You folks just can't stop. Some of you said no one would buy the ipad because it lacked this and that. Now when you hear the huge presell numbers you troll out your disappointment that it didn't sell more. Boo hoo!
Do yourself a favor and stop wasting your time bitc**** about what people buy. It is really none of your f****** business.

Can I put this in my sig? You took the words right out of my mouth :D

Agreed....I thought there would be a lot more than that sold...

I think the general public (i.e., non-fanboys like me) will need some time to try this out and understand it before buying. It is a new way of working/surfing/consuming media.

Also, people will jump in after the first big wave of GOOD apps are released. I think these numbers are an encouraging indicator, but they will rise steadily over time after it is released and people can pick one up and try it.

Aside from the fact that your details don't matter to my metaphor, no, I own Porsches because I prefer my cars not to suck ;)

I do agree about Porsches, having owned many 356 Porsches from 1950 and up. Ferraris, however, do not suck, as you write. I primarily own early V12s from the 50s and 60s. They definitely don't suck as you imply. Have a great day!

The iPhone has been trailblazing the user experience - an when the older generations get their hands on it i think we will see a lot more silver surfers.

The biggest barrier to computer uptake is how awkward it is - how much you have to learn before you can get online.

There is a HI+UGE market out there that have been waiting for a computer you can pick up and turn on and off like a calculator.

And then there is the student market...... in 5 years this will be as common on campus as laptops.

What's there to understand? It's the same as running an iPhone or an iPod Touch, both were easily adaptable for most people. With the iPad it's the same thing, you just tap on the icon and run the application, does that require time to figure out? There's no Finder or file management to figure out. It's not a "New Way", it's just a better way. ;)

For the record, the same people who compiled the original 2 and 6 hour estimates have come up with 120K for the day, which used a factor of only 1.1 per order, probably on the light side (plus reservations, which I would estimate at 30K). 150K for day 1 pre-order not too shabby.

It's important to remember - that number doesn't include pre-orders for store pickup.

If you can use an iPod, you already know how to use an iPad.

I am going to wait to see how it all goes. I refuse to buy one right now because of apples disgusting no tethering rule. How dare apple tell me i must take ANOTHER subscription and pay every month to use the internet on the ipad.

If i buy the ipad, i want internet, but i have an iphone. I would be more then happy to pay for the software to tether, so they can make the money back that way, but i will not pay for another subscription, why do i want to pay for 2? morons.

Would be a great feature to be able to use our iphones video camera and video conference using the ipad :)

what you fail to understand is not an apple rule
but att will no allow tehtering
apple gives you the device
att decides the plan

check your stuff before talking

What I don't get is it is just a oversized iPod Touch with 3-G ability (if you want to pay more).

And that is a bad thing because?

What we have here is a tablet pc with a large bright screen that works as smoothly as an iphone.

you can browse the web, watch movies, write letters, make spreadsheets, read books

it has a realistic price and the cachet of the :apple: badge.

Most people think the problem with computers is the tech gets in the way of using it.

If you can't see the HUGE attraction of a computer you can turn on and off like a calculator - then you are part of the tech-savvy 20% of the population this thing ISN'T aimed at.

That was mine too :). What I don't get is it is just a oversized iPod Touch with 3-G ability (if you want to pay more).

There are 30,000 posts in this section and this line is still being trotted out. We all know both sides of the argument. It's not such an intelligent comment the ten-thousandth time.

Spreadsheets? That's clearly a gimmick feature. Maybe if you're doing inventory for your church bake-sale?

Not so fast cowboy! When I got my 1st gen iPhone a friend was telling me how useless it was because you couldn't edit spread sheets like you could on his phone. He swore he did it all the time.

Don't want one?Don't buy one and quit looking like an idiot telling everyone they are stupid for enjoying something you've never used.

What gets me is this.... everyone that is dead set against the ipad. WTF are you doing in this thread to begin with? If it doesn't interest you then move along.

Makes you wonder doesn't it?

Nobody's going to sit up on their deathbed and say"I just wish I'd spent more time posting comments on threads about products I had no intention of owning."

Why is it that people think that every device has to do everything and be everything for everyone (and all for just $499)?
Multitasking? Serious database work? Programming? Large spreadsheets? Virtual machines? All these tasks I do comfortably on my iMac and my MBP. I'm not thinking of getting rid of either. I'm buying the iPad because it promises to be great at what you termed "consumption (reading, playing games, watching movies)." Why would I want it to multitask?

On top of that if I find myself out with just my iPad I *could* create a document or spreadsheet, or write a long e-mail, etc, maybe not under ideal circumstances, as you say, but it's an option and choice is good.

Also, to be honest the iPad would perfectly fill ALL the home computer needs of my girlfriend and be a far better experience than the netbook she struggles with now, why be derisive of that? Not everyone needs to be a 'serious' user.

Here's an analogy.A Swiss army knife has a screwdriver and a corkscrew.Does a Swiss army knife suck because it is good a a knife and less good as a screwdriver?Or is it nice to carry for the things it does well, and handy to have in a pinch when you need to tighten a screw?

Actually, I agree with you. What I meant to say was that people will need time to understand that this device can (and will) be used for more "traditional" functions of a computer.

But it is a new way of doing things with a computer. Using your finger and using your mouse are not equivalent. And if you look at how Apple designed the UI widgets, they spent an awful lot of time ensuring that the widgets made sense for a "touch-based" device. They didn't just take Cocoa widgets and port them. Apple's iPhone/iPad design guidelines documents make you see just how much thought they put into the psychology of a touch-based device. Yes, its intuitive and easy, but some people will need time -- especially those who haven't used iPod Touch/iPhone.

I have more than a sneaky suspicion that irony barely registers on most Americans. Sarcasm is a form of irony, but it's just blunt and crude. A 200 year-old frontier nation relishes sarcasm, but the home of the mother tongue with it's cynical and self-deprecating society has a more finely-tuned humor meter. Don't argue words with someone whose profile reads Oxford. ;)

Daphtdazz, which college do you belong to?

I have a sneaky suspicion you are a pompous ass:)

You can do those features on the iPhone and iPod Touch today. Why do we need another product to further expand the iPhone OS line?

I may be wrong here, but I think that a starting price of $500 is kind of steep for an oversized iPod Touch (which starts at $200).
