I'm waiting for integration with Amazon Music HD, for improvement to the incident reporting, and top see the speed limit of the road before I move from Waze.

Waze has been the best for years IMO.

It’s nice not being so reliant on Google services and being able to keep as much data off Google’s platform as possible.

Apple Maps Product Lead David Dorn and Design Lead Meg Frost recently did an interview with CNN to explain the Apple Maps features that were introduced with the iOS 15 update and to explain why iPhone users should choose Apple Maps over other mapping apps like Google and Waze.

According to Dorn, there are three major reasons why Apple Maps is the best choice.
  1. Apple is making serious investments into Maps to improve it.
  2. Privacy is central and Apple isn't tracking your location for data purposes when you use Apple Maps.
  3. Maps is part of the Apple ecosystem and integrates well with other Apple devices and services.
Apple's effort into improving the Maps app can be seen in iOS 15, an update that added new 3D city details in select areas like London, New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. There are also navigation updates that add more detail at complex interchanges. Frost said that Apple wanted to make maps "both safer and visually satisfying to navigate."

As for the 3D landmarks added in the update, each landmark is created by hand. "We pick the amount of detail we find appropriate and create a 3D mesh of the building landmark itself. And we apply it to the base map," Frost told CNN.

The full Apple Maps interview can be read over on CNN's website, and it provides more detail on features like Share ETA, CarPlay, real-time AR walking directions, and more.

I’d agree. I deleted Waze and Google Maps over a year ago.

Just please give biking roads worldwide already! you can happily use my data to make while I am riding!

1) Serious investment means it obviously needs it & still nowhere as widespread as Google - see lookaround for reference, this should be 3/4 of the world by now based on Google’s rollout.
2) Course they track you when using maps to “improve the quality of their service” & to update traffic conditions, they maybe don’t share it, but track you they do.
3) Obviously it’s integrated as per Google/Waze

Not showstopping reasons to solely use apple maps (altho I do) how much do these folk get paid??

I love the Map's UI, but it will sometimes take me to the wrong location or the destination is slightly off.

What they don't have is the google maps feature that dwarfs the differences: they don't allow me to download local maps to my phone. This way I can get navigation to places where there is bad cell coverage. I don't understand why they don't include that function.

I use Apple maps around town and it’s fine. Mainly cause I don’t like Google tracking me.

But for a long road trip I download Google.

LOL. What are you smoking Apple?
There’s one reason I use Google Maps: better local destinations and routing.

I don’t care how many investment Apple made to Apple Maps. If it doesn’t list local destinations and routing, it’s useless.

Apple, you talked big about investments, yet you practically ignored my country, the largest market in SE Asia.

I prefer Apple Maps interface for driving. macOS app is nice. But search sucks. Google finds things like parks, trailhead, other POIs and Apple just doesn't know about them. Privacy shouldn't be the issue.

Haven't tried Waze in years. Was fun to see neighborhoods I wouldn't see otherwise, but at the cost of an unprotected left turn across traffic. And waiting for a clear spot gave up the 30 sec. that was going to be saved. Not that Apple Maps doesn't avoid unprotected left turns.

The wide range of opinions seen here can be explained by the location of the reviewer.

In Toronto, Apple Maps has been incredible and possibly even superior to Google Maps from early on. Flyover and LookAround took it beyond Google Maps. They’re so much better than Google’s satellite view and clumsy stitching and janky travel in StreetView.

But a Map is nothing without accuracy and if you’re in a city with poor map data, then of course it’s a non starter. For those lucky enough to live in cities with regular map data updates, then Apple Maps can seriously be seen as better than Google Maps.

I use Apple Maps for driving in the USA. the interface and appearance are far more readable, and the voice isn't as annoying as other map programs. However, in Asia and less developed countries, Google Maps still seems better.

I use Google Maps FOR the continuous tracking. It’s like a diary that writes itself, it’s fun to revisit where you were, especially on holiday. If Apple Maps had this feature I’d switch instantly.

I left Google maps years ago and don’t miss them one bit. Apple Maps works perfectly with my Apple Watch too, so I don’t have to take my eyes off the road.

Did not you read MR today? People trust Google with their data more than they do Apple. So being reliant on Google service is a good thin. Besides it's a really good service. It'll find anything you need to find, tell you when the establishment is open, when it is crowded, when was the last time you visited it, reviewes and photos etc. And everything is up to date.
