But Steve Jobs specifically said it was better than a NETBOOK in his keynote address! LOL

Therein lies the problem and why I'm waiting for Revision B or C of this device.

One could argue that the GPU in the iPad is better than the standard GMA950.

Washington Post reporting that Apple sold 91K of the iPad in the first 6 hours of sales yesterday; does not count the reservations for store pickup.

This thing is a massive fail. Ha! LOL;)

it will indeed be interesting to see how all the haters can turn this into a "fail" for Apple-the-Antichrist.
let's hope they also remember that the ordering hasn't even gone global yet.

Yes, that's probably true, it's the PHONE OPERATING SYSTEM that is the problem with this device, not the technology.

The technology seems incredible, the operating system seems lame and not worth the money at this point.

This thing is half-baked in my opinion. Maybe it will sell. I don't know.

But it's certainly not as revolutionary as the iPhone and I'm standing on the fence at this point as to whether I want to buy one and I went through holy hell to try to get an iPhone on Day 1, having to drive tons of miles in 2 different directions to 2 different locations, none of which were near me.

It certainly appears to be an incredible success for apple. Selling over 90,000 ipads sight unseen. There is certainly a risk however, with so many sales, peoples expectations may be out of line with reality, that is when they get the ipad in hand they may be disappointed with what it actually does over what they imagined

regardless it's very good news for apple to sell that many so quickly

Any ideas at what rate the iPhone sold at previously? Have the iPad sales started stronger?

Easy: "These initial sales are all the Apple Fanboys. Sales will drop to zero next week".

Now, I don't believe this but I bet that's going to be their rap. :)

Well said... Now the only thing that concerns me are the lines come April 3rd ;)

But Steve Jobs specifically criticized NETBOOKS in his keynote address! LOL

Therein lies the problem and why I'm waiting for Revision B or C of this device.

And furthermore, the iPAD doesn't replace anything I already own.

Yes, it's cool, I'd like to play with one, but after my geeky giddiness is over, what is it good for?

It doesn't surf the web correctly.

It doesn't act like a netbook, can't run 2 programs at the same time.

It doesn't have a camera.

User Experience, UI, App Store.

That's the key. THAT is why the iPad will succeed. It's a platform that in time, is designed to replace netbooks and notebooks altogether. Content providers are already lining up to accommodate the iPad. The writing is on the wall.

If Apple can maintain selling that number of units (or quite a proportion less) I guess Apple marketing has worked. I for one want to have a play with one before purchasing.

I am going to wait to see how it all goes. I refuse to buy one right now because of apples disgusting no tethering rule. How dare apple tell me i must take ANOTHER subscription and pay every month to use the internet on the ipad.

If i buy the ipad, i want internet, but i have an iphone. I would be more then happy to pay for the software to tether, so they can make the money back that way, but i will not pay for another subscription, why do i want to pay for 2? morons.

Would be a great feature to be able to use our iphones video camera and video conference using the ipad :)

"The iPad will fail. It will never sell."

"The iPad will sell but only to Apple fanboys"

"Apple will sell a ton of these things, but only to idiots."

"I ordered one."

ALL from our loveable "geek" contingent on the web. Brilliant when it comes to understanding tech. Clueless when it comes to understanding the market.

That's actually one of the device's strengths. Do you actually understand tech beyond the specs/price ratio?

Normally I'd agree with this sentiment, but

1) This wasn't the case with the original iPhone (no pre-orders, but lines that started days ahead of the on-sale date, which is an even greater investment) and yet early buyers generally said it lived up to the hype.

2) The iPad is a variation of the iPhone -- and I do not say that derisively, but just to make the point people are familiar with the OS & hardware; with iPhone apps. Similarly, they have had time to become comfortable with what was one of the iPhones most controversial aspects, the virtual keyboard.

