Come on Apple! Even if you were saving M1 Max for the Mac Studio you should have at least offered a new Mini with the M1 Pro. Starting $1299 for 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD would have been reasonable, no?

Only here to hear from all the skeptics who were shrieking, "Mac Studio will definitely not look like these renders!" But I guess they're mostly occupied, procuring the finest crow for their lunch.

in all fairness I don’t think anyone anticipated it being so overpowered. Whether they call it one or not this is a Mac Pro, not a bigger Mac Mini.

Sure the performance may be great, but at the end of the day you are marketing a "studio quality" (whatever that means) larger Mac Mini for $6200 (properly config'd) where you can't upgrade anything, nor add additional hard drives. The cost is ridiculous, and the idea that "pros" want to put their computer on their desktop is just silly.

Apple really needs to understand that if pros are going to spend that kind of money, they don't want everything soldered to the board, and they need to be able to add the items they require without resorting to buying external Thunderbolt chassis.
I think the answer is that they have realized that "pros" are just fine with that. If they weren't, they wouldn't exactly be selling record (for them) numbers of MacBook Pros which are used the same way, just are not as powerful (and are portable obviously).

The cost for the CPU performance seems about right, but will be nice to see some real apps comparison of the 20 core ultra and either GPU.

Some random thoughts:
  1. The "Max" in the M1 Max is supposed to mean "Maximum", which is defined, by the Cambridge Dictionary, as "being the largest amount or number allowed or possible". I was not expecting Apple to release an even higher-end M1 Ultra, which is more than the Max. There is a serious nomenclature problem here.
  2. The M1 Ultra satisfies Tim Cook's desire to repeatedly upsell. M1 Ultra > M1 Max > M1 Pro > M1. What will power the Mac Pro?
  3. It puzzles me that the iPad Air and the iPad Pro have now the same processor. The 10.9-inch iPad Air sells for $599 (with 64 GB) and the 11-inch iPad Pro (with 128 GB) sells for $799. The 10.9-inch Air with 256 GB sells for $749; $150 for 192 GB storage is a total rip-off, but it still seems more worth it than the Pro.
  4. The high-end Mac Studio comes with 1 TB SSD only. Upgrading it to 2 TB costs $400, which is 10% of the overall price of the computer. Apple is again unashamedly overcharging for upgrades. And, even more unashamedly, 1 TB on the Mac Studio costs $400 ($0.4 per gigabyte), while 192 GB costs $150 on the iPad Air ($0.78 per gigabyte).
  5. The Studio Display costs $1,599, which is more affordable than what people were expecting. Still not "consumer-level", but it may find its way with creative professionals.
  6. Is the 27-inch iMac gone forever? Does it mean that the alternative is buying a Mac Mini ($699 minimum) or a Mac Studio ($1,999) plus the Studio Display ($1,599), plus mouse and keyboard, with an overall price tag much higher than the previous 27-inch iMac, just to have more wires and less convenience?
  7. How can the nano-texture glass cost $300 on the Studio Display and still cost $1,000 on the Pro Display XDR?
I appreciate Apple's products and the power it has put in the M1 processor. However, Apple's recent business and pricing tactics have driven me further and further away from its products. I am just hoping Qualcomm and/or Intel catch up with the M1 soon enough so there is more competition to put pressure on Apple.
If you're not profiting from the dropping prices of external storage for what is a sedentary setup, considering that the 1TB of internal memory most likely covers you on the install of all the necessary program + high frequency access assets, you can't blame apple for making a clean profit off people's ignorance.

So I think I'm gonna like the Studio Display very much... but $400 for the height adjustable option of the stand is something I don't like. I'm just gonna go with the stand that doesn't require any additional money. But I do need to go to the store and see how it fits with my view height before buying it.

You know what they say… Be careful what you ask for. Well perhaps it wasn’t you that asked for it but so many people have been wanting this so now it’s here 😂
I like the strategy, actually. I think it makes longterm sense to have the massive high-quality display decoupled from the processing tower. That way real Pros, who need state-of-the-art processing power every few years, aren't also forced to upgrade their panels along with the machine every time.

I would really like to see some performance benchmark for Houdini, Arnold rendering, Blender Cycle rendering, Blender timeline performance. I would like to see how it performs against the like of GTX 3080.

