Apple Expected to Remove Chargers From Entire iPhone Lineup [Updated]

For months, it has been rumored that iPhone 12 models will not come with a charger in the box, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman now claims that this move will extend to Apple's entire iPhone lineup following its event today, including the iPhone SE.

Last month, the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE launched without chargers in the box, so it would be natural for iPhones to follow suit. This briefly excluded higher-end Edition and Hermès versions of the Apple Watch Series 6, but those models now ship without chargers too. iPads continue to be bundled with a power adapter in the box.

Apple is set to host an event later today, where it is widely expected to unveil four new iPhone models, including the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. All four devices are expected to feature 5G support, OLED displays, and a new flat-edged design like the iPad Pro.

This morning, reputable leaker Evan Blass shared what appear to be official images of the entire iPhone 12 lineup, along with images of the so-called HomePod mini, which is also expected to be introduced at Apple's event today.

Update 9:01 a.m.: In a follow-up Tweet, Gurman says EarPods will also be removed from all iPhone models in Apple's lineup and that the USB-A to Lightning cable will become a USB-C to Lightning cable. As a result, boxes for current phones like the iPhone SE that will continue to be sold alongside the iPhone 12 lineup will "shrink considerably."

Normally I wouldn't care, but it's actually quite ridiculous given that most people don't yet have USB-C charging cables/bricks to make use of the faster charging made for these newer batteries.

As long as they don't get rid of a physical connector to the phone, so I can still use CarPlay and charge my phone via a cable, I guess I can live with this decision from Apple.

I think if its for the environment an easy PR fix would be if you stop at an Apple store with a new device ~3 Months you can get a charger for free.

Makes everyone happy people like me who never use the charger are good and people who need it can have one.

Good. I have way too many unused chargers at home. Four phones on upgrade program means every year four more chargers ending up unused in my drawer. We anyway use wireless chargers almost everywhere.

The port still has relevancy in many situations where Apple wouldn’t remove that quite yet, but I believe that will be A reality sooner than later. And that’s when you’ll start seeing more auto manufacturers migrate to wireless carplay for obvious reasons.

I don’t care about the damn environment. Who cares. Just dump all that ewaste in a different country or in the ocean. Or in space. No one cares about the environment. But what we do care about is free adapters. I have 9 5-watt adapters and 9 EarPods. I like having them just in case.

I think it makes sense, if they stop including the adapter with 12 and 12 Pro why would they keep bundling it with the SE?

Wording on this is vague, and implies the entire charger is missing. It's the wall charger being removed, not both that and the charging cable (USB A/ C to Lightning).
