How about they change the name? Get rid of the “Air” moniker since it’s just silly at this point, not to mention confusing for new buyers.

Not too sure which chip the Pro will be getting. If the iPad Pro does get the M4, then the Air is likely to get M3.

M4 on Pro models, I think it’s true. There have been too many flops for Apple lately. Now, they are on the verge of missing the AI train due to them sticking to their ridiculous AR/VR hype which is not providing value for anyone.

They need to get in on the game and they need had it done yesterday. They are no longer hot in any area. Showing off the M4 so soon after the M3 release and put AI marketing on it will lead masses to believe they haven’t lost their touch, rather they are churning out new products.

Folks that recently bought the M3 might be salty: phones, MacBook's, the desktops, the AI innovation seem to be much bigger than switching to ARM in terms of making some of the hardware obsolete.

the switch to M1 will still be bigger, the AI innovation just for 2024 will be small and not all in. so expect AI to take 2-3 years for Apple to do something very useful

i suspect it will completely revolutionize how we interact with computers.

ai will most likely fundamentally change how we interact with computers. it will be far more than some small insert into the os. they will probably reimagine what a computer os is and it will take more than three years.

So no AI for the Air? Somehow all this M4 discussion doesn't make sense to me. It would also stop many people buying a Mac with an outdated SoC. And in the fall we get the M5? 6 month cycle?

There isn't even a killer AI app available yet. But unfortunately AI will be a big reason for apple to discontinue older apple silicon chips for upcoming OS's.

Gurman is full of 💩

Using vague language such as "there's a strong possibility" less than 10 days before the launch means he's got ZERO actual information on this.

They said the same a decade ago when tablets were on the rise. And 10 years later people still buy Macs.

Will people be disappointed if Mark Gurmans M4 predictions are wrong? Does the Pro and the Air need different SoC then the base M3?
I would have called BS on this rumour, except it is specific and widespread enough that if it is not true, Apple would have leaked a denial at this point. So I’m inclined to believe it, unless there are strong denial rumours within the next couple of days.

Although John Gruber seems not to, his wording doesn’t seem like a guided rumour control, more like he legitimately doesn’t know.

I wonder how many iPad users feel the CPU is problematic in any way. It seems to me that software is in most cases. For pretty much anything I want to do on the mac, there are plenty of well supported, often open source options. On the iPad, I see subscription based apps that interact poorly between each other or with the cloud that they crucially depend on. While this does not change, I do not understand the hype here. Why should I care the next gen gets M3 or M4 ?
It’s “AI” man! All hail the fake ai overlords. It will give you a 4 hr work day, and a 4 day work week. So you spend more time with your famil…. I mean Vision Pro!
Basically the new M4 chip will streamline the cultivation of bugs -> protein and solve world hunger. It will also recycle your battery and there will be no more rare mineral mining!
You deserve some of that credit too! For buying Apple and consenting to AI :D

Don't think Apple would use the iPad Pro as the "flagship" AI device, since it's a rather niche product.

Apple could update the chip to M4 within a year too.

If the May '24 iPads Pro indeed get M4 then there has to be some weird beating around the AI bush to avoid killing most of the WWDC '24 and iPhone 16 hype.

Actually, they might not even do that and instead tease "upcoming AI features" for iPadOS 18 that only iPads Pro M4 and newer will support.

But that doesn't help Apple's efforts incentivizing sales of M2 iPads Air. Even an M3 iPad Air is kinda hard to sell right next to an M4 iPad Pro if M3 and older is getting barred from all the upcoming AI stuff.

Selling a M3 or older iPad next to an M4 iPad Pro would require a lot more value/$ in the M2/M3 iPads Air, much more than the regular SoC and spec bumps we've seen in the past. Unless "Apple AI" isn't as exclusive to A18/M4 as one would assume and older devices get a lot of it too.

But I just can't see Apple being generous with AI for M3 and older devices.

"AI" as a consumer trend hasn't seen the likes in more than a decade, and Apple not utilizing it to get everyone to ditch their perfectly powerful devices for A18/M4 ones doesn't make sense.

If this new iPad had an M4, this would be an instant buy for me. If not, I'll wait until next year, even though I still work with a 2018 iPad Pro (which is still amazing).

The point is Apple is not intending for the iPad to replace the MacBook (I don’t know where people got that idea from), instead to complement the MacBook. (Or be an alternative for people who don’t want a traditional desktop OS computer in the first place.)
I didn’t realize I was talking to Tim Cook himself … I was just expressing my humble desire as one of your loyal customers for over 30 years and having the frustration to have to switch from one machine to another to be productive … Common sense and full wallet is what got us the idea from Bro …

Has Apple ever released its fastest chip first in the iPads before?
Apple has been very inconsistent on this. With M1 and M2, they introduced them on lower Macs first. With M3, they introduced them in the high level laptops first and didn’t put them in their lower machines until much later. With inconsistency like this, it wouldn’t surprise me if the M4 came out in iPad Pros first.

If Apple wants to focus on AI, they’re going to need the M4 since the M3 doesn’t cut it with the M4 having a rumored dramatically improved neural engine. I wouldn’t look for huge improvements in CPU/GPU scores, but I’m going to bet the M4 neural engine is going to be the focus.

So I guess the only way they can sell iPads is to deliberately hold the Macs behind a generation?

That’s kind of sad.

Yeah this is the reason this M4 on iPads doesn't make sense... I think they prefer to sacrifice the new upcoming iPad line still with boring M3 chips (less AI capable), than going full in M4 and removing a huge chunk of sales on Macs that were just released with M3...