Typically, Apple's hardware is catered more towards videography, so as a 3D artist I would like to see some benchmark before making a jump.

Also as a hobbyist learning Rhino & Solidworks, I would love to see some performance on those two applications as well.

Mine is a 2019. Hopefully by the time it actually needs to be replaced Apple will have realized their huge mistake.
Honestly, I thought the same at first, but now I think the separate approach, while more expensive, is better long term. in 3-5 years your display will still work fine and you can just upgrade your desktop, be it a Mac Mini or Studio.

That said, I think the Studio with 64 GPU Cores and 64GP of Ram is $1,000 - $1,200 over priced. Matter of fact, the entire Ultra line of of the Studio is about $1,000 over priced IMO.

I'd also like to see those USB-C and SD Card reader ports on the front come to the Mac Mini

Hmmm. The display was a bit pricier than I expected (maybe "wanted" is more correct here, lol).

When I saw the price tag on the Studio I was like, "Nope! I'll wait for the next Mini." However, the M1 Max version of the Studio makes it a possibility. Probably gonna wait for an updated Mini though. I just don't need that kind of power. For the cost of an entry level Studio I could get a Mini paired with another Studio display, which would be pretty awesome.

Glad to see Apple still hates ergonomics on monitors. Why would anyone pay $400 for their adjustable stand when you could just get a VESA mount.

I can't tell if these virtual events are no fun, the announcements in general are no fun anymore, or if I just don't care. There are multiple products here that interest me but the presentation... I think I'm gonna stick with the recaps in the future.

I guess the new mac pro will be Studio with 2 slots for interchangeable ssd's.
Maybe dual-SoC option? DualFusion? Or MegaFusion?

I miss the orignal Fusion, it was great way to combine big and fast storage with cheap price.
Now tha macs are just more expensive every year.
Maybe use Studio will be quite cheap in 2024, when they release next version, which also has no upgradeability at all.
Which of course drops the re-sell value.

600 nits is enough for anything.
If you need more, close the curtains/blinders. Or move inside.
I just moved from 1000 nits to 600 nits on my gaming PC and it’s hard to tell the difference. However, we also have 1400 and 2100 nit displays. I can see things on the 2100 that are impercievable on the 1000.

Guess I'm stuck with my 27-inch iMac forever
If I could just use my iMac as a display, like you could with previous models, I'd keep my iMac just as a display and hook up a Mac mini and be fine with that.

Personally I'd be happy to see the new Airpods Pros announced. They are showing their age compared not only to the competition but also within the current Apple headphone / earbud line-up, an October launch seems to be a stretch to wait. Also, just to highlight that the tipsters often seem to make it up as they have all but dismissed there being any announcement at this event.

Obviously wishful thinking on my part as in the market for a pair as just had to send back the Sony Sony WF-1000XM4 which had far superior sound quality and noise cancellation than the current Airpods Pros but were just painful to wear for any length of time.
I'm waiting on some new ones too, but I know they do those around the iPhone events. I'm just hoping my Pros last until then because last time my original AirPods went through the wash about a month before the Pros were released. That was an awful month of going back to wired EarPods.

Nothing that apple can offer at the moment will be able to compete with the performance of nVidia cards, they may write some drivers to make use of the "neural engine".

That really saddens me, because it looked like a very inexpensive way to get 50+ gigs of VRAM

I think it’s a better choice for most pros because you can move that thing easily without having to lug around a display. I can imagine a YouTube content creator carrying one of them in his carry on. When you get to your destination you can always find a display to plug in.

M1 Pro in the Studio with 32GB/500GB SSD for $1500 would have been nice. I really don't need the extra CPU power. With military discount, cheapest Studio is $1800. There is that.
I was thinking the same thing. Even if they dropped the RAM to 16GB. A Mac mini M1 with 16GB of ram and 10gb ethernet is $1,200 and now seems hilariously underpowered for that price. Maybe the mini will get a silent update to M1 Pro later?

What they claim is their target demographic for the Studio are going to be amongst the people feeling inflation and the economy the most right now. $1,500 to pair an M1 Pro powered desktop with the decent display someone already has would be an all around great deal whether it is in the Studio or mini and would probably sell well.
