Why SHOULD they have to give you anything?

Because it's Apple and everyone expects everything from Apple to be free.

Personally, Apple should give us 1 share of stock everytime I buy a song on iTunes and 100 shares everytime I buy an iPhone and 1000 shares when I buy a MacBook Pro.

Except it's not only 5GB. It's 5GB plus 250GB or so of photo storage and unlimited iTunes media storage and transfer.

It is not unlimited iTunes media storage. iTunes Match lets me access 25,000 in the cloud. I have a library of over 35,000 tracks at last count.

I have to play games setting some of the tracks as "spoken word" so that iTunes Match skips over them and puts the other stuff in the cloud.

And, lest someone says something snarky about illegal music downloads, you can stop by my place and see the room dedicated the physical music media. Along with a healthy library of legal digitally downloaded music, I have an enormous collection of CDs, both from my own music fetish as well as inheritance from someone else even worse than me.

You can. If I want save a pages, numbers, or keynote document - I can choose to save it locally or in iCloud.

Apple has been trying (unsuccessfully) to retrieve "numbers" document that mysteriously disappeared (which applecare have admitted is happening) from my icloud account. After 3 months....NOTHING. I have had it with this inferior service, which i paid for !!!

DONT TRUST pages/numbers documents being saved in the iCloud !!

When has iCloud ever been a storage service?

Since launch day. You can save documents from your mac on it, games can save into it, you can share files through it, etc.

Granted it's still a crippled POS that doesn't allow you to store non-Apple files though.

I tend not to use it myself and have it disabled on my Mac's as its worthless as it stands.

You can never merge those accounts, so anything you buy one one, is stuck on one. Not an option really sadly.

Apple didn't do a good job of explaining iTunes ID vs. Apple ID over the years but I use a shared iTunes ID and individual Apple ID's. This way everyone gets their own contacts, calendar, Photostream, iCloud 5GB, etc. but we only need to purchase music, apps, etc. one time.

You may have to pick an account to make the iTunes master and re-purchase a few things but that is where it's at. Apple has been saying they will merge accounts for a long time but I wouldn't hold my breath.

This really is a mess. My iTunes ID from 2003 is a college email address (that I can't even access any longer!). My iCloud ID is from the .mac era.

When I upgrade devices, something goes screwy and my iTunes Match gets linked to the wrong account (there's some poorly worded pop-up message that warns you of this, and it's not clear what's going to happen if you push either of the two buttons you're presented with). Fixing this requires going through customer service, because you can only make such a change yourself every 90 days.

Why SHOULD they have to give you anything?

It's not 'SHOULD'. People are simply pointing out that it would be nice for Apple to stop being so tight. They have fallen behind.

- All (Official) Android devices get 15GB Google Drive storage, and because its Android you have the option of setting Flickrs 1TB free account as your default photo storage. Win: Android

- With Windows Phone you get access to 7GB of Sky Drive (IIRC some of the phones give you an extra 7GB on top of that just for the phone)

- Blackberry have a deal, and integration with Box.net to give users an extra 10GB storage (on top of Box.net's 10GB free account)

As it stands Apple's 5GB is pathetic when compared with the competition. Especially with it's half-assed/locked-down implementation with no filesystem access.

If you used to pay $65-70/year for mobileme and haven't found a preferable alternative by now, then $40/year to keep 20GB seems pretty good.

($65-70/yr was roughly the street price for mobileme)

Actually it's $40/year to get 25GB (20GB paid plus the free 5GB)...

I paid my $40 since I'm currently using 13GB...

Yeah it can be a pain in the ass. I too have more than one account due to not knowing that Apple ID and iTunes ID were the same. It's the same with Google - I've got god knows how many accounts with them due to the buyouts and changes, yet they too have no merge option.

It's a shame Amazon haven't done more with Cloud Drive. For $25/year you can get 50GB storage with them.

A lot of great points in there. Jobs tried to buy Dropbox, so i wonder why he went down the route of iCloud. Jobs clearly saw how good Dropbox was and apparently told the guys "he could crush them". Its going to to take a cold day in hell for iCloud to achieve this. Dropbox is WORTH paying for !!!

Yeah, I'm beginning to toy with the idea of buying Dropbox. Does the speed improve for paid members? It has always been just a tad slow for me, even back when I had a faster connection before moving into my first home. If Dropbox added some of the features from Droplr or CloudApp then I'd probably switch. I love having my own custom short URLs and ability to easily share files by dragging them to the icon. It would be great if you would drag the files onto the icon and it automatically pastes the share link to the clipboard and moves the file into the Public folder—along with the ability to easily password protect files and get stats on views. I pay about $4/mo for Droplr and really love it. For that price I get 100GB of space but files are limited to 1GB in size. I just wish they would hookup with Dropbox already and make a baby.

