The MacBook Air's use Ball Grid Array SoC's - which are surface mount soldered into the logic board directly. They are not socketed in place.

Thank you and +1'd for that! Learn something new and useful every day. Now my post looks stupid because I mentioned a socket twice :D

I suspect this to be such a small update its hardly anything to talk or write about. Perhaps a slightly better CPU and thats about it. If so, I hardly call it an update worth even mentioning.
I don´t understand why apple don´t update the mini, which is way overdue, or even the iMac, even if its quite new all ready, at least people need as much power they can get in those machines. in the air, its mostly used for simple tasks all ready and the next wont be for much more either...so why not just keep selling the same until the retina comes and release it all in one package big update...-thats what I would do if I were apple.

First, PERHAPS a slightly better CPU? Do you think the Airs won't get that in a refresh?

Second, the Mac mini, quite honestly, is plenty powerful as it is. I'm really not sure what people are waiting for unless they NEED Thunderbolt 2 (99.99% of people don't), NEED 802.11ac (99.99% of people don't). Haswell is around ~10% faster than Ivy Bridge with the biggest changes being power consumption for laptops. Is the Mac mini not power-sipping enough? Interestingly enough, the one REAL difference between Ivy Bridge and Haswell is the Haswell GPU's ability to handle 23.976hz, for proper 24p playback. However, since OS X doesn't currently support 23.976hz, this is all moot!

So, again, I'm not sure what people are waiting for with the Mac mini. More than any other OS X-based product right now, the Mac mini is the one device that doesn't really matter as to when it's upgraded. Looks like Apple agrees right now. And I own a 2012 mini!

Buttonless trackpad sounds utterly horrible.

Not necessarily. Synaptics just released a new version that has landed in an HP notebook that has gotten good reviews. It has haptic feedback.

That said, I think tomorrow's MacBook Air update is just a processor bump, sort of like what Apple did with the Retina MacBook Pro last January. Intel released some minor updates to their processor line, and Apple is just using the newer chips.

To those expecting the MacBook Air 12" refresh this year - you will have to wait until 2015. It will be Broadwell-based and that will not ship any any serious volume until Q1 2015.

Well, you've given two good reasons right there yourself :p I am sure the spec bumps are extremely minor, relatively speaking. Not worth spending a slide on at the keynote of WWDC.

They might need that time for other hardware like you say...when was the last time we had so many iPhone rumours this far ahead of WWDC for example? A brand new revolutionary MBA AND an all newly designed iPhone would be a blockbuster keynote, and unprecedented where Apple is concerned. Major problem with that is what do they announce in the Fall then this year? iWatch???

Maybe...
No way will we get a new iPhone shipping with iOS 7. If we were going to get a new iPhone at WWDC iOS 8 would've been announced already.

I am not in the market for Mac mini,
But I imagine people are waiting for haswell, for the large increase in GPU performance. Whether the Mac mini gets intel HD 5000 or one of the models with Iris. It is a very significant leap and worth the wait, if you are a graphic artist or a Gamer

Why not offer a spec update to the Mini too???

Only conclusions is a redesign coming at WWDC or the fall OR Apple ignores the Mini entirely this year.

Going from using Airs for a few years then moving to a rMBP 13" > Retina is a huge deal when you have it you'll wonder why you settled for less :p

Maybe there are people that are happy with what they have & do not need Retina

Agreed. The trackpad on my Air is so clicky, that I actually dislike clicking with it.

How about the setting tap to click I believe is what they call it in the track-pad settings

Who knows what will come tomorrow, besides a CPU bump, IMHO the current CPU's are fine, but that's just my 2 cent's .

Mac Mini will be no more, there going to call it the MacPro Jr, and it will take at least 12 weeks to order and then be delayed inevitably because of Global Warming...............................:D

So a CPU bump and Thunderbolt 2, and that's it I guess. Maybe 256gb on the base.

Looks like Macmini redesign for WWDC

Yes, a better GPU is really what I'm waiting for. The HD4000 was a step backward from the last mini (2011?) that had a discrete graphics option (AMD Radeon HD 6630M, I think?). The imini won't be a gaming powerhouse, but HD5000/ Iris Pro would make it a great light gaming machine.

I agree 100%
And have been trying to say this.

I had slight hope that Intel would be giving apple a a special supply of broadwell chips to release tha air this holiday(December). But that was more just a dream.

The broadwell chips realistically will be ready q1 or even q2 of 2015.

Hey, a MAC rumor!!!

Was coming to post that very thing; I don't care what it's for, I'm just happy to see some Mac rumor amongst all the iOS/iDevice stuff. (I understand why there's more of the other stuff; economics and all that. I just want to see some new Mac kit out there.)

It's a decoy. All those Macbook Air boxes are filled with 6 small boxes of the new Mac Mini

What is a buttonless trackpad? It doesn't have any tactile movement at all? That would be highly annoying. I've tried the trackpad clicking, but I keep reverting to the physical button because it just feels better to get that feedback. However, I do wish it had less travel. Sometimes it feels like I need to press harder than what feels natural.
Maybe we should wait and see how Apple implements this. Right now, everyone's just thinking that Apple will simply replace button clicking with tap clicking. I tend to believe that they will come up with something more clever and practical. It would have to be a better way to do it (after getting used to the change of course).

Why would they refresh them now, and release new versions at WWDC?

And why would I buy a new MBA if I know there are more coming in June?

Uhm.. maybe because.. they won't release new versions at WWDC, and there won't be any other MBA updates in June.

because at WWDC they will announce 12" macbook air and probably mac mini

They won't.

Better than no bump at all?

Well, are u sure? There is no real world difference between bumped and non bumped air - obe would hope for ips panel, or higher entry specs, or better gpu (5100 or 5200)... But only 0,1 mhz bump, really?;(
