In London, U.K. Apple Maps is still inferior to Google Maps - I just looked and had to report 3 location errors for businesses in a 10min walk from me. One was 3 miles from where it should be - it used the street number to place it near me even though postcode was correct so it should be placed miles away.

I’m, admittedly, quite the Apple fanboy, but Maps is absolutely useless if you live outside of the US.

Having said that, Google Maps is also completely useless for navigation in the country I live.

Edit: I thought of one thing I’ve actually used Apple Maps for — the parked car feature.

It still often directs me to turn into the sides of buildings or drive on railroad tracks. I'd be happy to use it if it would stop trying to kill me...

They use junk TomTom data for traffic. Which is junk in the UK.

Waze is miles ahead for driving. It’s not even close.

*waits for Apple lovers who have never even visited the UK to downvote this comment…
And now imagine using apple maps in less i portant country for apple:) apple maps are no competition to google/waze, maybe us is exception and thats it

I used to prefer Google Maps but for sat nav Apple's directions are clearer, especially since they use traffic lights as reference points.

Also like the speed camera alerts.

Just need to fix the weird glitch where A roads are pronounced "Ah" instead of "Ay"
ie. it says Ah fifty seven instead of Ay fifty seven.

A roundabout was built down the road from me back in March of this year. Google Maps and Waze had their maps updated within 2 weeks. I submitted the change to Apple numerous times and as of today they still haven't updated the intersection. I want to like Apple Maps but they make it really hard.
That's not my experience in the UK. A new intersection was mapped the day it opened. I would have been lost without it.

None of these features matter unless you live in one of these handpicked chosen one cities where Apple applies those features, and even then they are lackluster in practical use. Yes, flyover 3D and street view are nice, but congestion/crowdedness other than in traffic is vital, especially right now, as is a first-party reviews and photos system that has some actual quality and quantity data.
Don‘t get me wrong, I love the simplicity of Apple Maps (though its UI starts to annoy me quite a bit) but if you need real-time crowdsourced data and user feedback, then Google Maps will always have the lead.

Points 2 and 3 are great.

Point 1, well... good effort. But in my experience, in London (a major world city), Apple Maps is severely lacking compared to Google Maps.

The interface is great, the quality of aerial photos is great, the Look Around feature is great..... but there are just so many inaccuracies and so many missing labels compared to Google Maps. I have had countless experiences of Google Maps being better updated in terms of labels of businesses etc, shop opening hours, and navigation. I always do my best to retport these, but most of the time it's just quicker and easier to use Google Maps.

Can't even do simple things like multi-stop route planning and "set arrival time"!

And Waze is, in my experience, vastly superior for driving navigation.

A shame really. I'll keep fighting the good fight!
How is point 3 great?

"Because our non-competitive software lockout prevents you from using the others as easily".

Anyone in the UK have used it full time, how is it for you?

Apple Maps seems more US centric. I prefer the interface compared to Google Maps, but it has still got a lot of catching up to do.

I use apple maps. Unless it’s a long journey where traffic is likely to cause a disruption. Then I use google maps. The sheer numbers of people using Google maps and the data they collect gives far more accurate traffic information.

I like Apple Maps, but there is a couple of things that need to be done to make it better.
  • Ability to import List from Google maps
  • Add notes to places in "My Guides" *I hate adding a place and I forgetting why I added. This happens mostly with restaurants I see in a TV show
  • Add people to "My Guides" to collaborate *This would really help with family trips

As a workaround for your second remark: you can add Apple Maps locations nicely to Notes and write your comments there.

I understand it’s not what you want but I guess it’s how Apple wants you to use Maps ;-)

Apple Maps has that now. I get them popping up all the time. I think there are fewer user-reported hazards because there are way fewer Apple Maps users than users of Waze and Google Maps, but the feature is there.
I think this has likely been answered in the 9 pages since you asked Ha but if that info is there at all you have to have navigation running to see it. If I am going to add to the data or make use of it I will need access even when I’m not asking maps to guide me to a location. I know where I’m going around town but might have maps open for traffic info and certainly would for warnings ahead.