I now appear to have a Mobile Me account name, an iCloud account name and an Apple ID, none of which recognise each other. Apple keep saying they are going to come up with a way of merging these ID's into a single ID. Well I am still waiting and when they are finally winding up Moblle Me, it would be a good time to sort this out. You don't seem to be able to transfer data and information from one ID to another and then delete the surplus ID. iTunes and my Macs use my Apple ID (apart from iCloud sync) but my iOS devices use my Mobile Me ID. This is just plain silly.

Exactly my problem and it is insanely frustrating.

I tend not to use it [iCloud] myself and have it disabled on my Mac's as its worthless as it stands.

That's a little harsh IMHO. With iCloud, edits to iPhone contacts, calendars, Pages and other documents will ripple through to the Mac in no time. And vice versa. My description of it is that it is extremely worthwhile.

Dropbox and iCloud are two very different things. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they serve different purposes.

Agreed. I don't care much at all for iCloud's file saving services because documents are "siloed" within the separate apps you use to edit them. I much prefer Dropbox's integration into the Finder and being able to use it as a kind of file system on iOS. Not to mention the sharing and collaboration it makes possible.

What iCloud does seem to be quite good for, though, is quick and painless syncing between iOS and OS X in Apple apps like Calendars, Contacts, Notes, stuff like that.

Holding out

Since PhotoStream doesn't count against the quota I turned off Photos for iCloud backup (you can dig into what you want to be backed up per app). I realize this doesn't backup videos but it got me under quota and now I can play the waiting game and see if Apple comes down on $ per GB

Well, you can put a file anywhere in your Dropbox folder on your computer, then right-click that file and get a link copied to the clipboard immediately.

I've gotten my money's worth out of Dropbox many times over. I have two computers and a phone, and the fact that everything I need is synced across all three at all times is very much worth it to me. And that's not even getting into the fact that I can drop a file into the folder I share with my writing partner and she'll have it sync to her machine immediately without having to do anything but be connected to the internet.

Actually, every device tied to the same iCloud account gets the 5GB. No need for codes or transfer issues. You take your phone off icloud, and your 5GB goes away.

Tie it into Find my Iphone or something like that.

No - he's talking about an extra 5 GB per device added to your iCloud free storage. Right now all your devices are sharing a total of 5 GB, you don't have 15 GB with your mini, your phone and your mac.

I started way back with iTools something like 12 or 13 years ago, then paid $99 (plus tax) annually for .Mac. and them MobileMe (still hate that name).

5GB free works for me. I manage my devices from a computer so I'm probably not the target market for iCloud services and upgrade. Apple did extend the 20GB offer twice so I have zero complaints.

Also, I've stuck with @mac.com for email, although I see that @me, and I presume @icloud still work.

I dont use Pages or Calendar, hence why it's pretty useless. If it had file storage options for non-apple apps it'd be great, but still a ripoff if I wanted to buy more storage.

Look at the pricing (I'm using 100GB here as an estimate as many start at higher than Apple's 10GB entry)

Apple: $200/y for 100GB (2x 50GB accounts @ $100/y)
Google: (15GB free anyway) $59.88/y for 100GB
Amazon: $50/y for 100GB
DropBox: $99/y for 100GB
Box.net: $120/y for 100GB
SkyDrive: $50/y for 100GB

Apple's offering is crazily overpriced, and extremely limited. I dont think I was being harsh at all.

Sure, it's great if all you want it to do is take backups, and sync Apple-only documents from device to device. But for basic every day stuff (i.e copying anything else) its very, very restrictive and very expensive.

The only feature of iCloud I think I use is Photo Streams, although even then its just to get photos from my iPhone to my mac without having to plug in.

Is the dropbox that gives you 5GB the same dropbox that gives me only 2GB?

No its the same Dropbox that gives me 21.38 GB for free.

Yes, you can get alot of extra free space with them, just gotta jump through some hoops. :)

That's what I was saying - each device tied to your icloud gets 5GB. When you remove icloud from the phone, it takes away 5GB.

DropBox gives you 5GB as well, your point?

Dropbox gives you their lowest tier for FREE.

Apple gives you 5GB ONLY if you spend several hundred dollars on one of its devices. If you have multiple Apple devices, you get NO additional storage.

Plus, Apple's prices are way too expensive compared to Google Drive, MS's Skydrive, or Dropbox - basically double what the competition charges.

So, your point?

Can I get some clarification? I have read, some posts, in here that each device gets a 5gb limit. I don't get that. My iPad and iPhone share a 5gb limit. I procrastinated and didn't reduce my iCloud storage until this morning when I got the over the limit email. I did receive a lot of emails warning and kept putting it off.

But, I only see a 5gb bucket of data to share between all of my devices, not 5gb for each. Is there a way to do that? I could pay for it but I honestly never used more than 7 - 8gb and so it doesn't seem necessary. Thanks!!

Good point... however, considering that, maybe you should just pay $20/mo until you exceed 15GB ;)
