What was the point of the current radical new Mac Pro design if they have a new smaller design in the works? Seems like a lot of wasted engineering resources for a short lived product unless they will have 2 different models of Mac Pro?
A cheaper, modular Mac? Which is what an awful lot of people claim to want Them to make.

Why not have two models? Their iPhone lineup now has lots of models at varying price points.

The theories are all very interesting but also very confusing... Apple have just got the laptop lineup back in to a very logical, simple & cohesive place. Are they going to go and screw it all up again?

If it was just the Air going to Apple Silicon just that would make perfect sense wouldn’t it? The Air is the default mac for most people these days so battery life trumps performance. Most buyers don’t care if there’s a new one coming next month or next year, let alone what’s inside It.

But then some MBPs transitioning, but not all of them?

Can’t wait to see what they do.
My thoughts exactly - really is exciting times!

Agreed. But many were expecting an all new form factor with the Apple silicon machines. Gurman is saying these will still be in the current ones, which presumably wouldn’t need 80+ Watts of cooling for the CPU/GPU in the 16”. 🤔
I have an MBP16 and it might be argued that the cooling is sometimes inadequate for the Intel CPU / AMD GPU combo, but would work very well for a 50-60W Apple Silicon SoC with lots of CPU/GPU cores.

I'm curious to see what the graphics performance will be like for the air and the 13 inch. The 16 inch will probably continue to use discrete graphics from AMD but the other two machines have used the intel Iris architecture that is embedded in the CPU up until now. Does that mean apple developed it's own graphics solution in house?
Maybe...but that would mean that the Apple chip would have to communicate with the AMD chipset. Given that there is a possibility of the Apple Silicon 16 inch, I doubt that would be enough time to architect that...but I could be wrong. my guess is that the Apple chip is powerful enough to have the graphics built into it.

I would like to see a good quality webcam, a touch screen with minimal borders and a built in 4G/5G/LTE whatnot modem with sim-card slot.

And as everybody is referring Apple silicon with AS i would like to point out that the whole damn thing is propably going to be soldered again from top to bottom and therefore non serviceable by user... so should we call it the Apple Soldered Silicon aka... (i am not going to write it here)

Bring back the MacBook 12"!!! Perfect time.
I think that ship has sailed unfortunately. Where would a 12” fit alongside the 13” Air and the 11” iPad Air & Pro?

Unless there’s a smaller form factor with smaller bezels.... but the rumours are saying no re-design.

So who knows! 😃

Can't wait until people get these in hand so we can see the true performance, and everyone can stop speculating.

That being said, you couldn't pay me to buy a first gen version of one of these. Too many unanswered questions, especially re: reliability and third party software support that can't be answered until people actually start using them in the wild.

In the market for a new computer. Trying to decide between a MacBook pro or an iMac... don't really take my laptop anywhere very often, as I have an iPhone and iPad.

I bought the 2015 MBP, which seemed ancient almost as soon as I bought it, thanks to its outdated Thunderbolt ports that I've found virtually no accessories for. I'm overdue for an upgrade.

BTW, would be interesting see a poll....

If Apple announce that the current MacBooks are all going to stay the same, apart from switching to Apple Silicon internals, who here would buy them given we expect a full re-design within the next 12 months?

You mean for the past 4 years.

And for the past 4 years, they've probably been using those same form factors with Apple Silicon chips, for testing purposes. Meaning, they've been designed for Apple Silicon, all along.

The current MacBook design started with the Air back in 2008...all the current laptops are minor variations on the theme. But the timeline isn't really important...either way, they're not fresh designs.

And I'm sure the computers will run fine, but we have no idea what developer are going to do—for all we know, we could be stuck running programs in emulation for years. An exciting redesign would get a lot more people to take that risk.

I sure hope so. Last thing I want is a thicker accessible laptop just so a few people can get inside.

And no, there will be no touch screen.

So a built in keyboard to an iPad Pro...
;)
No really it’s exciting, I am hopeful they can run them without fans.
A sealed unit with 3 options
1 TB/ 64 gigs ram $1500
2 TB/ 128 gigs ram $2500
4 TB/ 256 gigs ram $3200
Boom
Wonder if they will have usbc / thunderbolt 4
No idea if the CPU/GPU will be different options, they aren’t in the different iPads

I agree with others though, no new design will be a big disappointment and kinda surprising if Apple don’t want to make a big show of the new era.
When Apple transitioned from PPC to Intel, the first product to get the Intel CPU was the 15" MBP. It didn't get a redesign. The redesigned models came after that. There's nothing stopping Apple from doing the same with the initial Apple Silicon Macs.

16" still seems unlikely, at least with Apple Silicon. I do believe, especially with the recent Boot Camp leak, that we'll see that final Intel version. But I wouldn't be shocked to see a casual announcement of a 10th Gen Intel 16" MacBook Pro, followed by a "now, for our first machine with our silicon" type of announcement for the 13" Macs.

No 13” to start with - there are two 13” MBP models at the moment, 8th gen Intel Processors and 10th gen. The 10th gen will still be the top end 13” MBP, then entry level 8th gen will be replaced with AS.

Next year the 14” MBP will replace the 10th Gen Intel models. I suspect the entry level 13” MBP with AS will stay around as a cheaper option like it currently is.
Uh? This does not make any sense. The A14 is already as fast as the top of the line current MacBook Pro 13”. And that’s a phone SOC.

How can you keep the Intel as the top end when basically Apple could just literally take the same processor in the iPhone, clock it a bit higher and make a faster laptop?

Apple has repeatedly stated that the new Macs will use their proprietary GPUs based on their mobile technology. For graphics, Apple GPUs currently have a commanding lead over AMD and Nvidia in performance per watt, so if Apple builds a bigger GPU it should easily deliver mid-range performance at much lower power consumption.
