It’s a $1400 premium for the Ultra chip over the Max chip.

Everyone who said AS chips would be cheaper needs to explain this…
Noone sane said that, the incredible value proposed by the M1 chips in both the older Air and Pro chassis exist merely as a hook to get people into the ecosystem.

I would refer you to the part in today's presentation highlighting the iphoneSE's ability to get NEW customers into the ecosystem. M1 fills that purpose for general computing.

The Mac Studio is definitely the upgraded Mac Mini we wanted, they just left off the M1 Pro option, and that is why it seems like something different/more expensive. But if you look at the price increases for the the M1 Max and RAM on the MacBook pro, they are the same prices as the M1 Mac mini upgraded to the M1 Max with more RAM. If they had a M1 Pro Mac Studio for $1499-1699, that would help a lot.
The M1 Pro will probably equip the high-end Mac Mini and close the price gap.

Ok @MacRumors.com time to fix your website. www.macrumors.com still redirects to this livestream thread (https://www.macrumors.com/2022/03/08/apple-event-live-coverage-march-2022/) an hour after it ended...

Why is the MR homepage inaccessible? It just redirects to the live blog. I don't want the live blog!

See this thread.

This was most likely scripted and staged well before the onset of the current turmoil
It sure seemed like that. I would counter that by saying that the Apple had at least two years to notice that the world has changed. And while the war in Europe started a few weeks ago, the inflationary crisis has been with us the whole last year (at least in North America). I have a feeling that Apple has become too big to be able to change philosophies no matter what is happening in the world. But, at least they listened and brought back the USB 2.0 ports and the professional "high impedance" headphone jack lol. As if any self-respecting headphone enthusiast would not use a separate DAC/Headphone amp.

I mean, LIDAR, camera, and faceID aren’t exactly selling points, but the other features might be.
Maybe not selling points for you, but they are for others. Face ID was the main reason I got a pro over the other models. I can't stand touch ID, it's very hit or miss.

Honestly, while I love the aesthetic of Apple displays, I think it's a "No-Go" for me.
1) $1,500 is fairly steep for a display, an extra $400 for height adjustment, again, this product is about 20-25% over priced.
2) The bigger issue though, is that for $1,500 I am only getting ONE input. The second or third inputs could be dumb inputs, but given that I have a Mac & Windows PC (plus a work laptop), a single input display is basically useless to me. I use all three inputs on both my monitors daily (Each machine is setup for dual displays). If the second/third inputs did not work with the built in webcam and all that jazz, that would be fine (i.e. they could be HDMI).
3) For $1,500 I really do expect 30" - 32". I know the Pro Display XDR is 32" @ 6k, but again I don't think 30" - 32" @ 4k - 5k for $1,599 is unreasonable.

Good looking products overall, seem to be 20% - 25% overpriced, even for Apple, but they just aren't what I would personally want. We'll see what the updated MacPro brings.

Also, with the studio nearing $6k with the 64 core GPU and 128GB of RAM, I think that would just push me to a MacPro anyways. That way I could eliminate having a Mac AND Windows Gaming PC. Also upgradeability. I was kind of excited when i saw the modular slide, then disappointed when they meant that it was a display and desktop decoupled (versus the 27" iMac).

Good stuff, just not for me.

Yes, but you are attached to a specific form factor. You can only have a 13-inch laptop or a 24-inch all-in-one with the M1 chip. If you want anything different, you will have to pay for performance you may not need.

The weird thing that’s missing from the lineup is the M1 Pro.

My guess it there will be a silent update to the Mini line with this, or maybe the Studio range will get it in a few months.

Just seems odd to have that chip only appear in the MacBook Pro line when it seems like the obvious drop in replacement for the high end Intel Mini.
They want to give maximum exposure to the Studio right now, rather than cannibalise sales with an M1 Pro Mac Mini, which will undoubtedly replace the Intel Mac Mini that is still for sale (unless the M2 Pro materialises sooner rather than later.)

You knew right away it was off-tone since they led with the MLB Fridays news.

I guess some of us just get comfortable with the status quo.

I actually think the Studio is an exciting little box. The Studio Display is pricey, but it has a good camera, speakers and an A13 chip in it. Although it might not be mini-LED, the 5K panels that Apple uses are far from garbage.

Apple has always been a premium brand and for the last 30+ years on the inter-webs, I see and read posts complaining about Apple pricing. I'm resigned to it.
After they presented it, I actually expected a higher price tag on the display. Though, my heart kinda dropped at the 27" size. A 30" option (something sized and priced in-between the 27" and the XDR) would have been a "buy now" item for me. Unless I missed some display specs, the new current offering is basically my 2015 iMac display with fancy speakers and camera.

I cannot get past how horrible and stilted scripted delivery is getting to be.

Literally:

Which. on-ly Apple can.... do

<<FEATURE>>
This is the most ImPoRtAnT thing ever

<<FEATURE>>

Its su.....per!

Rinse and repeat
Haha yeah... I noticed it too. I think we should cut them some slack because they’re tech workers, not actors but I also think it would be great if they stopped trying to make these Apple events into movies. They were more fun when they were more low key

I don’t get it – what part of the Mac Studio is concidered "modular"? It was mentioned in the presentation I think.

The 27" monitor is kind of small for the high price, but the product isn't for me.

I think like a lot of people in this forum, we are waiting for a Mac Mini upgrade, which hasn't happened yet. There was no value presented here today (even a $30 increase on the tiny SE)

There’s nothing silly about that. They chose obviously not to integrate a fingerprint sensor under the display, given face ID is their future. I don’t understand why others can’t seem to grasp that concept since the iPhone X.
Then why did they start adding Touch ID to keyboards recently?

Oh agreed. Every feature is hit or miss depending on the person. Face ID struggles every time I change my glasses. Touch ID never fails for me. But I don’t add all 10 fingers, I add thumb and index four times and middle twice. I am never going to unlock a device with my pinkies.

I like the theatrics. It keeps an an otherwise staid presentation lively. Some of their artists have mad skills producing that.