3) The people who pre-ordered are mostly tech junkies & early adopters, many who own an iPhone/Touch. Again, I don't say this as a put-down-- I'm one of them, but mention it because this "class" of consumer is generally more accepting of Rev A. products not being 100% perfect -- even assumes there will be minor bugs or misguided GUI cues.

4) There has been plenty of debate over e-ink vs. the iPads backlit IPS screen. People know what they are getting into in that regard.

Um - last time I checked, Apple did not provide any type of network access subscriptions. I think it might be the phone companies that you have an issue with - not Apple as the "disgusting no tethering rule" is AT&T's policy, not Apples.

Damn, Late and Stuck AGAIN

I had dreams of being #1. Sat at "We're improving the store for you" starting at 7:28. Hit reload every 15 seconds. At 7:30:05, got a version of the page w/o graphics. Clicked on "iPad" link, got to the description page, had to go back to "Store" and "iPad" to get a "pre-order" link. Arrgggh. Debated for additional 15 seconds...to 3G or not to 3G...arrrgggh. Ordered. It must've been 7:32 by then. So 50K/2 hrs=25K/1 hr=417/1 min= I got the 834th order. So much for dreams.

Now I'm stuck with an iPad, for God's sake, of all worthless things. What am I gonna do with THAT? Instant web surfing on a screen I can see with much less effort than my iPhone's, e-books on the bus on a screen I can see with much less effort than my iPhone's, basic spreadsheet capability (I have a simple family budget ss, not something that designs nuclear weapons), much more, and oh, everything the iPhone and Touch will do (except phone calls, but, hey...I gotta iPhone), with the advantage of a screen I can see, etc. This was obviously a horrible decision. My life is over.

I pre-ordered the 32GB, 3G model with a bunch of accessories in the first hour. I believe the total was about $829.

I resisted buying a WIFI one as well in order to have one around April 3rd.

Agree that comparing this to a netbook is a big stretch, this is a satellite device, even more than a netbook. There are many people whose main digital interface with the world is a netbook. Its hard to imagine more than a small percentage of people saying that about an iPad.

What it will be is an amazing digital content consumption device. Sitting in a cafe reading the blogs or the web, sitting on a plane or in an airport, those outings when you just do not need to bring a laptop, but your iPhone isn't enough. The book experience although perhaps not as easy on the eyes as the E-ink technology on the Kindle, I am guessing will be excellent.

They will sell these by the container load.

Exactly. I am sure Apple would love for AT&T to offer tethering. To which people will say "Apple should have dumped AT&T". Sure...ok but let's face it, you go with the best financial options for business partners and clearly AT&T has tried hard to hold on to the exclusives on Apple gear.

I would be willing to bet that Apple had already engineered a CDMA/EVDO version of the iPad board and was ready to roll with it over to Verizon, should AT&T have not come up with the data plans that it did for the iPad.

Why would Apple invest resources in a technologically dead company.

.......

I'm wondering if Apple will count these as first quarter sales (as the units will probably ship in March).

....

I doubt will be included in Q2 (Jan-Mar) sales. Quarter ends Saturday 3/27. It's possible that will leave China by then but not sure if individually identified within bulk shipment, and to what extent still in aapl's control, as opposed to delivered to independent shipper.

I doubt this is counting reservations either, since you technically haven't placed an order.

It's a hard life! ;)

He is in for a BIG, BIG disappointment then...hopefully he doesn't live in a high building where he is able to jump out of a window.

It's absolutely amazing how clueless these trolls are, repeating again and again the same mistakes when demanding that Apple build a device with all features crammed in. No wonder they continue to quote Windows-fanboy nonsense such as Enderle's articles.

MS IS DEAD. AND SO IS DELL.

It's because people like kernkraft are paid to regurgitate Enderle-type crap, just like Enderle is paid to do. Why else would they spend so much time here?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

That is pretty disappointing actually. I would have thought they would sell out for April 3rd. Those numbers show that it is early adopters only and they aren't getting a halo effect from iPhone.
