I think that ship has sailed unfortunately. Where would a 12” fit alongside the 13” Air and the 11” iPad Air & Pro?

Unless there’s a smaller form factor with smaller bezels.... but the rumours are saying no re-design.

So who knows! 😃
Can the ipad use 2 extended displays and can I use terminal, python, java etc on it? No. And the air is just too big. Give me something under a kg, like every other manufacturer. It's 2020 ffs, if they can't pull this off with the new chips, they should just close the mac business.

I love the 12” Macbook - it’s the only truly ultra-portable Mac you can carry anywhere and not realise you’re carrying it. I’d love them to do a new version, but I don’t know where it fits in to their current lineup and way of thinking.

Unless next year they go to a 12”, 14” & 16” lineup?

Apple Rule #1. never buy an Apple Gen 1 product.

Uh, no. I've bought plenty of Gen 1 products, and in fact, the reason Apple still exists is because it's done its 1st gen products well.

What 1st gen products? I remember buying the iPhone 1, Apple Watch Series 0, iPod Firewire, MBP Retina 1st gen, iBook, MacBook Air, various flat screen iMacs, iPad 1, iPad Pro 12.9. They are, for the most part, great. It's tech, so their capabilities get superseded eventually. If you can't deal with that you need to get out of the tech space.

I am very sceptical about the 16" with AS... I bet there was an error in "translation" somewhere. We will most likely see a new 16" with Intel CPUs and maybe updated AMD graphics.

Well, in single-core, the iPhone is already on par or beating anything Intel or AMD can offer. A 8-core A14 with slightly higher clocks will handily outperform any i9 at a much lower power consumption.
What in geek bench?? A synthetic benchmark ported to the iPhone?

How about some real tests like rendering video from Finalcut. I think people are thinking Apple is going to bring some dark magic.

These chips will be bigger than the iPhone/iPad versions to give you more power. This will produce more heat and require more power. I am not saying they can’t do it but there has to be some trade offs.

They are not going to deliver a new fanless 16inch more powerful than the Intel version with all day battery life.

It's actually a very smart move. I am surprised as well, though. But it makes sense, first iteration they will not want that many people on board to iron out the kinks, and then for the second gen they will be ready for the wave of people who want one. Also, this way they already have their next MacBook Pro lined up, which eases some of the pressure to come out with yet another wow factor design soon after this one.
When has Apple ever marketed a new product "with not many people on board to iron out the kinks"?

I have an MBP16 and it might be argued that the cooling is sometimes inadequate for the Intel CPU / AMD GPU combo, but would work very well for a 50-60W Apple Silicon SoC with lots of CPU/GPU cores.
Agreed but I don’t think Apple will be introducing a 50-60W SoC yet; I think that’s probably a next year thing.

I will be a little surprised if the new 16” is ASi. I’m thinking they’ll refresh the 16” with newer Intel/etc parts, and introduce a new 13” Air-or-MBP with the new ASi. Go after something that currently has integrated graphics. The 16” will need native Apple graphics that equal or exceed the performance of the dedicated GPUs. Maybe they can do that now - I’ll be thrilled if that’s what they release - but I’m guessing the report was that there would be new 13” and 16” machines and the ASi applies to some of them, and that got muddled to all of them having ASi chips.

The fact that they can already transition the 16-inch to Apple Silicon is honestly impressive.

Yes and no. The A12X is pretty darn impressive and is what... 2+ years old at this point - and fits in an IPAD.

The new version will be on a more advanced manufacturing process, likely have active cooling and more power budget.

It's honestly only (so) "impressive" in context because intel have been mostly stagnant for a decade, and AMD were lost in the wilderness for 4-5 years. intel's recent typical 5% performance boost per year on some contrived benchmarks where they can use new task-specific instructions in the same or worse thermal/power budget has been the reality for intel since around 2013.

That said, I can't wait for the new machines - I'm expecting large leaps in performance in the coming years because intel really has been holding the market back for almost a decade now.

If intel had actually been making the same sort of progress they were in previous decades for the past 10 years, the new Apple parts are roughly where intel would have been 2-3 years ago IMHO. But right now intel are lost. They're full of management problems.

I’d love a 12”, it’s perfect for airplane tray tables. There’s no question they could make it—the previous model was
around 2 lbs (0.9 kg)—but will they?

I sure hope so, it could simply be another size of MacBook Air. I think a 12/13 Air and a 14/16 Pro would be great lineup. Or make the 12” a Pro, so 12/14/16” MBP along with the 13” Air.

The other poster’s comment about iPad isn’t really relevant to Macs.

14 Air: VolksNotebook, 14 Pro: for milder compute needs aka the developer machine (and please get rid of the touchbar) 16: premium performance aka the graphics machine 12: premium portable.

I’d be disappointed if they don’t reveal a new MB 12. That was a beautiful machine, just let down by a very poor cpu. Mind you, if they did too good a job with it then people might not buy the 12.9 iPad Pro. Tough choice!
I agree. An MB12-AS w/ an updated keyboard would be the ultimate in portability. A light-weight, fan-less design running Mac OS would eliminate some of the tough compromises w/ an iPad.

They need to completely reform the MacBook. iPhones and iPads emerged with thunderous applause, throwing out clamshells, which were standard practice in those times, in favor of smart tablets. Having to use my 2019 MBP seems antiquated. It's more of a chore than anything. I had to purchase it because my school's web-based LMS favors desktop interfaces over mobile.

It’ll be interesting to see. No interest in buying one though. I enjoy the current 16” mbp. AS makes any new one a massive downgrade.

Exactly, and for the love of God give the thing a second USB-C port. There’s room on the chassis and no it won’t cannibalize Air sales.
I hope they do bring us a 12” MacBook (Air), but it would cannibalize the Air—which Apple couldn’t care less about. If they think there’s enough demand, they’ll make it.

I could see this happening, but it’s really a beta program that people will pay enormous amounts of money to be part of. That is, if there’s no design change. The good news is I’m not going to expect anything now.

Needless to say, this would not be for everyone.
