Tim said see you soon....at the end.
So we'll see a bigger iMac soon.
The 24' was sweet, but it will come a bigger iMac with M1X fairly soon I expect.

A bit of an uncharge? To be honest, this really kills the value proposition of the iMac.

I'm unsure when the iMacs have ever been positioned as a "low cost" or "value for the money" system?

They've always seemed positioned as an integrated all-in-one setup that provided its value in terms of simplicity.

Looking at current options:

Base new iMac is 24" 4.5K display, 8/256, includes keyboard for $1299
Base 21.5" Intel imac with 2K display, 8x256, no keyboard, for $1099.

Given the keyboard is likely at least the $99 of its processor, the price change is $100 for a substantially upgraded display. Add another $200 for an additional two USB3 ports plus integrated Ethernet.

Agreed. I think WWDC is going to be all about the PRO machines and I'm dead sure there will be an iMac Pro available in colors similar to what is offered in the iPhone 12 Pro. Space grey or perhaps forrest green.
iMac Pro XHR for sure

The first iMac (1998) was also $1299. I’m reading the combo of price and the gazillion color options as a back to basics type statement. It was never intended as a pro machine.

They will provably bring back the iMac Pro line, though not as a fantasy priced ultrapremium type deal, but rather something that is to the 24” iMac what the 16” MBP is to the MacBook Air.

What limitation does that create for your intended usage?
Streaming of self-made high quality videos, especially timelapse movies, from the NAS (network attached storage) to the 4K TV. For these files with high bitrates, 1 GB Ethernet is sometimes not sufficient (works only for medium quality ProRes RAW movie files from Final Cut Pro X). I don't know any other streaming device better suited than the Apple TV. But I know, these requirements are not mainstream compatible ...

I'm positive a thief would just see it and rip it off tho.
If the thief has an Apple product the airtag will announce itself because Apple is trying to prevent a one in a million stalking so removed the use case for half of what people want air tags for - preventing stolen stuff.

What kind of desk can only hold a computer that’s 21.5”/54.7 cm wide (that’s the width of the new 24” iMac)? Sounds like a manufactured problem. Unless you live in an RV or insist on keeping half a dozen greek statues on your desk at all times and wedging the computer between them, a 27” or 32” is fine for the most compact of IKEA desks.

I have books, a desk lamp, printer, chargers, and other assorted items on my desk. On my old desk (about 40") I definitely would not have enough space for the 27". I think you are underestimating how little free space is available for people who live in tiny apartments.

Cool.

yeah, that’s not a “mainstream” use case. 😀

Why does the iPad not have night mode or deep fusion the m1 is powerful

2021 and the iMacs STILL come with standard 8GB of RAM 🤦‍♀️ RAM is so cheap for Apple, just have all units start with 32GB. In Aus, (Apple) RAM upgrades are very expensive.

So now a thief can just walk around with iPhone and check for AirTag signal to see if there's anything worth stealing?

The fact that Apple charges these prices and still ships with base 256GB of memory. Or charges these price differences for storage upgrades, which is cheap, tells you all you need to know about them and their values.

Many Americans have bellies bigger than 27” 🤪 I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to accomodate an LCD.
Try putting the printer in the linen press and connect up over WIFI thats gona save about 45cm of desk space.

Kinda my point. Like why not a plain black/gray color with black bezels. There is no place in my house that would not scream look at me I'm a Mac.
I would have thought it’s because they’re saving the boring/corporate colours for the iMac Pro which will come in larger sizes and be the black/white/grey we’re all used to. It’s not forcing an agenda it’s just filling up their lineup gradually, in the same way they are with the laptop line.

People who hate colourful computers should hold off for a little while.

Well, you just listed a bunch of moveable objects as a reason to buy a smaller computer. So thanks for proving my point...?

I once lived in a 200 sq ft apartment and at the time I had a 21” CRT which was the biggest you can get and weighed about 3 tonnes. Quite the behemoth in that small place. But the last thought on my mind would’ve been ”I need a smaller monitor”.

Vast screen real estate that can hold every tool panel of Photoshop or Logic and still leave plenty of room for your actual document is everything. Without it a computer is just a toy. The kind of toy that Apple turned the MBP into when they discontinued the 17” and left us with the dinky 15.6”. Mine quickly became a desktop that’s plugged into a 27” screen at all times. On its own it’s useless for anything other than surfing or checking email. If my desk couldn’t hold at minimum a 27” screen I’d give up the bed and sleep on the couch if that made room for a bigger desk. Ergo the iMac 24” is a haaaaaaard pass.

You proved my point actually. You just demonstrated everyone have different priorities on what we need on the desk. Just because you need the largest possible display it doesn't mean everyone needs one. Everything on a desk is moveable, because that's how desktop objects work. I can do my work just fine with the setup that I have, and the other things are also necessary, just as much as my computer is.
