Makes sense, because we don't hold iPads with our hands. They just float in mid-air on their own in front of our faces.
Try this test: stand on the edge of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, take that's hand that's holding the iPad and use it to actuate Touch ID. Now tell us if you've determined that gravity is a constant.

Eventually Apple will give in and produce a touch-screen Mac. There's too much demand and it makes sense from a marketing perspective. They've done it before. Apple said there was no reason ever to change the screen size on the iPhone, that the 4s was optimally sized. Yet now we have various sizes because the market demanded it. They said using a stylus is a sign of failure. Yet now we have Apple Pencil.

A touch screen is inevitable, but I wouldn't expect it for a few years. And when it does come out, I'll probably disable it because I prefer keyboard and touch pad input. But I don't see why people are getting so sweaty over the possibility that a touch screen could appear. It's an alternative input device. If you don't want to use it, don't use it.

Um, yeah . . . But the Leaning Tower of Pisa only leans about four degrees, so not a problem. Let's take your example further and say I'm on a surface that really slopes, like 10 or 15 degrees, and I want to compute on it. Maybe while my aircraft is ascending. I've done it. Not a problem either.

No he’s at least partially right. What he says is exactly the reason why, for example, on iphone face id always requires to double press the side button to authorize payments with Apple Pay. Without that, there would be lots of accidental unwanted payments made. That’s an example of why, if face id ever makes it to the mac, it will need to have some 2nd factor authentication such as pressing a key or some other action.

After reading the post below, I see the original post in a different context. It make sense to enter a pin or have a second form of authentication for certain actions on a computer.

Alright, so "think about this stuff" some more. Face ID on iOS requires a hardware interaction — your double-pressing a physical button on the device — for certain sensitive actions, like Apple Pay payments and App Store purchases. Do you want your Mac automatically authorizing transactions for you just because you're in front of it? Can't realistically add a button in software, because then it's open to attack via other software — macOS allows apps to move the mouse cursor and simulating clicks.

Or, if you're going to have to move your hand to touch a physical button anyway…why not just keep Touch ID?

Do Macs really need Face ID when you can unlock with your watch ? Doesn't work with a phone obviously (as it's the phone that unlocks the watch) but having the phone (with face) unlock watch which unlocks Mac (when you pick it up) is quite delightful - I'd probably prefer it over my laptops camera turning itself on all the time to check faces.

I remember the days when Apple released the iPhone X and bragged about how FACE ID was more secure than TOUCH ID. It wasn’t about ergonomics or convenience in the least. The introduction of a notch on a laptop without the TrueDepth Camera is a colossal failure. I’m not buying a laptop with a notch unless it has this feature.

"more convenient on a laptop since your hands are already on the keyboard"

as if your face is anywhere but in front of the screen when you are using said laptop...

what a dumb excuse - plus if you are right handed your hand is likely on the mouse or trackpad when a Face ID prompt shows up, so it's actually less convenient to lift the hand and use the touch sensor.
It’s not like your hand is in the other room. It’s seriously right there. I’ve been using a TouchID MBA for a year and there’s never been a moment I thought it was inconvenient.

My iPad Pro won’t unlock at the distance I sit from my laptop. I wonder how much accuracy would decrease if you forced it to do that.

Also, the notch is a *lot* less in the way on a Mac than on a iPhone. It’s up in the menu bar in the center where there’s usually nothing anyway. The only app I‘ve used so far that tried to use that space was Xcode and it just moved a couple of menu items to the other side. It’s just not an issue for me. Unless you’re pathologically OCD, it won’t be an issue for you either.
