It is cheaper to upgrade base model to the same specs as the higher model.
At least it is true with the educational store.

Apple didn't do its due diligence well

I didn't check this, but if it is true then consider it an intelligent test for people in education :D

Anyone else annoyed this comes after they ordered their base level rRMBP w/upgraded RAM? Definitely would've bumped the processor at those prices, too. :(

yup. exact same thing w/ 16gb ram. and i still havent even gotten it.

Interesting that initially I wanted custom upgrades so I could have the base processor with 512 GB SSD but after seeing the pricing, it's a better deal to upgrade the processor and leave a base SSD.

Cancel your order?

Now why can't other non-top-end configs have complete configurability? I wouldn't mind the i7 2.0 GB option on the 128 GB 13" Air.

Good point. I hope they implement this in all computers that can't be user-upgraded.

Only in the educational store though right?

EPP store as well.

They make it so regular customers who upgrade a low-end rMBP to high-end specs pay the same, but then they give discounts on upgrades in the edu store-- $50 for SSD and $10 for processor. Hence the price difference. Only other way to still give discounts on upgrades and make it the same for high-end and low-end would be to further drop the high-end by $60.

Awesome, my 2.3Ghz 16GB base model goes back (I am within the two weeks period). Just ordered the 2.6Ghz 16GB for 100 Euro less than my previous.
How you ask?

I discovered an employee discount which applies to me.
I'd call that a win-win.

So, let me get this straight:

768 upgrade costs $1000 if you get the 2.3 GHZ rMBP

but

768 upgrade costs $500 if you get the 2.6 GHz rMBP

----- o_O

What the hell apple! Way to give people choices.

You're upgrading from 256GB to 768GB for $1000
or from 512GB to 768GB for $500.

But at the end of the day, the price difference between a 2.3 and a 2.6 ends up being $100. :)

So, you can either give apple $3399 for an almost top-of-line rMBP or $3499 for the top-of-the line.

Pretty hilarious.

Yeah it's a bit of an eye-opener! I was annoyed at Apple for not allowing an option with the lower CPU and 512GB drive... But now I see that most of the price difference is in the flash memory, I don't feel bad about going for the 2.6/16/512 option. £100 more for the slightly more power CPU seems worth it since we're spending so much anyway! :D

As a rule, Apple should be providing full customisation of all computers with non-service-upgradeable options.

agreed!!!!!!! I don't think I wanna pay $500 for an extra 256 GB SSD anymore... LOL

Sold

Just ordered up the 2.6/16/256... Hopefully it takes less than a week to get here! Upgrading from a 2009 Mac Pro 2.66, which I've just sold.

Someone else made that point and I agree whole-heartedly. I'm sure there's a lot of Macbook Air customers looking for more customization!

Time Capsule on it's own is pretty overpriced IMO but it's still cheaper to get 3 TB compared to 256 GBs onboard storage...crazy.

Leave it to apple to charge an extra $500 for 256gb more ssd.

$500 for 512 GB is a lot but Crucial sells their SSD for around $470-540

Granted Apple could reduce their iTax on the memory...

Ordered the base model rMBP with a ram upgrade on 7/25. After the arrival of the new bto options I decided to upgrade to 2.6GHz / 16GB / 256GB.
It was kind of a pain to upgrade over the phone with Apple, but got it done and got a free 15" Thule bag for the trouble!
