insisted that the educational discount was $20 when the online site said $50).

So you can say I overreact and give the same old song and dance of go buy something else. I won't because I hate PCs, but I've narrowed my playing field if I still need an Apple Computer after this iMac dies.

I'm not looking for free, just looking to get my money's worth. Getting a computer or iDevice that isn't a dud out of the gate would be fantastic too.

Get the quality back up and hire folks like some of the other Managers and staff at 5th Avenue and Apple will get back in my good graces.
