After notifying former MobileMe customers of an impending iCloud storage downgrade in August, the complimentary 20 GB of iCloud storage Apple has offered to those customers for the past two years has now expired.

As noted in an Apple support document, affected members will be downgraded to the 5 GB storage plan that is offered free with iCloud. Apple also offers extra storage plans for iCloud users, with an additional 10 GB of storage for $20/year, 20 GB for $40/year, or 50 GB for $100/year.

Users who are currently over the free 5 GB limit following the expiration of the complimentary 20 GB will see such features as iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail cease functioning until they bring their accounts under the lower 5 GB limit.

Apple replaced MobileMe with iCloud in 2011, giving paying MobileMe customers an extra 20 GB of iCloud storage as a complimentary gesture. The additional storage was originally set to be discontinued in September 2012, but Apple decided to extend the offer, giving MobileMe users another year of extra storage free.

Former MobileMe user... had it when it initially debuted. Paid 99$ annually, wished Apple should had given a certain amount to users that were on MobileMe.

Microsoft gave existing "hotmail" users 25GB.

fair enough...

Apple has given former MobileMe users plenty of time to sort out their data storage situation.

Shame I could never store what I wanted on that 20GB like I could with iDisk.

I was wondering if there were any stats for users who now have to pay for additional storage due to heavy usage - I consciously stayed within my limits.

I think my reasoning may have been based on the false kindness of this offer - it kind of reminds me of business models that rely on lulling people into living beyond their means.

Maybe even being encouraged to horde stuff and then the local 'authority' providing two years free storage knowing that it will be a service that is hard to back out of.

Not good enough

I downgraded to the 5GB storage, I deleted some of my backups and let my free 20GB storage go. iCloud ( in numbers ),Lost some really important documents. I will be storing my documents where i can SEE them. Apple have let a long time customer down. Apple ARE better than this. NOT HAPPY:mad:

WoW, look who's cheap now, just pay like the rest of us. I needed more space so I bought it, not a hard concept last time I check.

Apple should give us 5gigs per device.

Per device would be a nice approach ...

Each new device would get a redeem code for 5 GB permanent storage. This way only the first owner would be eligible for storage (or pass unused redeem code to the next owner)

DropBox gives you 5GB as well, your point?

I think the point is that with dropbox, you can actually see what your storing and you decide what you want to do with it. Personally I think dropbox and other storage solutions are better. Just a personal opinion.

I agree with you, plenty of time. Though it is $2/GB :D

I never once got an email about it going away. I wonder if it is because I had, last September before they extended it, gone in and selected the 20 GB/$40 option. I have 14.8GB used (two iPads, two iPhones, a MacBook Air, and my iMac all pulling data and/or backing up) and it is worth it to me to have it all in one than broken up. The service is easily worth it to me.

And you have know about this for how long? Last time I check Apple let us know about this over a year ago 2 if you count them extending it.

I'm a formal Mobile Me user and I think they extended this free period for us at least twice and given us heads up about it. I'm not sure why some people are surprised.

iOS device synch and backup should be COMPLETELY free and automatic. That would be a nice advantage to be in the :apple: ecosystem.

The current system of purchasing additional space, running over the size limits, managing all of this - this is just not user friendly. This would cost Apple very little, but would mean much better experience for all users.

Hi Zudy, I knew it was ending, you would have to to be a clown not to have known, But iCloud storage is not for me. We have so little control over it. I intentionally let it downgrade, not a good service Free or NOT, thats all

Actually, every device tied to the same iCloud account gets the 5GB. No need for codes or transfer issues. You take your phone off icloud, and your 5GB goes away.

Tie it into Find my Iphone or something like that.

I have to say, I've been more than pleased with what Apple's done. I used to pay for MobileMe, and giving us a year of free extra storage, and then another year of free storage, has been really nice.

I may end up upgrading later on, but for now I'm using less that 2GB of space.

I just want my iDisk back D:

I miss my idisk as well, at least you could see what you stored, unlike this dumb iCloud. Using dropbox which seems to have better functionality at least.

If you used to pay $65-70/year for mobileme and haven't found a preferable alternative by now, then $40/year to keep 20GB seems pretty good.

($65-70/yr was roughly the street price for mobileme)
