$1000 for a 768GB SSD upgrade ???

Unbelievable price!

In the UK, SSDs seem to be hovering around the 50p/Gig mark currently.

So if you buy from Apple, you're paying $1.30 per gig and losing the stock drive in the process.

EDIT: Just looked at the UK site and it's £800 for the 768GB upgrade. So only double what I'd expect to pay at £1.04 per gig. Bargain!!

There is a bell curve on SSD prices, everywhere. 600GB SSD drives cost about $900. Or $1.50/GB. However, this is not an SSD drive, technically.

All PC manufacturers do this, you lose the stock component when you upgrade - I hate it but that's the way it is.

I'm looking at buying a MBPr sometime in the next month, probably not going to spring for the 768GB since I have so much storage all over my network at home and can't justify it.

A much better deal for those who are happy to wait though.

Early adopters should know that there will be more configuration options added in the near future. I am personally waiting for the 13" version and I won't be stupid enough to be an early adopter either, I'll wait. There's no rush.

Ya...early adoption is equatable to 'stupidity'. By that reckoning, you better wait until the second iteration of the 13" retina model just to make sure you get EXACTLY what you want. Or better yet, don't buy any product after it's released, as it would be 'unwise' to do so. We all know that this kind of action is the name of the game with Apple - it's just a pain that it occurred within such a short time of their initial announcement. Thanks for the kind words, though!

$200 for Ram in 2012? jeeze i paid 60€ a year ago

Price is just about right for DDR3L memory, surprisingly.

----------

Apple has overcharged for their SSDs by hundreds of dollars since the very first macbook air. Now that they've made it so that it is impossible for the user to buy the base HD and upgrade on their own, they can charge whatever they want for it!

So has everyone else, for every component.

It's really costing alot to stay in the Apple Ecosyst, as much as I love Mac's, there are cheaper alternatives in the Windows world, with just as powerful Hardware its getting harder and harder to justify staying mac

Your comment about not defending the pricing is contradictory.

Either you believe that a 'custom storage board that ONLY fits the RMBP' is worth significantly more than a stock form factor solid state drive or you believe that flash storage is flash storage, irrespective of its form factor.

I believe the latter, and that Apple are somewhat insulting with the prices of upgrades.

Same pricing...are they insulting too?

Those are not prices I'd be prepared to pay for storage either, no.

If those prices include your US sales tax, then they equate to about £550 for 600GB. (as opposed to £800 for 768GB)

We are comparing different things in different currencies now though.
It is online. Sales tax would only apply if NewEgg has a warehouse./store in your state.

anyone know the right apple.com email address to send a complain that I bought the 2.3/16/256 because i was locked in the 2.3 cpu while I would have gotten the 2.6/16/256?

if anyone knows a apple.com email address that responds to feedback from buyers please share :)

edit -- they seriously messed with the resale value of the 2.3/16/256. That alone is a legitimate reason to be annoyed.

Looks like these options have all been pulled, probably some system glitch on apples end. Likely will be a hell storm after Apple ends up canceling all these orders.

Are you looking at prices of 100-256GB drives and assuming >500GB would be the same per GB? They aren't, and never have been. You need to compare same size prices. This is always true of flash-based memory of any sort. RAM, SSD, SD cards, etc.

When I looked 1/2 hour ago (after all 3 updates to thread), US store had no new options, now they are all there. Random craziness?

The option to configure the base model still shows up on my iPhone, but not on my iPad.

Also, the details section at the bottom of the page still says it's configurable. Weird.

Cancelled the order I placed on7/30 for a 2.3ghz 16gb 256 and ordered a 2.6ghz 16 gb 256. Will be an extra week of waiting but well worth it.

In Europe the options have been there constantly all day (for me) since I first reported them in the MBP section.

US prices are always excluding sales tax. So if you ever try to compare US and UK prices, you have to add 20% immediately for VAT.

Sorry, didn't mean to be blunt. But early adopters surely can't be surprised when new upgrades and even price cuts occur? I was surprised at how limited the options on the base model were, but perhaps Apple were just keen to get as many out the door as fast as possible without complicating things with CTO models slowing production/deliveries down?

I can see the new configurations

fwiw I can configure a lowend rMBP to come to $4,206
Max out the processor, ram, HD, add a superdrive (pretending it is a blueray) and applecare.

Where's the children to sell when you need them.

But, the highend rMBP with about the same upgrades (2.7GHz, 16GB, 768 HD, superdrive, applecare) comes to $4,177

You can return your item. I made my order 2 weeks ago. And Apple allows me to return the MBPr before 13 August.

Now I am in dilemma should I return and made the upgrade or just use 2.3/16/256. Haiz.. APPPLE!!

The short answer,...yes. I am certain that when they made these changes they figured a percentage of the people that could would return their recent purchases to take advantage of this. Heck it was their hand that put it into motion. It cuts both ways. They are pissing people off with this latest change so take full advantage. They should feel a bit of the sting too. Fair is fair. They will just sell yours as a refurbished model anyway. It's an expensive computer. you might as well be happy with it.

Good move by Apple. It's working fine in the UK store. I was able to configure MBP Retina base model with a 2.6 GHz processor and 16GB of RAM. It makes a big difference to the price by not having to pay for the extra flash memory. £400 to go from 256 to 512 - astonishing! Does it really still cost that much to buy? I though flash memory prices had started to come down. Doesn't look like it. For £400 I'll just get the 256 version and buy an old style external hard drive with 1TB for a 100 quid.

I wish these configuration options were able to buy in-store rather than just online. I hate buying online as I've had so many problems in the past.
