Cheering and celebrating. question is why did it take so long!

Looks like Tim Cook really doesn't mind mediocracy!

A recent test shows Siri is smarter than Alexa.

Some of you need to update your Siri is bad narrative.

I can’t believe how many people still claim that Alexa’s advantage is Skills failing to see that Shortcuts is Siri’s version. There are 30,000 Alexa skills. There are 2 million apps in the App Store. If just 1.5% of those update with Shortcuts support, Siri will surpass Alexa. Shortcuts has only been out for 4 months and hundreds of apps have already updated with Siri support.

People will keep pushing anti-Siri arguments indefinitely, even if those arguments are outdated and no longer valid.

I think people are placing too much emphasis on Alexa skills and Siri shortcuts. Don't get me wrong, they can be useful but they can only be so helpful especially since you need to have the foresight to set them up prior to using them. The only shortcut I've been using lately is 'Ok Google' to launch Google Assistant.

With Siri Shortcuts, it’s not so much to do with foresight but with habits. Things that’s I do repeatedly with apps eventually get recommended by Siri as Shortcuts.

For example, I have a few things I check off in Streaks every morning. Siri noticed and recommended Shortcuts. I accepted and they were set. Couldn’t be simpler. Now, when I wake up, as I’m walking around doing my usual routine, I can say: “Hey Siri, I made my bed” and she says “Done!” and the item is checked off in Streaks.

Another: Siri noticed that I take a power nap around 2pm most days. I usually set a 20 min alarm then open Headspace. Siri suggested a Shortcut. Now, as I’m about to lie down, I just say “Hey Siri, take a nap”, Headspace opens and runs a meditation and my timer is set for 20 minutes.

These are just a couple examples of the expansibility of Siri with Shortcuts. If you ask me, this is way more powerful than Alexa’s Skills and we’re only 4 months in.

I don't dismiss they're powerful or add value. I just don't find it adding that much value for myself outside specific niche cases.

Right now, I'm less likely to use Siri because more often than not she will be a disappointment and because I'm less likely to use Siri, I'm even less likely to use Shortcuts. If Siri could handle 95% of of what I asked just fine, and Shortcuts could handle the remaining 5% - that would be great. That's exactly how I used tasker on Android but that's just not the case with Siri.

The purpose of Shortcuts should be filling in the gaps of what Siri can't yet offer, but right now, there is a huge hole representing what Siri lacks and Shortcuts only fills that gap with a spoonful of water, when what you really need is a fire-hose.

Alexa isn’t much better, in fact, sometimes it’s worse. Ask Alexa “how cold is it right now?”. It’ll just give you the forecast for tomorrow.

At least Alexa can tell me when the sun will set on March 1st. Siri will tell you she doesn't know and will then provide today's sunset time even though she just acknowledged that you were not asking for that.

Alexa may be more versatile thanks to Amazon opening the door to developers to create ‘skills’ but I find here far from intelligent. I’m far more optimistic having Giannandrea and all of his experience from Google at the helm. The Google Assistant is miles ahead of everyone else and if he can bring even a portion of its performance to Siri, it’ll be a huge leap forward from where she stands now.
Just wait until Duplex comes out!

Siri...well my relationship with Siri is still a better love story than Bixby. :p

At least Samsung is keeping Bixby pretty focused on managing phone functions and leaving general information handling to Google. As I was telling friends on another part of the forum my husband asked Bixby for pictures of a wombat. It pulled up one of his selfies. Yeah, it’s just not meant for that sort of task yet.

What’s driving me crazy is when I try to talk to Siri on my iPhone, my husband’s HomePod insists on answering. I don’t know how to get that to stop, yet.

Yeah if they were a family, bixby would be the baby, Siri is the 5-7 year old and Alexa is the teenager. Google Assistant is the kid in college.

It simply can't be as smart a virtual assistant as Cortana, Alexa or Google Assistant and that's because Apple does not hold on to a user's personal data. If Apple stays with their philosophy and/or views about privacy, you can expect Siri to never be on par with others.

Alexa isn't smart, what are you talking about?

Oh, that's the best news I've heard all day! Hopefully, a new executive can bring about greater change than we've seen so far.

This should never happen when all you want Siri to do is "unpause the music":

Judging by the UI, that iPod is still on iOS 8 or iOS 7. Siri has gotten much better compared to 4 years ago. Works fine for me.

After iOS 12.1, Siri is dumber than ever. She does not listen except when I shout really loud. Does not understand what I say. Siri is losing the war.

"Siri, please play "Time to Say Goodbye" by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman."

"Serious improvements?" Seriously? Shortcuts are workarounds because the engine is deficient.

Siri still can't even reliably place calls to contacts, instead you get, 'Here's what I found on the web for XXX'. Voice recognition is right up there with Dragon Dictate circa 1993. 'hey siri' invariably turns into 'hold the home button', and on and on.

Siri needs a new pair of ears, and a better brain.
Yes, the phrase "serious improvements in 2018" stuck out as a very dumb statement. It's remained useless since it was first introduced, what 8 years ago?

then they shouldn't try because it's a waste of money and resources to make a ****** product that nobody likes or enjoys. frankly, it's an embarrassment.

There are basic things they can improve without collecting much more data.

Personally I would settle for Siri doing simple things like responding to "Call Dad" or "Resume Music" without needing an internet connection. It's infuriating when it can't do the simplest things without being connected. Surely it's not that hard to do the simple stuff "on device."

It’s infuriating when you’re getting home and ask Siri to “open the front door” and she doesn’t understand or sits there “communicating” for a minute while your hands are full.

That’s what they’re doing. Siri on HomePod is an entirely new Siri. It’s behind on features but is noticeably better at the basics: speech recognition and understanding what you’re asking.

I believe that Apple is testing and developing this new Siri on a low risk platform like the HomePod before putting it on their flagship devices.

Siri in HomePod is the same, it’s just always connected to WiFi so it’s a bit better. The HomePod may be the best speaker I have ever owned but knowing that it has an Uber powerful A10 and Siri is still so ****** in it is frustrating.

"Proceed to the route" The Apple Map fiasco has done Siri tremendous damage. Nothing more frustrating than having Siri direct you to the wrong place.

To me, "Siri" is a girl's name. This bugs me when I change Siri's voice to American English Male.

Why can't we give Siri a personal name? I'd much rather say "Hey, Bob" and get a male voice response.

I'd probably name Siri "Honey", though:

"Hey Honey, I'm home."
"Hey Honey, make some coffee."
"Hey Honey, shut up." (To mute what's playing.)

For us singles, this would be a nice extra ;)

Siri is the only assistant that sort of works across many languages better than Google, and when Amazon isn't even available.

I wouldn't say Siri is bad, but it is severely limited in the way Apple handle customer information with its privacy stand.

The fact that Apple went for a Google executive tells you something about that "Google's only advantage is that they spy on people and we have got our arms tied" motto.
Well things needed moving and they seem to be moving. Bring it on Siri.

Siri is something that Apple has just not paid attention to properly for about half a decade, until last year.

Cook has a super tough job that barely any of us could do even half as well as he does, but it was his responsibility & he took his eyes off it for too long.

Ditto services. Apple keeps on touting how important that they are in each of their quarterly calls but last I looked, iCloud feels like it’s still stuck in 2015.

I’m not one of those people who says that Cue has to go, but someone needs to start paying proper attention to those services.
