Apple today hosted a virtual event to introduce its first three Macs with its custom-designed M1 chip, promising up to 3.5x faster CPU performance, up to 6x faster graphics, up to 15x faster machine learning capabilities, and up to 2x as long battery life.

Humorously, the event ended with a brief appearance from John Hodgman, known as the PC guy in Apple's iconic "Get a Mac" ads from 2006-2009. Matching his persona from those ads, Hodgman attempted to justify his louder operation and inferior battery life as a PC compared to the new fanless MacBook Air with up to 18 hours of battery life.

Hodgman can be seen at the 45:27 mark of the Apple Event. We've also embedded a user-uploaded clip below, but it might be removed at some point by Apple:

Justin Long, who played the Mac in the ad campaign, did not make an appearance today.

Apple's new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini with the Apple-designed M1 chip are now available to order on Apple.com and through the Apple Store app, and they will be available in stores starting November 17. Pricing starts at $999 for the MacBook Air, $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and a lowered $699 for the Mac mini.

It was the best part. But it was a great announcement, I realized how short I am on Machine Learning in my iLife.

This throwback made my day! Wasn’t expecting it all. The “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” series, to me, is Apple’s most memorable marketing campaign.

[I’d have said it was their 1984 ad if I was alive to have seen it myself. 😜]
To be fair, the 1984 ad was that, just one ad. It was not a campaign. And even though it was cinematically impressive, it didn’t actually help the Macintosh sell very well.

Loved seeing him and it was a great nod to the classic commercials - the return to Mac vs PC days. Too bad Justin Long wasn't there as well. I totally see him helping PC off to an outlet or just standing there shaking his head as PC limped off at the end.

I'm unsure what to think. The new Macs look sleek. But, man alive, do they keep what's under the hood kind of vague. And aggressively not user-replaceable. Dell's new XPS is a machine with good graphics too, and *cough* you could put it into an e-gpu. Want to see a head-to-head on compiling code with these side-by-side.

20 hours of battery life is something I could not care less about. The PC guy says "where are you going? Just plug it in."

Well… yeah. If it better suits my needs, I can deal with all-day battery life and forgo the two-day.

I would say the Think Different campaign is their most memorable, and profoundly impacted their brand. You could see echos of it in the videos they presented today.

I think Hodgeman did it because he realizes he is John Hodgeman. I think Justin Long didn’t do it because he is trying to prove he is too cool for this.
Or he was just busy. I dunno.