I use Maps all the time. I just wish we could add the one feature everyone uses Waze for and have it available without navigation.
Agree with you. It makes no sense. Has the alerts got any better? Last time I tried it, it was no where as good at alerting as Waze.

I think it’s a privacy thing. Wait until the police figure out these apps are tracking gps speed and that you are connected the Bluetooth in the vehicle registered to you and the car has identified you as the driver.
You don't think across the millions of cops who themselves use these programs, they haven't realized this??

I use Google Maps FOR the continuous tracking. It’s like a diary that writes itself, it’s fun to revisit where you were, especially on holiday. If Apple Maps had this feature I’d switch instantly.
Exactly. Part of why Google's products are better is they are gathering more and richer data by "spying" on their users.

Apple Maps is never up to date but as usual, Apple focuses too much on the US market only while Google does things internationally asap. Once in a while I try AM again but it never has the latest streets being closed due to construction sites etc and I end up in a dead end.

Exactly. Apple Maps (like Google) the mapping data from TomTom/TeleAtlas, still there's this significant delay in updates. In my experience the biggest changes, especially highways, usually appear within 3 months in my TomTom. Google follows and 6-12 months later Apple.
A few years ago I had a nice conversation with a TomTom/TeleAtlas technican and he told me that updates greatly relies on the local authorities. Where very big road constructions usually are announced way in advance, smaller ones are not. Some cities send out the changes very quick, some slow and/or incomplete. Some of the biggest cities can be very sloppy, so he said. It varies throughout Europe, and amazingly sometimes some of the poorest regions of Europe can be very accurate in reporting roadworks and some of the richest cities with enough manpower still very sloppy.

One thing I'm still waiting to see more progress on is: parking data. TomTom is developing a (street) parking data service for more than 8 years now, but so far it doesn't seem to be available for the general public.
Whenever you set a destination now in any navigation app or device, you usually get one or more suggestions for a parking nearby. But you'll have no guarantee that there is actually a free spot when you arrive. Wouldn't it be nice if you click on a parking suggestion that a spot will be reserved as soon as you get near? Maybe even automatically pay through Apple-pay afterwards?

[EDIT]
Apparently TomTom released a product a few months ago that offers "off-street parking" as part of live services. Haven't seen it in action yet.

I would absolutely love to use AppleMaps. Unfortunately, in my area, it still calculates the strangest routes, tells you to make U-turns if you don't follow the directions, and instead of recalculating a different route, AppleMaps will still try and get you back on the original route. The app is beautiful, but it's still not functional for me. I gave AppleMaps hundreds of chances (and still do) and in the end I end up frustrated and unsafely switching back to Waze while driving.

Great, now "mak[e] serious investments" in the podcast app and apple music app. They've actually gotta worse over the years. And since you're investing in maps then you can invest in other free services like podcasts.

I also prefer Apple Maps UI to those of Google and Waze, yet for me (in France) AM fall behind in all other aspects.

Earlier today I was searching for a client centre of the highway service and AM brought me to a dead end 1.6 km away from that place. Typed exactly the same search query into Waze and was where I was meant to be in 7 minutes.

I swapped to it after a lifetime of Google Maps, just to give it a try as I've moved away from Google's services. It's okay, it does the job. Have yet to find a situation where it's let me down.

Depends on where you are, but AM POI database in Europe is still awful.

Have never seen a police location on AM. Waze for the win.

Living in Belgium, AM is not the best to be used for navigation.
My experience with it using it through CarPlay is that there is terrible lag in car movement. It's especially noticeable when there are a lot consecutive turns. AM just can't keep up which results in taking the wrong street/exit.
Also the accuracy of the maps are not on par with GM. More often than not I already passed the side street only to see the car-pointer passing it on the screen 5 to 6 seconds later.
Google Maps is always on point.

When Apple rolls out the new Apple Maps in Belgium I will try it again. (but knowing Apple that won't be anytime soon)
