The iPad is going to be a "pro" device if the software makers get their act together.
Not just Apple but everyone.

Everyone talks how this is not pro. Well if the apps are just a ghost of what their OS X counterparts are its never going to be "pro".

But the software is going in the direction. Its just very slow. And Apple is rolling it very slow too it almost looks like they do it on purpose.

And by that I dont mean put OSX on the ipad!!!!!!!!!

That just as dumb, never going to happen, they wont redesign OS X. And they sure as hell wont get all 3rd party software to behave nicely with touch. (There you have the windows problem)

Apple took it from another side. They slowly make iOS powerful and dont try to force Desktop with touch.

The hardware at this point is on a kind of high. More processing? Thats surely coming but with no "pro" apps using fully whats in there what should be more pro about the hardware?

You have a "pro" display for colors
you have a "pro" pencil for notes and artwork
you have a "pro" keyboard for the tippers (well, if you like to write on it lets say)

Sure, the ipad isnt going to be used as a statistical number crunching machine any time soon.

The next couple iOS releases 10,11,12 might include stuff like

- multiple user accounts not just for eduction use, they will bring better business user account managing
maybe for the consumer its coming then too
- Open in... Will get an update. Maybe even change default apps but the way its now its too clunky and I think Apple knows it.

I dont think the file system is coming any time soon and maybe it wont be needed if they pull it of right. Even for "pro" stuff.

I'm not sure if this is still the case where Dell machines are for the general public and then they have the XPS and no expense spared Alienware. Why couldn't Apple continue doing what they're doing but market their Pro as Alienware-like alternative. That means no expense spared: latest USB, SSD, TouchID, best camera, all the specs that are currently available to Android etc. I really wonder what the incremental cost would be for the "latest and greatest" etc. I'm sure if it added another 20% more there would still be a strong subset of consumers like the Macrumors crowd that would pay for it.

9.7-inch iPad Pro USB 2 Transfer Speeds
- According to the product description for the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is able to transfer data at USB 3 speeds, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro can only transfer data at USB 2 speeds. That implies the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is not using the same Lightning port as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which has a Lightning port able to support USB 3.0 transfer speeds.

This is pretty misleading. USB 2 speeds are only when transferring data over the camera adapter to the 9.7 iPad pro . When the iPad is directly connected to a computer it will be at USB 3 speeds.

My guess would be that the 9.7 has a different USB host controller than the larger pro.

There isn't any product that Apple ships that doesn't make it seem like they are trying to squeeze money out of their customers. There's always some low spec that it's ridiculous to include in a modern device, some obvious feature that other devices in its class have but that you can't have no matter how much you pay, or some expensive adapter you have to buy to actually use the darn thing or get basic connectivity with other devices.

They keep making things thinner and thinner and use this as an excuse for having subpar features and getting people to buy adapters. I realize Apple is a company and that they have to make money. But do they have to do so in a way that is so blatantly disrespectful to their legacy and to their customers?

They seem more focused on the short term profits now, where as they used to think long term.

Reading the comments here people aren't happy and in the long term that means less customer loyalty, less enthusiasm for their products, less sales etc. How ever on the plus side they'll make more money per product.

Such a shame that a once great company is on the decline already. They're still miles ahead of most other companies but if they keep up like this it's a slow downward slope.

Can't believe the discrepancies in product lines. No consistency. Come on apple, stop looking at the money as the driving factor. And before anyone says they're a business thats what they do. First that doesn't mean its what you have to do, second it's not what Steve cared about, he wanted to make something great, the money was a bonus. Third, the money comes from making great products and putting customers first, it's what builds the loyalty in the first place.

12.9" iPad Pro has USB 3 transfer speeds but no ambient sensor
9.7" iPad Pro has ambient sensor but USB 2 transfer speeds
iPhone 6s has 3D Touch but camera protrudes
iPhone SE has no 3D Touch but camera is flush

I'm sure there are many more discrepancies. Wtf is going on, Apple?

It's called diversity.

This feels like they just wanted to up the price of iPad Air so they called it "pro" for this update cycle.
Yup, I can almost guess that Apple may pull another iPad 3 with the iPP 9.7 first gen... Like a 'surprise' Fall update this year that puts a faster USB 3.0 interface and an A10 update...
The iPP 9.7 seems like a half-baked release and I suspect that Apple originally meant for it to be released with the iPP 12.9 last year but held back due to screen or 16nm SOC shortages...

It's called making compromises to ensure profit margin stays where they want it to. Additionally they probably have done extensive research to determine what sacrifices buyers are likely willing to make based on certain price points. Every successful business does the same.

At C$1,000 for a 128GB WiFi I won't touch any versions of it with a 10-foot pole. Apple has lost their mind with pricing.

I honestly have no clue why anyone would want a larger iPhone. My iPhone is on eBay now so I can get the SE.
If use the maps app for navigation the larger screen allows you to focus on the road more instead of trying to zoom in on the small screen of directions. If you travel often on planes and like to do some reading or watch videos or movies then the larger screen is better. If you just make phone calls and want something small to put in your pocket then the new smaller iPhone will be perfect for you. There is a market for each smartphone out there. Different people have different uses for their iPhones.

Yep, but at least I noted Tim Cook's comments about so many people still using 5+ year old Windows PCs. I think that's the only justification for such comments, really. If you're such a casual user, you're still happy with some 5, 6 or even 7 year old Windows computer, you'd find the iPad Pro a more capable alternative and could just switch to that.

any one else chuckled when they said iPad pro a PC replacement

Has anyone mentioned how disgusting it is Apple have STILL(!!!!) not localised the Smart Keyboard. I live in the UK, I'm not buying an iPad Pro until the god damn extra-cost Smart Keyboard has £ and not $!
