Apple Event Sept 2021: iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7, and More Announced

I think this event could have been done a lot better.

There were some iPhone features, like Smart HDR 4, that were not even mentioned. They didn’t discuss iOS 15 at all. I think the iPhones could have gotten more time.

They spent a lot of time on services (Apple TV+ and Fitness+). Fitness+ ties in with Apple Watch, so I understand why it was there, but Apple TV+ seemed like it was stuck in because they wanted a mention. And they didn’t use that time well. They could have shown another trailer for the Foundation series, which premieres in just a few days. Instead, all they the did was show a montage of shots from various shows, which we’ve seen before.

Overall, I give the event a B. It was competent but uninspired.

Crickets instead of justification would not indicate the behavior of sheep. Imagine joint a forum just to spew negativity on how another person chooses to spend their money. It screams of insecurity and cognitive dissonance for your own purchase
Nah, I couldn't be happier that I sold my 12 Pro Max, gave my wife my 5th gen Mini, and bought the Z Fold 3. It's okay if you are salty after today. I don't blame you one bit! People dropping hundreds of dollars on a phone with essentially the same design it had in 2017 and a hidious notch does remind me of a mammal that produces wool though!!

Anyone let down by apple's choice not to license California Dreamin' as the theme song instead of using whatever that garbage music they opted for?

Well I guess using The 5th Dimension -- California Soul likely they got permission vs the Beath Boys Calif Dreaming which would have cost a lot more.
The fact that you think "California Dreaming" is the from the "Beath Boys" tells me you don't really know what you're talking about

Anyway, apple tried to be cute and called the event "California streaming". Whoever blue shield hired to do their ads did a masterful rendition of California Dreaming' not too long ago

The Eagles "Hotel California"
"You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave!"
(The lyric feels fitting for those ticked off and wanna go to Samsung, Android after today
...sorry.)

*And no I'm not leaving Apple, but not upgrading to this 13.

Anyway, no way would Don Henley approve this song for a massive corporation.

Seriously underwhelming event. Anyone else?

I'm hoping that the underwhelming nature of this event will be outdone with the spectacular announcements of the M1X/M2 MBPs next month....Then, we will be back at balance: 1 extreme followed by another extreme.

I see the frivolous complaining about the Series 3 still remaining. The fact that Apple is still allowing updates actually shows the longevity of their product, and I’d wager most consumers just don’t have that kind of money to upgrade to the latest Apple Watch, and/or they don’t see the value in the latest models.
Especially with the S7 announcement. A 1 mm bigger display? Really?!??!

Massive let down. I'm sure by tomorrow if I want any new exclusive 7 watch faces, I can find them on Clockology (I know darn well someone is working on this right now :)

I didn't have time earlier to examine Apple's selection, but Calif Soul was a funk-soul tune written by Ashford & Simpson (1967), that several artists used. But the best version is by Marlena Shaw - 1968

Wow. Today was so underwhelming.

I skipped the Watch 6 because it was so incremental. Looks like the 7 is exactly the same. It's even incremental when coming from the series 5.

A small amount of extra screen real estate and the same battery life in the same dated shape was exactly what I wasn't looking for in my new Watch.

And don't get me started on the 13 Pro Max. 11% more battery! Rack focus video! Pass.

Looks like I am staying on the 12 Pro Max and my series 5 Watch until next time.

Apple seems like they are out of ideas. I wish they weren't. I am a huge fan, but I'm also not a fool with my money.

Today's presentation and upgrade features were pathetic everywhere you look at it.
Zero exciting.
It is not about complaining. It is that the only thing lately Apple is feeling comfortable is about milking products forever with minimal internal upgrades.
That has ALWAYS been Apple's comfort zone: iterative upgrades after bomb drops.

That's what keeps these things exciting for me, even if sometimes I don't want anything they're selling:

We never know what we're going to get, but we don't want to miss that bomb drop.

Expectations are the thieves of joy, as they say, so I try to keep mine low despite being here on a daily basis.

But it sounds like Apple hasn't been "doing it for you" for a while, so why bother to look at them at all?

These are all mature products.

The way I see it is that they're more targeted for incoming customers and for those that actually use the power features enough to justify upgrading. Fitness nuts WILL want to upgrade their Watch, even if they probably won't NEED to.

I barely use my (work-issued) iPhone 12's power. But that means that when I (re)entered the ecosystem, I got both a good value and a device that will serve my needs for a LONG time.

So this time, it's Christmas for iPad mini fans who wanted the Air/Pro features in the mini size, and for first-time Watch users like myself (well, the wife really).

My Christmas came last Spring with the M1, 16GB RAM iPad Pro 12.9", after waiting TEN YEARS for the iPad (and the rest of the ecosystem and supporting technologies) to be up to snuff to replace my Macs' use-cases.

But I don't expect to upgrade/replace those devices for YEARS.

So I just watch (no pun intended) these events, and wait to see if I need or want anything. But there is PLENTY new here, and I think it's INSANE that Apple has something new to add EVERY year.

Really disappointing event, in all regards.

And of course no word on their scanning „feature“. I did not really expect it, but a responsible company should have talked about it after the backlash they got.

IMO really embarrassing was the part on „privacy“… iPhone is built on privacy, could not stop laughing.

This is a fair critique (except for the wool part). The Z-Fold is a groovy phone.

But the deal is, the thing that keeps iPhone users on iPhone, is not the iPhone itself at all:

It's the ecosystem integration and ease of use. In other words, everything that Apple adds to the iPhone is just gravy on top. It already does what you need it to.

Unless it doesn't. You need (want?) your phone to fold. Boom, you're out of here, and right to do so. Be happy.

To me, phones and computing devices today are like cars. Regardless of brand, they all have wheels, brakes, lights, steering wheels, A/C, sound systems, etc. They all do their fundamental job of getting you from point A to B and back.

But meaningful innovations come at a smaller, slower pace, things like vented/heated/cooled seats, auto braking, self-parking, speed sensitive volume controls...

However, it sounds like some of you want a flying car already. But it cannot just fly, it has to be fast. But not prop plane fast, fighter-jet fast. And It cannot just fly, but go into space. But not just go into space, but have artificial gravity.

And we want it, ALL of it, NOW.

IT seems that very sadly, Apple made you have low expectations...
That is sad indeed.

Before we used to be excited of presentations, now I do not even look at them. They are a waste of time.

Because of people complaining, Apple actually change the design of the Macbook Pro after a massive failure design. THey still insisted for over 3 years, but less and less people were buying them. If we speak, they will listen. If you have low expectations, they will only conform the masses with sad upgrades...

You just proved my point. Good day sir
